Focal point species suggestion wanted

This an amended copy of a message I just posted to the "Design Forum."

We are looking for ideas for a planting in a relatively small area (5 ft x 5 ft x 7 feet high, all max) adjacent to the entrance deck of our home. About a third of the planting area lies directly under a dry building eave. It gets pretty good sun facing due south but blocked by buildings from harsh afternoon rays, from 10 am to maybe 3 in the afternoon. The two feet of soil that fills a large ground level concrete planter is custom made from topsoil, compost, a little sand, and sits on a well drained limestone/soil base. Only about 6 feet away is an old stump of walnut, about 3 years gone.

My wife is suggesting a small Japanese Maple even though we are in zone 4 (southern Wisconsin) or a small hydrangea. I had some sort of architectural/urn-like thing in mind, perhaps with some room for annuals. The spot calls for something striking that will lead visitors onto the deck and to our many gardens.

How about some sort of airy shrub or compact tree that will have a nice winter structure?
