Broke off Key in Door Lock

He gave away his time and knowledge, in the losing effort of hoping you will make all of the hardware purchases that you need at his store, and of course at his prices which are usually higher for the most part than you will find the same items for at a place like Lowes, or another big box hardware store. While you can say you will now buy everything from him, all you need to do is look at just how many people are going to the other stores to see just how much his service really means to the public at large. By him not charging for what he did, you got to have HIS cake, and you got to eat it too. Someday all too soon you will see his business close and you will be left to wonder why that happened, cause he was such a good guy. Running an honest business does not equal "free to me", in fact now when he finds himself in a situation where he has to charge for his time and the expectation has been set that he usually did something for free, he will now come across as looking as anything but honest in his business. This should all sound real familiar, because its one of the biggest problems we face in this trade. While guys try and do something free once in a while to help build their businesses, they teach their customers that their time is worth less than it really is. They create an atmosphere where the commodity ( something like a tire ) is the important part of the transaction, not the training and the skill that is required to replace it safely and correctly. Meanwhile, by giving up an important revenue source they turn around one day and find that they cannot afford the tools and the schools their people require to stay up to date with the technology that is hitting the streets today....See MoreAre all interior door mortise locks created equally?
Comments (19)"how can I figure this out before ordering?" you purchase one and see if it operates smoothly, then stop worrying about it. It is just a lock There area number of methods for installing mortise locks, none of them 'low cost' since they all take a certain amount of skilled labor and somewhat expensive tooling to not damage the door. you can fit them with hand tools at a large price in labor This is one of the reasons the newer locks are just bored round holes. A couple hole saws, a small router, and some jigs and you can fit out the doors in about 15-20 minutes each. Even bolt and strike plates often come with rounded corners to allow quick routing of the shallow recess in the edge of the door and the jamb 9and there are also small tools available to square the corners if you do not like the rounded ones or the lock needs square corners). I have a hollow chisel mortiser (it 'drills' square holes) that can be used to bore for mortise locks, and have used it for this a number of times over the years. It runs about $1,000 minimum for good one. The small wood-shop ones are not adequate for the task since they do not move the chisel but force you to move the object being bored. OK fora small piece of wood for furniture making, not so good for a door. As long as there s away to unlock the door from inside the room easily without a key (thumb latch) the AHJ should not have a complaint. Privacy locks are standard for bedrooms and bathrooms, as opposed to passage knobs that cannot be secured at all....See Morelock not working on garage door
Comments (1)the assembly on teh inside has come apart. you can either break in yourself and risk replacing more than just the lock assembly, or call a pro and have a slightly better chance at not tearing the door up....See MoreTwo Sears Garage Door openers on the fritz... and I'm locked out!
Comments (1)Sounds like you got zapped by mother nature and there isn't much you can do but call a technician. It is always important to have a second entrance to the garage for situations just like this - not to mention a common power failure. I wish I could give you an easy answer but I can't....See Morejaymielo
