My secret garden...aka the pool room.
Comments (13)Thanks for the nice comments it was one of those projects that just happened, really didn't have a plan just an idea. Kathy, sounds like a plan and come winter I'll be sitting on your doorstep :). Christine, nice and restful, I wish, there's a 4 lane highway right behind the fence. Renee, I've always been partial to ferns, a lot of the ferns have self seeded, we have to keep removing them. I'm wondering if Button ferns would survive the winter, if I can find one I just might give it a try. Mytime, eventually the lattice will be covered with vines, in fact I have a Passion vine sitting in a pot ready to be planted. I already have a Silk Vine, odd little flowers that don't really smell that great but I like the leaves:). Lots of ideas going through my head of what to do with the birdcage it might even end up with a tree branch, spanish moss and Tillandsias, time will tell. LOL Cyn, now if the rest of the garden looked half decent I'd be a happy camper. Yes we dug the pool ourselves or I should say DH did. We built the U-shaped planter first, then the roof, then the pool (rubber liner with carpet underlay under it for added protection), it's about 10'x4'x4' deep. Then we built the deck it gives the illusion it's over part of the pool but it isn't, note to self the planks should have been screwed down not nailed, changing a board if need would be so much easier. If we were ever to do it again the pool would be straight sided no ledges for potted plants, that itself would help keep critters out. The other thing we're contemplating is putting doors on another thing to help keep whatever out that gets our fish, we've been pretty lucky but last year we lost a few. Cyn, if you get a decent filter and a UV light you shouldn't have any problems. All we do with ours is a partial water change a couple of times during the summer and scoop anything out that has fallen in, that's it. When we do the change we pump the water through a piece of hose and I water the garden with it. Annette...See MoreBonus room: door or no door?
Comments (10)I don't have a bonus room in the attic but I think the hidden doorway / bookcase shelf thing would be really cool at the bottom! We have a secret passageway in our basement under the stairs. Under the stairs is a "hobbit room" that has an arched entryway. You have to go into the hobbit room to enter the passageway and then the passageway goes under the stairs and into an adjoining room. This adjoining room was supposed to house all of the mechanical equipment but upon pouring foundation, we had to split the mechanical stuff with another room so it left this room with a bit more space. It will be my craft room and it has no windows. We'll do a bookshelf/door thing with the only door so it will be a totally secret "hidden" room. Pretty fun!...See MoreSecret Door/Passage Ideas?
Comments (25)My upcoming build will have a few "secret" things. One will be into a safe room in the basement(really a tornado shelter but people think safe room sounds cooler LOL). I will also have a hidden door to slide groceries into pantry from the foyer. I may make that a full sized door disguised as a bookshelf, not decided yet. We will also put a gun safe somewhere in a false walled room. (as well as store paperwork important documents there). The builder that is doing our house has also put lofts in kids bedrooms, not exactly secret but a cool spot for kids to have a little fort area. If I had a layout where this would work, I'd love a secret door into a powder room. Or a wet bar like in a James Bond type movie....See MoreAdding a totally not secret staircase to the attic?
Comments (52)Thanks again KW. I was able to Photoshop enhancify the pixels of the inset bookcase photo to create a rendering of what it could have looked like as a secret door, open in all its glory- had the project worked out. And here's a couple poorly hand drawn mockups of the mechanisms that would have been required: There would need to be a top piece to hide the upper workings, but unfortunately it would hit the wall before the case, keeping the proposed 180 from happening. So it would need to rotate up and out of the way somehow. But also, you'd want it to happen automatically because what's the point of a trigger mechanism that requires two hands-on processes to work? So maybe there could have been a rope with a spring and a couple pulleys, a stop, and then a counterweight for the return drop. It'd all be just too complicated. I mean this monstrosity would probably be super heavy, so maybe at rest, there could be a caster that sits on a step whilst the unit was closed. The hinge at the top would need to be reinforced strong somehow, like maybe using a piece of thick steel from I dunno, my vehicle's old helper leaf spring embedded in the wall studs for example. Hey, maybe the bottom step riser could even open to hide AC filters or something too since we're just filling one of our hands with wishes....See Morejimonthebeach
