Difficulty Loading Internet Explorer

Hi,

I always read this forum (I'm a lurker here), but know little about computers, so visit to learn.

I know I might be better served by another internet program except that I need to use Japanese, and Internet Explorer supports it (Others may too, but I don't know, and installing the Japanese software and making it work for my wife was a challenge because I don't know the language myself).

In the last several months, our family has been experiencing trouble with loading IE. It will begin and then freeze. It will take an age to close. However, I can usually go to the start menu and open it there even while the first attempt is ending. Nevertheless it is annoying.

I have scanned the computer with AVG. I have unloaded and reloaded Zone Alarm. I have scanned with MalewareBytes, Spybot and AdAware. I run SpywareBlaster. I would unload IE and reinstall it, but I don't know how.

I have XP with 1 Gig RAM and 140 Gig hard drive. Have I missed anything?

Suggestions?

Steve can you please tell us which version of IE you are using is it 6 or 7 if version 6 then go ahead and update to version 7. You may also want to try getting version 8 which is now out and see if that helps, it sounds like you may have a corruption in your Ie somewhere. to find your version at the top click on Help> about > it will give you the version info.

I already had IE 7, so I installed IE 8 over it, rebooted and still have the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion though. It was a place to start.

No you are doing nothing wrong Gene. I read an article somewhere that MS had deliberately set it that way, crazy in my mind. I seem to have dragged mine out enough times that it has quit fighting with me and I had not realised it till you posted the question. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. Click here Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application. Â Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. iexplore is what you run Whatever its home page is set to is what you will see when it starts up. So if the home page is set to Google.. that is what you see. If you want to change its home page, type into the address bar www.msn.com or what you want for the home page.. go to the page then typically click the gear on upper right and select internet options then you will see where to set the home page, set it to the page you have open by pressing the 'use current' button.

A few things to try: A freezing Laptop or computer can be a number of things, heat is the number 1 issue in laptops. Hard drive issues can also cause freezing issues, as well as ram and other things. On a Win7 computer I'd start with booting to the Advanced Options menu by restarting the computer hold the F8 key down during restart. Wait for the menu to load. Select the Repair Your Computer option from the list, then hit enter. The next thing I would try is running System File Checker from an elevated command prompt. To do that: Click > Start, in the search box type in cmd right click on it and run as administrator. When the black command window is open on the desktop copy this sfc /scannow now paste it into the black window hit enter and let it run.

Have you looked at your 'Event Viewer' log files ?
Might type that into a windows help search box if you dont know how to access it.

I did a search and came up with an Error: Application Hang, Category (101), Event 1002.
Does that help?

It has a link there after you highlight the event that takes you to a microsoft support page for the error details -- which may or may not have a known solution.
Plus sometimes if you look on the Details tab for the event, you might get a hint of what program might be conflicting or some other piece of info that aims you in the general direction of what might be wrong.

Sounds like maybe its one of the popular conflicts with a plug-in. Fairly easy to run from the start menu 'system tools/InternetExplorer(no plug-ins)
Which means if that works all the time,,, you can go to Internet Options/ 'Manage add ons' .... and disable all of them,,,,, then turn them back on one at a time until you discover which one is the bad guy.
