HAVE: Yippee Skippy, my box is here

WOW is all I can say. We got a call yesterday morning that my 2 yr old was scheduled for surgery this morning. Nothing major, she was tongue tied and they needed to snip the membrane. But they did have to put her under and I was nervous. All went well and we were on our way home 45 minutes after they took her back.

When we got home, I saw that they postman had left me a box. So Rhiannon helped me open the box.

Susan_in_NC was my swap partner and sent great gifts

Set of 6 ramekins for MLC

deviled egg plate

hush puppy mix

bbq sauce (DH laid claim to that)

set of spring place mats DD thinks they are hers

mini colanders again DD thinks they will be great for her kitchen

set of flower spreaders

Everything is perfect and arrived in time to boost my spirits. My mom is here and she is amazed at what I got and doesn't get the idea of swap.

Stacie

ps big thanks to Susan

Plants In My Skippy Filter

"But with plants in the dirt, do I simply rinse the dirt from their roots & place them in the grate in the top of the filter with their roots in the water?" Karen, for your purposes it is best to plant aquatic plants in mesh containers with gravel to weigh and anchor them down. No need to plant in dirt as that will just cloud the water with the brisk flow through the bio-filter. Place the mesh containers with the plant and gravel atop the filter media and grate. If it's like my Atlantic filterfalls, the top of the mesh pots (containers are about 4" to 5" tall) are just about even with the water line. The gravel and mesh also allows the roots to continue to extend into the filter area. You can either cut them back every so often or just let them grow and grow... however, they can tangle-up filter media pretty good.

I also got my Skippy built and up this year. It has really helped with the water quality, but I am now dealing with green water, high PH levels, and high ammonia levels. Hope the information on this forum will help with that. Don't know what I would do without everyone's help here.

samismom, a skippy filter is a DIY pond filter. It is best on small ponds (under 1000 gallons). A submersible pumps sends water down into the bottom of the filter, the water flows up through bio-media and flows out the top either via a waterfall or a pipe. It's very easy to make! Here's a link to skippy web site. This web site will show you how to build one. But do NOT believe the stupid statement they make about never having to clean it because fish poop turns into sand. That is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard. Sand is made of silica. The sludge in the bottom of the skippy filter is not sand....it is rotting fish poop and decaying materials. NOT a good thing to keep in your system. So build the filter with a drain as close to the bottom as possible and clean the sludge out a few times a year. Frequent cleaning is a healthy thing. Just don't rinse the bio-media too agressivly or let it dry out while you are cleaning the filter because that will damage the beneficial bacteria that is living on it. Just remember...the good bacteria lives on the bio-media. the bad bacteria is living in the sludge in the bottom of the filter. Here is a link that might be useful: skippy web site

Congradulations retiredprof I am glad you have some sprouts finally. See you just have to have faith and praying to the gods helps some too, teeheehee I have 1 Dianthus 'Rainbow Loveliness' out of gosh knows how many. I check them every few days just to see if anything is sprouting. It makes me feel so good to see those little green babies shining in all the brown stuff. I by far think the best part about sowing like this is not having to care for them from the start. I have lost many a babies because of forgetting to water them when needed from starting them indoors OR because I started them too early. I do need to jump on getting some tomatoes started. I would like to have some early tomatoes, last year all the early ones something happened too, once they got turned over and we lost them another time we forgot to cover them up after setting them outside and they got frosted! I am not putting them out this year until the 2nd week or 3rd week of April! Too much trouble babing the darn things and losing them after all that! I so need to plant more stuff, I have 100's of seeds waiting to be plant. I don't think I am gonna get them all done! :) Fran

Nice surprises! Since I live down the highway from Susan, I'm curious as to which bbq sauce she sent. Might be one I've not tried before.

Does this mean you're a MLC virgin too? :)

Enjoy your gifts, Susan did a great job of shopping for you.

That sounds like a wonderful box of goodies, and I love your daughter's name.

Everyone needs a devilled egg plate and the ramekins are great for a lot of things, including the MLCs. (grin)

What a great job Susan did of shopping for you.

Thanks all for comments. This is my fist swap and boy what a swap. I'll be doing this again. I just hope my partner likes what I sent.It should be there by tomorrow. I did all things that are made in Nebraska. The bbq sace is George's original bbq sauce. DD1 is up and running and now for the first time can stick her tongue out, just wondering if I'll regret that:) Just wish we had done it sooner. Now will have to wait and see if my partner likes her swap package.

Stacie, I'm glad to hear your daughter is doing so well. When Amanda was less than a year old they had to surgically open her tear ducts. It was a quick and simple procedure and I was a total and complete wreck. It didn't seem to bother her at all.

Somehow I get the feeling that it was a lot worse for you than it was for her.

I forgot to mention in the note that the BBQ sauce is one that a friend of ours uses when he does a "Pig Pick'n". I use it in the slow cooker, reserving about a cup of the sauce to pour over the pork after it is minced. (The NC way, as I've been told -- at least around Raleigh!) Then serve on a bun, topped with slaw with hushpuppies on the side.

I'm glad the package got there and in good shape (without BBQ on everything!) Thank heaven for bubble wrap.

Rhiannon is doing great and it is amazing how much she can move her tongue. We didn't realize til recently that she is really tongue tied and it has been affecting her language skills. But it all went well despite her trying to punch out the nurse taking vitals before we left. I feel bad that we didn't realize this before.

The flower spreaders are those little knives that you spread soft cheese with. We just got the call to reschedule the surgery yesterday,so didn;t have long to get worked up and worried about it.

I am glad your daughter is doing well. Also glad you did not have time to prepeare/freak out. I have a friend whose son needed surgery on his testicles at 5 moths or so. he was bouncing in his exersaucer within a day, mom said she however would never recover.

Great package. If deviled egg plates are so important in the south i should move, I love deviled eggs.
