Standard Grout Joint

Is there such a thing as a "typical" or standard grout joint for a basic 12 x 12 tile? (Not rectified or natural stone).

We have a friendly disagreement on whether it's 1/4 or 3/16 or if that even is enough of a difference to discuss.... :)

(thought I typed this earlier, but I don't see it, so maybe I didn't hit send... if it's a duplicate, my apologies)

I prefer the smaller, 3/16ths is fine for my tastes for typical tile. Large enough to accommodate the out-of-square variations in typical tile.

I think it is worth a discussion, only because with variations in size your grout joints will be a tad smaller or larger than the planned size. 1/4" is big, and going even wider is biggerer. Biggerererer.

If your tile is very uniform in size, then 1/4" all over might look fine if you prefer more grout, or going a tad wider from 3/16ths" to 1/4" might even help hit layout lines depending on the size and scale of the room.

But that's my opinion, not "set in ceramic" fact.

There is no "standard" width. You can use whatever you want. A real easy thing to do is buy a bag of spacers in each size and lay out a dozen tiles in each spacing option.

However 3/16 to 1/4 is a big difference. It is a 33% increase to move up to a 1/4 spacing.

Also, because of the extreme sizing that usually comes with slate, I would strongly recommend that you don't use spacers. Instead, lay a few of the tiles out dry with the 3/16" grout joints, and then find out what your coursing is (a course is the dimension of one tile plus one grout joint). Figure out where you want to start your layout from, snap two square lines from that point (if you need help with this, let me know, and I'll explain it), and then grid the room out in 2 tile by 2 tile boxes. That way, no matter HOW much the size varies, the tiles will remain straight.

The standard advice in the tile world is to measure a bunch of your tiles, and calculate the difference between the largest and smallest tiles. Multiply that difference by 3, and that is the mnimum width for grout. So if your tiles range from 5-7/8" to 6", the difference is 1/8", so make your grout be 3/8". This always seems quite conservative to me, that that is what the pros do.

Is quarter round the standard for LVP stair joints?

Thank you for the feedback! They have agreed to come back out and cut the LVP pieces for the risers "differently" (aka "correctly"?) to avoid the need for quarter round. I believe the responses here helped show them that I wasn't going to be convinced that "quarter round is the only way to do LVP stairs". They ended up deciding that a gap is not necessary for stairs like ours. Not exactly sure what that means, but I'm glad they decided that. To answer a few of the questions that were asked.. all except for one of the treads were 10" before the quarter round, so now only about 9" with the quarter round. The one that is different, right before the landing, was only 9.5" before, so 8.5" with the quarter round. Way too small! The treads are all LVP though, no wood. We were pretty happy with the look and the nosing that they had for it, and now that they're going to get rid of the quarter round, it should be great!

Did you have the grout size in writing? Did you pay them? Did you use a licensed contractor? I wouldn't find that acceptable in any way. The grout color is terrible, and they obviously made an error in the type of grout. I'd make them redo it all. If they refuse, take them to small claims court with photos.

A lot depends on the 'look' you are trying to achieve.

Smaller joints of a matching color are less conspicuous than larger joints in a contrasting color.
