Video File converter

I tried using DIVX to convert my downloaded movies to a file that's playable in a dvd player on a dvd disk.

There was all kinds of problems.

Can some one recommend one (free?) that works well and is easy to use? Also an explanation, like the kind you'd give to a child, a daft child, would really help.

I've checked both of the suggestions and now realize that I omitted an important detail: When I used Zamzar, I would upload a video by pasting its URL, then Zamzar would email me a URL for the download page where I would go to obtain the converted file.
