Suggestions for an all ELECTRIC range as a focal point..

Looking for ideas for an all electric range, that will be a focal point in the kitchen. Unfortunately everything that I love is only available in all gas, or dual fual. I'm not a serious cook but am going for an overall look. The home we are building is an antique reproduction so anything too modern looking is out. If I lived in Europe it seems as if my choices would be endless. Would love something that is available in color.

Options we've looked at include:

AGA traditional 2-oven electric cooker (too expensive to run, for my cooking habits)

AGA Legacy (still a contender)

Elmira Stoveworks (prefer the all gas model which is not an option for me)

Viking all electric (more modern than I originally wanted but could live with it, but wish it was available larger)

Ranges I wish I could get in all Electric AGA 6-4, Cornue Fe, LaCanche. Bertazzoni.

Any thoughts, recommendations or info. on soon to be available models that I am not aware of.

The Aga traditional electric cooker is slated to come out with off/on controls. But who knows when?

Also check out Heartland Appliances. They make electric repro ranges for their "Classic" series. Unfortunately, I can't tell you anything about how they perform, repair record, etc.

Thanks for the link Martha. I'll have to inquire about the AGA shut off. I'd buy the 6-4 in a second if it were all electric but then I guess they wouldn't have named it 6-4.
What did you decide to do about your range/floor model?

After 3 years, the roots should have pretty well rotted, from the BW - I don't think it will pose a problem. I don't know if it would be hardy for you, but I have seen a new Oakleaf hydrangea cultivar here - 'Little Honey'. It has, as suggested by the name, golden yellow leaves, some with a red tinge (very attractive, and I don't LIKE yellow-leaved plants as a rule!), and is supposed to stay under 4'-6' here, as I recall, so it may be too small, but there are other smaller Oakleaf hydrangeas that might do. They do have good fall colors, as well as the flowers. There are native shrubs that have great fall colors - Iteas or Clethras - as well as attractive early to mid summer flowers. Both of these can sucker to form colonies, but I find the suckers easy enough to dig/pull out in the spring - either pot them up to give away or plant elsewhere, or toss them in the compost pile. A variegated evergreen might be attractive - flowers not needed then. How about a holly - you can prune it easily for size if it starts to outgrow the space? Most of the variegated ones I know of are males, but there may be females as well, so you could have berries. There are always the winter colors of red- or yellow-twig dogwoods, although they may be less interesting in the summers, or in flower. If clematis grows in your area, you could grow one (or more) through whatever shrub you planted, and have the summer interest from the clematis flowers, instead of a plain green plant. It could confound your visitors, as the flowers and plant would have a mismatch! Clematis grows lightly enough that it won't strangle or smother the shrub.

At under $2000, I think the only potentially-sexy ranges are electrolux (because they look different/more modern) and the Kenmore 40" models, if you can fit them - those 40"ers have a lot of presence, and could definitely make a centerpiece. It looks like you are looking for electric, with the reference to glass tops, but if gas is an option you could also look at NXR. At a couple hundred more, you could go for GE Cafe. Alternately, I am *sure* you can get something sexier for sub-$2000 if you haunt warehouse/clearance outlet options, or if you look for the right vintage range on craigslist/ebay...there are some really cool older colored ranges out there for surprisingly cheap, if you are in the right area.

Rosa 'Iceberg'. It is nearly thornless. Iochroma 'Purple Queen', it will need some stakes to get it to grow vertically, and periodic trimming (2x-3x year) but provides nectar for hummingbirds and will bloom year round. Salvia 'Amistad' will need periodic trimming (4x/year+ fertilizer 3-4x/year) but is another plant with purple flowers nearly year round that hummingbirds love. 6x6 is about right for it.

I can see option 2 working the best, but hopefully there is some flexibility at this point. Consider improved functionality, as well as (eventual) resale. You can gain a wider area between kitchen/seating area by changing the opening on lower right to be near kitchen. Now seating area can be moved down! Suggest an island (longer than peninsula if possible) to gain access on both sides, added storage, wider if possible for better entertaining (ie: buffet). I’d move sink/dishwasher to be near dish storage and to keep island/peninsula clear. People will gravite here. A focal wall with built in electric fireplace would feel spacious, be a great feature in your open concept, and keep that space uninterrupted to get to opposite side of room. Opposite wall idea. There is a lot to consider and thinking about overall functionality is key before furniture placement. Hopefully you have a floor plan with exact dimensions, structural components and space requirements to make the best decisions. Good luck.

Hi Jenn,

I decided to stick with the brand new one after all! The $1300 I would save by taking a 4-year old floor model is just not enough of a bargain for me. Plus, I've since learned that the Six-Four has just been upgraded. My new range will be one of the upgrades. I think I'd rather cash in on the recent improvements as well as have some peace of mind in knowing that my straight from the factory range was made just for me! :)

I'm sure you'll be very happy with your range. Turns out there is an all electric version of the 6-4 and the companion (called module), but of course only available in Europe. I'd love to get my hands on one.
I may need to have propane installed to get a decent looking range, athough I'm trying to avoid this as propane will not be our heat source and we do need to keep our construction budget in control, it just seems to be another added cost.

There ARE people here who have imported appliances. Sounds scary. Heartland does have some fans but there aren't a lot of people with them. I've never seen anything bad about them though.

I like the Legacy. Great knobs, too.

And there is always the option of an actual old range, especially if you're not THAT into cooking. The electric ones are somehow less scary than antique gas ones, and can be just as neat looking. (Put an induction hob in a subtle location if you need more power occasionally.) Here's the first one popping up on my local craigslist...

I thought Legacy when your post came up, but you could also look to some great refurbished ranges. I used to have a huge white range in an old place we were in that was from the 50's. It was gorgeous and had two ovens and a small broiler oven, much like an Aga but it was some basic brand (don't remember which). I've seen some that have been refurbished that just sing :) They'd be so much nicer than a cold old viking :oP

Fori- Thanks for the link. I like the idea of putting an induction hob in a subtle location. I actually considered using a smooth electric or induction in a "Hutch style" setup with a wall oven in the pantry or underneath the cooktop with pocket doors like those made by yestertec. DH really would prefer more of a focal point.

Igloo- I'll be interested to hear how you like your Legacy. I know it for a future rental, but if I remember correctly you'll be living there temporarily. Which handles did you order? I like both options, DH doesn't like the spiral. We'll probably end up with the Legacy, but I'm am still so drawn to the cast iron of the 6-4 and the traditional AGA.

I actually like that Yestertec look very much! As for the Legacy, I like both handles as well but probably lean towards the spirals. On the matter of the Aga cast iron, I understand completely. Once I got drawn in, it was only a matter of time; I could not let go! I agree with Fori that there are plenty of people who import their Aga cookers from the UK. Also, make sure to go on eBay, you can often find cookers for sale there,(although I'm not sure how many electric ones you'll find.)

Martha- I too really like the idea of a Yestertec setup but as I mentioned DH really prefers a focal point. Either version would work well in our home. Of course a focal range would be more impressive looking as the wall the range will be on is directly opposite a sitting area and brick fireplace with a (non-functioning) bee-hive oven.

Foodnut- Thanks for the info. regarding the CornuFe, but I can't find any info. on it being available in all electric only dual fuel.
