Difficulty Loading Internet Explorer

Hi,

I always read this forum (I'm a lurker here), but know little about computers, so visit to learn.

I know I might be better served by another internet program except that I need to use Japanese, and Internet Explorer supports it (Others may too, but I don't know, and installing the Japanese software and making it work for my wife was a challenge because I don't know the language myself).

In the last several months, our family has been experiencing trouble with loading IE. It will begin and then freeze. It will take an age to close. However, I can usually go to the start menu and open it there even while the first attempt is ending. Nevertheless it is annoying.

I have scanned the computer with AVG. I have unloaded and reloaded Zone Alarm. I have scanned with MalewareBytes, Spybot and AdAware. I run SpywareBlaster. I would unload IE and reinstall it, but I don't know how.

I have XP with 1 Gig RAM and 140 Gig hard drive. Have I missed anything?

Suggestions?

Steve can you please tell us which version of IE you are using is it 6 or 7 if version 6 then go ahead and update to version 7. You may also want to try getting version 8 which is now out and see if that helps, it sounds like you may have a corruption in your Ie somewhere. to find your version at the top click on Help> about > it will give you the version info.

Ravencajun,

I already had IE 7, so I installed IE 8 over it, rebooted and still have the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion though. It was a place to start.

well those toolbars come with many many programs if you do not read carefully when doing installs or updates including java, flash, and IE, many of them, in fact there is a hall of shame at COU forum listing all of the programs that now include pre selected toolbars in their install, it has nothing to do with the browser you use to do the download or install it has to do with watching what is pre checked when doing your updates or program installs and un checking any for things like toolbars. I have had to clean tons of toolbars off of peoples computers too who had never heard of firefox, only had IE. I tell people to add a second browser because it is a very good idea to always have at least 2 on the pc because as we all know IE can and does fail then leaving them no way to access the internet. Whether they select firefox, chrome or opera, it does not matter but firefox is the best known so when asking for help they will find more people that are familiar with it. All browsers have their pluses and minuses none are perfect and I have never seen anyone here say any one browser is perfect. the point to make to people who have loaded up their pc with toolbars, why this is happening to them, is to watch what they are doing! Pay attention to every single line when doing any type of install. And do not let it add unwanted items, if they are not told how it happened it will happen again. is it (Internet Explorer) showing in add remove programs? Start>control panel> add remove programs> do you see it listed there? if so click to hilight and then try a repair there. If no go then re download and re install it really helps us though if you do answer the questions we ask, I know I have asked if you have firefox, and what scans you have done and if you have used malwarebytes. It is hard to know which way to go with out info. I understand you have DSL with ATT and they provide free certain AV programs, I also get free McAfee with my ISP but I had to go in, download and install it, and personally set it all up and make sure it was all functioning it did not come pre-configured or installed, so knowing what you actually have and how it is set up and if it is updated are all things that are important. Malware is any type of spyware, adware, or nefarious programs that can get onto your computer, there fore a malware remover would be one that removes all these types of infections. Antivirus programs do not necessarily remove them. AdAware is not as good a program as it once was so it is not the best one to use, the malwarebytes program I provided the link to is an exceptional free program that will remove the most recent malware types. Often we do see malware that will cause problems like you are mentioning which is why we have been asking these questions. Awaiting further answers. Don't worry I am an old lady with faulty memory also, if only it was just my memory that was failing! it sure ain't for sissies LOL

I dunno,, some thoughts; You can open a command prompt, or maybe type CMD in the run line, and type in at the prompt ; traceRt www.yahoo.com and see if it works to completion,,, to stop it CtrL+C if needed. If it doesnt resolve that url name into a longer named url and IP#'s... and the same down the list of hops,,,, there is a command you might try to flush your dns cache;;; ipconfig /? one of the options should be to Flush DnS cache,,do that like this most likely;; ipconfig /flushdns Then try the 'traceRt www.yahoo.com again and see if it works. If still not working next would be you Might want to look in IE internet Options, under the connections tab. Probably should be set to never dial a connection.. then push the LAN button while there, and uncheck all the boxes there if checked. Another thing you might look at is windows services,,, you might right click the myComputer icon and select Manage. Down near the bottom you should see Services,, expand that out until you see a list of services,,, one of the services is DNS ,,, if it doesnt say Automatic and show as Started,,, double click it,, set it to auto,, and push the start button. I dont know if you understand the HOSTS file,, something may have blocked everything... might look in it -- it has a small explanation on top that maybe you can understand. Sounds like you have a google search bar and it knows its own ip. I hate search bars. heh.

Debi, My posts were intended to be informational status reports not links to the patches. It was just before 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. exactly at the time. Have you looked at your 'Event Viewer' log files ?
Might type that into a windows help search box if you dont know how to access it.

I did a search and came up with an Error: Application Hang, Category (101), Event 1002.
Does that help?

It has a link there after you highlight the event that takes you to a microsoft support page for the error details -- which may or may not have a known solution.
Plus sometimes if you look on the Details tab for the event, you might get a hint of what program might be conflicting or some other piece of info that aims you in the general direction of what might be wrong.

Sounds like maybe its one of the popular conflicts with a plug-in. Fairly easy to run from the start menu 'system tools/InternetExplorer(no plug-ins)
Which means if that works all the time,,, you can go to Internet Options/ 'Manage add ons' .... and disable all of them,,,,, then turn them back on one at a time until you discover which one is the bad guy.
