30' gas range died, few $$, cook lots - advice?

Wants:

self-clean oven

convection, if possible

time-bake

easy clean-up

low maintenance/excellent repair history

I know nothing about what brands/lines are trouble, trouble-free, or in between. Give me your best advice, please

Um, I mean 30" range, not 30' -- Man, she really *does* cook lots! :-)

You might take a look at Amana. We were impressed enough with the AGR 5735 we found in the house we rented while building that we bought another for the new house. Amana isn't on the top of the reliability charts per Consumer Reports but we've had zero problems with the two ranges. You didn't say what "few $$" means but the AGR 5735 does your whole list (I think) except convection for about $700, the AGR 5835 adds convection for another hundred bucks.

Wolf owner here, and I disagree with the statement about quality suffering after its merge with SZ. Wolf stands behind its products, and if something were to go wrong, the response is immediate and decisive. On this forum, you will rarely read about repeated problems with a Wolf range or oven. Do a search on this website and you'll get lots of input on the attributes or disadvantages of a Wolf range v other brands. Only you can decide how you'll cook, what you want in a range, etc. Most people are really happy with what they've purchased (regardless of brand) because they spent so much time doing research. Good luck figuring it out.

I haven't cleaned the insides often (had the range swapped out because of the burner issues, so haven't had one long enough to get the inside too dirty). Yes, it is a PITA to do (the downside of no self-clean, but the alternative would be having the range pump out tremendous amounts of heat for many hours). I always had to clean my oven door manually on my old self-clean range anyway, and had to wipe out the ashes left behind after self-clean, so it''s not as though I had a free ride before! For the top, once you get the hang of it, cleaning goes pretty quickly (I don't clean the actual burner rings themselves BTW, don't see a need unless there's been a messy spillover--they're burners after all--not suppposed to look pristine and unused!). For spot cleaning or jsut wiping down the burner pans, I have found that Perfect Kitchen spray (from BB&B) was a good recommendation from the people at the SZ/Wolf showroom. Depending on the am't of mess, I'll spray the burner pans or spray a paper towel and wipe. For baked on crud or more extensive cleaning, spray with Dawn Power Dissolver spray gel, let sit (how long depends on how burnt on the mess or how much time you want to wait), and then "scrub" in the sink with a blue scrub sponge (ours usually has some Palmolive dish soap on it already), rinse, and dry. I use a dish towel to dry the pans. If I notice any smudges or finger prints after popping the pans back onto the range, I might give a quick buff with a dry microfiber cloth. The grates get a quick scrub in the sink with a soapy blue scrub sponge if I'm going to be cleaning the drip pans as well, not if I'm just spraying and wiping them. I do those first, then lay them upside down on a sheet of paper towel on the counter. They're pretty much dry by the time I've replaced the burner pans. I'll just blot up any remaining water/wet spots with a towel/microfiber/or paper towel and we're good to go!

DF usually means gas burners and an electric oven but FiveStar makes what they call a "true" DF, 48 inch with two ovens, one gas and one electric. I would ask yourself what do you like about the DF or an electric oven? What features will be meaningful to you in the way you cook? These features are only good if they are useful and they work. These are some differences in the way electric and gas ovens bake/roast. These features can vary quite a bit brand to brand. -You will commonly read that gas is moist heat and electric heat is dry. This is only if you look at the source of heat without considering what goes on in the oven. Electric ovens hold on to more of the moisture from what you are baking or if you add steam. This actually ends up "moist" heat. This promotes starch gelatinization.This is mostly a benefit for those that want a particular type of crust when baking bread. It also will delay the setting of a cake or things that rise a little giving it a better rise. Gas ovens do not hold on to the moisture very well because they are ventilated much more. Gas actually releases moisture as a product of combustion but it leaves the oven chamber quickly so a gas oven has "dry" heat. Some bread bakers cover their bread to keep the moisture in the first half of the baking process in a gas oven. Some have even tried blocking the ventilation to keep moisture in the oven. This dry heat is good though for the second half of baking because it promotes browning. In some blogs I have read, bakers open the electric oven briefly after a cake has set, to release steam and/or turn on the convection fan. The dry heat of a gas oven is better for roasting as it evaporates moisture and promotes browning. The convection fan will do that in an electric oven. -Some electric ovens have a very narrow range of temperature. The normal swing is about 25 degrees on either side of the set temperature. I have not found it that important to have the very narrow swing in temperature. -Some electric ovens have modes with the ability to direct more heat from the top for roasting and from the bottom for baking. The convection fan speed may also vary, slower for baking, faster for roasting. You might also have two fans. Electric ovens also might have third(and fourth) elements called European or true convection. This is a benefit when the oven is full in having things bake more evenly. You can't always tell when these elements are being used in a given mode. My Electrolux oven has a little indicator that shows the rotation of the elements but most do not. You can hear a difference in fan speeds. Gas ovens typically have an on and off switch for the fan. I like the different modes but some people do not find utility in them and consider them needless "bells and whistles". They do require a computer board to coordinate them which some do not like because some ovens have had boards that fail in self cleaning. Some also do not like the sound of cooling fans that can run after you turn the oven off These features do have the potential to heat an oven more evenly if they work. I would avoid any new models with these modes until they are proven. Some electric ovens have an "auto correct" feature for convection. It is ok if optional, but I don't like for an oven to automatically lower the temperature for me. This is not always necessary. Electric ovens are more likely to have self clean. One model of the Capital Culinarian AG has self clean but is $$$. Many people avoid use of the self clean because it seems to be a possible source of problems with computer boards and interior porcelain enamel failure. Look at the broiler. Some higher end ranges have a infrared broiler that can be narrow, but widths of the broiler can vary. Look at the range of temperature and how can you use the fan? Some ovens only go down to 225F. Others might go down to 80F for proofing.

Without knowing anything about you and your family's needs, it's difficult to say whether you should get a 30" or a 36" range. How many burners do you regularly use? How many do you need when you entertain (if you do) and for holiday dinners? If 4 won't cut it, get a 36" range. Your kitchen is large enough to accommodate a 30" wall oven, too. Personally, I'd prefer to use the smaller oven most of the time so that I'm not working over a hot oven while cooking on the range. Another option would be to do a 36" cook top, a 30" wall oven and a 30" speed oven (MW combo, multi-function). Separate appliances cost more but, as DrB477 pointed out, 36" ranges are spendy. You didn't ask for lay-out advice but your lay-out doesn't make the best use of your kitchen's footprint. Your fridge and range are crowded together and your island's angled shape puts the sink farther away from perimeter counters than recommended, plus it provides limited counter space. Given the opportunity to take advantage of your misfortune (my sympathies), it seems a shame not to consider addressing these issues at the same time. Are you on a slab? Even if you are, can you move plumbing at all? If so, here's one possibility that relieves appliance crowding and gives you a larger island with more counter on each side of the sink plus a lot more room to work on each side of the range, and better work aisle widths. Do you have pantry space somewhere? Or are you doing pantry cabinets? There's room to add them to the above plan, either between wall oven/MW and fridge, creating a "wall of tall" or at one end or the other of the range run. Good luck with your rebuild! PS. If your fridge is a standard depth fridge, you may want to allow a wider aisle between fridge run and island. Or you could investigate recessing the fridge into the stud space a few inches.

Try looking at Frigidaire models. They are often the cheapest when compared to similar models with the same feature set from other manufacturers.

Tell us whether you want to spend $400 or $1000 or whatever your thinking is and we can make more specific recommendations.

You might try Craigslist.com, if you are in a decent size city--lots of appliances there, many used but not much. I have had good look at Sears outlets or other appliance outlets. Good luck.

I have had the Fridgidaire Professional Series dual fuel slide-in range for about 3 mos. and love it. It has everything that you're looking for, I think. Don't let reviews of Fridgidaire refrigerators scare you away from looking at this great range. I think it has the best designed cooktop out there in this price range.

Oops--I thought you were looking for dual-fuel. I got your post confused with winggert's. Look into the Fridgidaire anyway.

+1 on Frigidaire (or the Kenmore equivalent), especially if you want convection for cheap. My (non-convection) Frigidaire is almost three years old now and has been quite satisfactory.

I had a Kenmore/Frig non-convection gas range for 15 yrs: 2 power plus burners with digital controls/timer. Excellent range - the only reason I gave it up was to give it to my niece, a great cook, who had bought her first home with a crummy cheap Roper in it.

Replaced it with a Kenmore/Whirlpool gas range in 2002. After 5 yrs the control board died, no oven or broiler. It went a little wonky before that so I did have warning. Was SHOCKED at how much it costs to replace those boards - $370 plus labor!

Tried a "reconditioned" board to save money ($175 vs $370)- disastrous. Board died in 5 months; just had it replaced again (two days ago, in fact). Sprang for the new board and a 2 yr warranty, at which time I hope to replace this with a Lacanche or a Bluestar (woohoo!).

Outside of the board troubles, I love the performance of this stove. It has 2 Powerplus burners in front, a configuration I like a lot better than my old stove. The digital control temp on the oven is amazing, and on the burners it's even more amazing. I have never used a stove able to simmer so low, in some 40+ yrs of cooking on many different gas stoves.

Last year there was a discussion thread of "how long does it take your stove to boil 6 qts of tap water?" This range took 1 min longer than a Viking, which is pretty good considering it cost $900 (not counting those #%$&! controller boards, of course, LOL).

Bosch!!

My 30" bottom-of-the-line gas range came with convection, self-clean, and a warming drawer. I got it at a Sears ding & dent outlet. I love the cooktop--the grates are continuous, so you can move pots around from burner to burner.

We are in the same boat, so to speak... Our 30" gas range hasn't died completely, but is definitely in hospice right now. The one on it's deathbed is a Frigidaire that is at least 10 years old. It is a "professional series" model. It is the first gas oven that I've ever had. As an aside, all those "horror stories" about gas not baking well are total hogwash, IMHO. As long as you preheat it, your baked goods come out great. That is, until the thermostat goes, along with the control panel and you're facing a $500+ parts/repair bill...

I went looking this weekend and found that the Bosch will probably be the best way to go for us. A little more money than the direct replacement for the Frigidaire, but it has convection and a warming drawer and seems like a better product. Although, they also had a slide in Jenn-Air and a "used" demo Electrolux on the floor marked way down that peaked my interest. Still doing research on those.

Also check out the Sears outlet store and similar places if you have them around--they can have great deals (and often next-day delivery). Just try to figure out why they're AT the outlet store before you pick one out (someone ordered wrong color, dented, discontinued, etc.).
