How do I rid myself of Internet Explorer?

A new PC with Windows 7 is giving me headaches. I have downloaded Google Chrome as I want that for my browser. I have clicked that I want Chrome as my default browser but I still seem to have to use IT to get on Internet. I am dial up as some of you probably already know. My next move is to look into Verizon wireless air drive in hopes that I may be eligible for that. I don't get my hopes up though. That is another hurdle for a later date. Now I just want to be able to click on Earthink> CONNECT TO INTERNET> and then click Google Chrome on my desktop AND quickly I am connected to familiar territory.

Getting rid of Internet Explorer (even if it is possible, which I doubt) would cause you far more trouble than it is worth. IE is a fully integrated component of the Windows operating system and so many functions depend on it. If you don't want to use it, then don't...just leave it alone. Set Google Chrome as your default browser if that's what you want. Sounds like you need to configure Earthlink to launch Chrome instead of IE when you CONNECT TO INTERNET. Right-click on your Earthlink icon to see what your options are.

you can not get rid of IE it is part of the Windows operating system. If you choose not to use it just don't use it. you still have to have it in case you ever have to go to the windows update site or some of the other windows sites as they only use IE. And you still have to get all the updates for it for security reasons.

Even if Ie comes up just close it and click on the Chrome icon and open it and use it to go online instead. Mark it as default. If that does not work I would try firefox and see if it works it could be something conflicting with Chrome. But you can have as many browsers as you want and you can have more than one type open at the same time so even if IE does open just ignore and open which ever one you want to use.

I wouldn't bother fixing Internet Explorer 7. I would up date to version 9. It's the most current version for the operating system Vista. Here is a link that might be useful: explorer/ie-9

It has a link there after you highlight the event that takes you to a microsoft support page for the error details -- which may or may not have a known solution. Plus sometimes if you look on the Details tab for the event, you might get a hint of what program might be conflicting or some other piece of info that aims you in the general direction of what might be wrong. Sounds like maybe its one of the popular conflicts with a plug-in. Fairly easy to run from the start menu 'system tools/InternetExplorer(no plug-ins) Which means if that works all the time,,, you can go to Internet Options/ 'Manage add ons' .... and disable all of them,,,,, then turn them back on one at a time until you discover which one is the bad guy.

anyone still using IE6 on their computer is seriously jeopardizing the safety of their pc, MS stopped updating IE6, it is essential to update to a newer version asap. Websites are no longer supporting IE6 so many things will not work. The most important thing however is the huge holes in IE6 that are no longer being patched which leave you wide open to nasties. If you insist on not doing IE8 then definitely at the very least get IE7 NOW Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP Please understand that leaving IE6 on your pc and simply using a different browser does NOT necessarily help in blocking your exposure. Downloading and installing IE7 will take care of that so would IE8. Then if you choose to use firefox instead you are good to go but definitely update from IE6.
