Does GW hate Internet Explorer people?

It sure seems like they're trying to drive us away.... Those blank blank Opinion pop-ups are getting on my nerves... Why do they bother to ask if you want to take the survey if they don't understand the word NO???

I swear I get between 10 to 20 of them within the space of 10 minutes and it happens EVERY time I go to the Cooking forum or the Computer Help forum... And if one comes up while I'm trying to log on I can just forget it because it takes too long for the log on screen to come up.

I truly understand the need for advertising but being bombarded by pop-ups is NOT the answer... If I say I don't want to take the survey don't ask me again 10 seconds later... It just makes me mad...

And NO, I don't want to change browsers... If a site isn't Internet Explorer friendly I'm not sure if I want to go there.

I know (as you know) that the almost automatic answer (at Computer Help)to so many ads, and pop-ups problems here and elsewhere is to switch to a different browser. I've given that answer b4 myself. Sorry.

Have you asked over there specifically if there is anything to help the situation, and still use IE? I did a little bit of a search over there, and did not see it addressed.

Nope, seems the standard answer, anywhere on GW, is to change browsers... I was hoping one of the site administrators would see this and reply...

I get the survey pop-ups on every forum.. Last night it was so bad I just closed the browser, didn't bother logging off either, and went on to other things...

I'm not complaining about ads in general, this wouldn't be a free site if it weren't for the ads... It's just the idea of getting 20 of the SAME ad every 10 minutes... Can you imagine how many complaints GW would get if all the people with other browsers were getting that many?

I find the changing topic and confusion interesting since 4 or 5 varieties of the evening primrose grow wild on my land. Telling the O speciosa from the O kunthiana can be hard.. It is confusing out there in the front field. Normal wild Oenothera Kuntianas are a paler pink than this magenta creation which has been hybridized and jerked with. The OP plant is not representative of the wild plants around here. The spreading characteristic of O. speciosa will drive the orderly gardener bonkers but the one who likes to work with plant characteristics in their design will appreciate this and the accidents that enrich garden.. My first garden that I saw with it used years and years ago was a really sensitive example of plant characteristics used appropriately. It was a tall bluff with a rock wall about 6' tall and the "lawn"(I use that term loosely) rose in a grade above i the wall. The owner mowed the grass pretty short in early spring and the grass grew and the EP grew up through it and the rocks on the wall making a beautiful cascading effect and covering the grass completely where it grew . Then as summer drew near it disappeared and the owner mowed her grass again. It made me search it out years ago and , believe me, at the time it was not very available in the trade, except by raiding the fields. I got my start from her of the tall bluff. Here in Texas The pink Oenotheras are "spring ephemeral of sorts. It goes dormant and disappears with the beginning of EARLY summer.. SO do not get this plant and expect it to last through the summer. This is its behavior in Texas. Maybe it's behavior is different in Concord New Hampshire or Lansing Michigan. Heat does make it go away till the next year..Also the caterpillars love to eat its foliage. They are long gone in my garden right now. I like the idea for this "does your garden look like your character Thread". YES, YES AND YES. Mine is as disorderly as I am, absolutely.Good thread idea. I think that all should have tolerance of the latin name/common name confusions. Besides, Those latin names change with the mounting regularity these days pushed by the committees of arguing scientists. They do help but there is as much name confusions in them as there is in the common names. Eupatorium, ageratatina, conoclinium , what is it? I asked a salvia guy was it Salvia Reptans or Salvia leptophylla . It seemed like a simple question but he could not give me a simple answer because he did not know what one was the days right one today. The committees were't clear in their last statement... We can educate people to loose their fear of the mysterious latin name. and we can be tolerant of those like me who abuse all language that is given them. I think it is a mark of an intelligent person who is fluid and fills in the blanks and looks for the intended meaning , even when it is through muddy waters. - Mara, Queen of the Maraprop ( I mean malaprop)

well those toolbars come with many many programs if you do not read carefully when doing installs or updates including java, flash, and IE, many of them, in fact there is a hall of shame at COU forum listing all of the programs that now include pre selected toolbars in their install, it has nothing to do with the browser you use to do the download or install it has to do with watching what is pre checked when doing your updates or program installs and un checking any for things like toolbars. I have had to clean tons of toolbars off of peoples computers too who had never heard of firefox, only had IE. I tell people to add a second browser because it is a very good idea to always have at least 2 on the pc because as we all know IE can and does fail then leaving them no way to access the internet. Whether they select firefox, chrome or opera, it does not matter but firefox is the best known so when asking for help they will find more people that are familiar with it. All browsers have their pluses and minuses none are perfect and I have never seen anyone here say any one browser is perfect. the point to make to people who have loaded up their pc with toolbars, why this is happening to them, is to watch what they are doing! Pay attention to every single line when doing any type of install. And do not let it add unwanted items, if they are not told how it happened it will happen again. OK, without going to the dictionary, I say antediluvian means "before the flood" and is used to describe something very old. In 9th grade (in the antediluvian era of 1958) I had a crush on the special reading teacher. He worked with students to build reading speed, vocabulary and comprehension. It wasn't a remedial course and I really enjoyed it--and the teacher. I remember this word and his literal definition was "before the flood." Thanks for the 9 information. Without stepping on anyone's toes, could I join the needing help with this issue? If this should be a separate thread, please tell me... Approx 2 months, same problem with IE9. I know there had been an update a few days before I noticed the problem but thought I'd used the browser for same tasks for a few days after that. For the last few (8 or more) weeks, I have to type my username into Ebay sign in when I didn't before, and I can't leave or view feedback there with IE9 any longer. Shop, buy, pay - all fine. My bank, all else has been OK except GW....I can't log into GW either and Tamara hasn't been able to assist. I'm having to change browsers and use Firefox for the forums, and to leave feedback on Ebay...just those two places. Workable but annoying. Windows 7. I didn't intentionally change any settings or do anything where I could have unintentionally changed them that I'm aware of, and I do use CCleaner regularly, no big cookie stashes. I've moved Ebay cookies and GW cookies to the delete side of the CCleaner options, moved them back to the 'saves'...no difference.

This is getting down right ridiculous... Now I'm getting two at a time, QuestionMarket.com and Opinion - Center...

I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE ANY SURVEYS!!!!!!

You take one survey and the next thing you know you're on everybody's list and you end up with a ton of SPAM!

Hmmmmmmm....I don't get any pop-ups....

By the way...changing browsers does not mean you have to change ISP's. (not sure if you knew that)

not matter what browser I use.

I use PopUp Stopper from PanicWare (a very old free version).
I use OutPost firewall. And I edited my HOST file.

You can block 90% of that stuff using your HOST file.

Rita, I don't understand why you're fighting a simple solution. I use both IE and Firefox for different applications, but I would NEVER visit GW/THS using IE. That's a no-brainer!

But some of us have occasionally seen the opinion polls with FireFox. I saw some on the 16th as I recall.

That day I installed Flashblocker for another problem and I have not seen opinion polls since. Perhaps that is coincidence.

Some people have reported that they only see opinion polls when they are not logged in. Others report that is coincidence.

As long as I'm using Windows I will continue to use Internet Explorer.

I am not one to install programs when many others say they are great because I don't have the time or inclination to format the hard drive every time the Registry becomes corrupt from too many installs and un-installs.

Besides, Garden Web heard my rants and fixed the problem.

Albert, the 3 extensions I use are Flashblock, Adblock Plus, and Adblock Filterset.G Updater. No ads period!

Rita, I'm not aware of anyone having problems with Mozilla Firefox. If you're content with the way things are, that's all that matters.

I just downloaded a Windows update for IE 7 and had to LOL! They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Amazing how IE now has some of the same features as Firefox. Now if they could just do something about those unwanted ads. ;)

honestly if you don't wish to switch from IE to another browser then you are simply asking for punishment. IE was not made for users, but advertisers.

That is why IE users have more problems with ads than users of any other browser.

If you won't help yourself why on earth do you expect anyone else to help you? Download Firefox and it will automatically import all your IE links and settings to make things painless.

Complaining about how bad IE sucks on ad based web sites is like sticking your hand into a fire and complaining to god about making fire less hot. Ain't gonna happen. Help yourself or learn to accept the pain.

Or use two browsers. I use FireFox to read the nytimes and Gardenweb. I have everything blocked, no adds no banners, no colors etc.

But I use IE for paying bills, looking at catalogues, buying stuff.

I use IE 6 rather than 7, and I have no real trouble anywhere. Yesterday, I tried 7 - it was horrible ! And 7 was infested with an ad (Phishing....something...) that would not go away.
System Restore is great to have....

yes Rita, your question should be "Does Microsoft hate people?" if you insist on sticking with bloated unfriendly MS applications, update to IE7, as MS is finally copying the competition
