Are you all doing a keyed knob and a deadbolt on exterior doors?

this is what our door guy is suggesting. the keyed knobs are so unsightly :(

how about an entryset? this is for things like mud room/secondary doors not provided by the window supplier right? (since those would presumably come with multipoint hardware mounted)

Yes, this is for mud room and the door to the garage. An entry set doesn't have a deadbolt though.

Our last house had locking hardware with a keypad on the garage side for ease of getting in and out. We always kept it locked as an extra precaution, not just for extra security in addition to the garage door, but also to provide barrier in the case we forgot to close the garage door for the night when coming home late (happened more than I'd like to admit). The keypad allowed the door to always be locked, but we didn't have to worry about locking ourselves out if we didn't bring the key and it was slightly easier to unlock while holding onto our things. I guess I would also judge your exposure to break-ins in your area. Where we live we have a greater likeliness of a burglary than the typical suburb so we have put as many impediments to getting into our house as possible. In some areas that may be overkill. But even then there is a definite advantage to being slightly more secure (and visibly so) than your neighbors.

Hi, If the key turns but the latch dosn't move I think the mechanical connection came loose. There is a piece of metal that goes from the key side of the lock through the latch and into the thumb handle on the inside side of the door. There is only one mechanical connection and that is on the key side, the rest of the metal slide into the rest of the parts. Gently take the lock off the door and look for the clip that came loose and put it back on. Good Luck Woodbtcher

My friends are out of town for months or even years at a time and I'm enlisted to go check on their place. One winter someone broke in. I had never seen a burglarized house before. I was shocked by how completely they ransacked, tore into, emptied, shook-out, turned inside out, spilled out, split open, yanked apart every thing they could. You could not move in the house without trampling on top of the household contents that were all over the floor, beds, chairs, tables, etc. It was a disaster. My neighbors really did not have anything of money value and most of their formerly valuable possessions are now old and undesirable. Nobody steals a tube TV anymore. Nobody steals a 20 year old computer. Nobody even steals a radio. Radio, what ancient thing is that? So when it comes to hiding your keys, I'd say their is really no completely hiding them from a determined thief. I wonder if some decoy keys set out in a somewhat obvious place, plus some sacrifice-able valuables left in equally obvious places could spare your better stuff, your well hidden better stuff. What do you think?

Generally, hardware is viewed by room. In a kitchen, it is possible to mix finishes for a more custom look. Really just depends on your taste. If you are matching hardware by floor, you really have nothing to worry about, unless it is all the same size shape and too repetitive and not conducive to the item it is placed on. Down a hallway, it is nice to have unified hardware as they are often all in one's line of sight. Rooms behind closed doors, go for what you like inside, does not have to match what is on the entire floor. My advice for your kitchen if it is not too late, it to find hardware that come in that satin brass finish you like but are handles and not just knobs. I assume you cannot return the ones I see in the picture. My suggestion then would be keep knobs on the bottom drawers, of which you have many and get vertical handles for the uppers in satin brass, just to break add interest and break up the repetition a bit. Ideally, I would do the reverse horizontal or cup handles on lowers and knobs on uppers. But go with what you love.

An "entry lockset" is latching with a deadbolt above it.

Sounds like you're getting close, threeapples!! We thought about this very question long & hard and finally decided to go with standard entry knob (lever in our case) with a single deadbolt. The thing that tipped the scales for us was thinking back to all the times we inadvertently locked ourselves out of the house using the knob with the lock built in. DH's solution to this when it occurred was to push the lever to it's breaking point and voila the door would open. If it's really that easy to break the darn thing to gain entry, then it's really not worth the hassle. Plus we couldn't get anymore of our lever sets in the new house as they were discontinued shortly after we purchased--no extras to set aside for when we would have eventually had to break a few.

From experience, if you do a keyed knob and deadbolt make sure you have a key hidden somewhere or a key pad on your garage. We keep our knob unlocked and only use the deadbolt. Guests, especially little ones, tend to play with it though. I am in the habit of checking the knob before closing the door to see if it's locked or not even with a key and key pad now. My opinion is to skip the keyed knob.

I decided to not do the keyed knob and choose an entry set. Now I have to decide which brand. We have Rocky Mountain hardware on the front door in the arch pattern (was required in multipoint), crown city brass egg and dart on interior doors, and Marvin brass levers on the patio doors. I hate the fact that there are so many hardware profiles in this house! Oh, and basement sliding doors are Marvin white--yuck! Should I do Rocky Mountain on mud hall and garage doors then or get Baldwin or Emtek? This is just too many decisions.
