Free VIdeo Converter Tool

Again tonight while trying to watch streaming video over a 6 mb DSL access I get hit with an "opportunity" to download a "Free video converter tool"... I was watching something on Youtube.

I wonder: Is it useful? I consider my streaming video to be sub-par at times, due to the relatively slow DSL, is this something a "video converter tool" might fix?

I am always concerned about the risk of downloading anything and that's why I haven't downloaded the subject tool before. Anyone in the world can put up video on Youtube, I am guessing, so your worse nightmare malware could just be waiting for the gullible.

Safety aside, does one gain anything from the current crop of video converter tools?

Are you into making video's? a converter allows you to convert your video's/ audio to other formats. You stream a utube video on a player and you must have Java updated of course. If it is slow or buffering, then it's your slow DSL. Be careful of pop ups offering crap, often maleware or worse.

A 6 mb line should be more than adequate for streaming video. Netflix says you need 5 mb for their HD signal, and 5 is close to the effective capability of a 6 mb line. So long as there aren't other users sharing the bandwidth of your connection, your problem shouldn't be the line.

Have you tried running a speed test (speakeasy.net is a well regarded one) to see if you're getting the speed you expect? Is this a wifi connection, maybe with a lot of other dwelling units close by (ie, an like an apartment or condo) producing interference on your channel?

You Tube is owned by Google. Downloads could be annoying but certainly not dangerous. On the other hand, I'm not sure what use you would have for what you're describing.

"Doing those will require that I learn more." Truthfully, I had never tried downloading captions from Youtube until you mentioned it so... I learned a little too, which is a good thing, I think. Also, I probably didn't follow your method precisely in that I did not use Freemake Video Downloader to get the video from Youtube. I used one of the several Youtube video downloader add-ons to get the video sitting on my desktop in front of me to work with. I then used the Greasemonkey script to download the ".srt"(subtitles) file to my desktop beside the video. Then I used Freemake Video Convertor to open the video, add the subtitles file, and finally to convert to DVD. Using that method I have subtitles hard-coded into the resulting DVD files. Using that method worked for me. Honestly, I've never used the Freemake downloader but I assume it should work the same. BTW, if you installed the Grease Monkey add-on and then(after installing GM) installed(by clicking the green "Install" button in the upper right corner) the captions download script, the little Grease Monkey icon should go from grayed out to active(?) when you go to the video page you linked above. If it does, you should automatically have the subtitle download buttons since that's what the script is for. Good luck. Edit: Just for fun, here are the captions in "timed-text" format, not that they would do you any good without converting them to "srt" but still, it's interesting. http://video.google.com/timedtext?lang=en&v=c2aF6-RXs0Y. Notice the "v=video_id" part on the end. I assume you could use that as a template to get timed-text for any Youtube video having captions. Just guessing though. I got that from the source of the Greasemonkey script.

I use the free online zamzar to do file conversions. www.zamzar.com this is another good online free option that does tons of various types of conversions Media-Convert.Com for programs to install that do this I always check out gizmo's site for his best of list, he usually has excellent choices and safe ones. Best Free Audio / Video Format Conversion Program I don't know anything about the one you mentioned.
