Small vanity, mirror/lighting sizes?

We have a tiny powder room with a very small vanity, and I want to buy a new mirror and lighting fixture soon. We don't have enough space for sconces on the wall, so we have to go with a bar fixture.

Vanity is 25" w.

Backsplash to ceiling is 46 1/4"

What size mirror should I buy? This bathroom is used a lot in the early morning when one of us has to leave earlier than the other, so the mirror is for grooming.

I have been looking at lighting fixtures (bar type) in sizes 10" w - 18" w.

Any suggestions?

Mari, we had a similar situation, but if the room is being used for grooming I would really recommend going with sconces even if you don't think you have the room. According to all the advice from the experts I googled, we didn't have room for sconces either. I really wanted sconces since everyone said they gave much better and more flattering light (and who are we kidding, we need all the help we can get). I got a big sheet of mirror and had the sconces mounted on the mirror.

Here is a pic of our mirror. Our vanity is 22.5" wide.

If this really isn't an option for you then I would get a framed mirror with dimensions slightly smaller than your vanity width. If you are getting something prefab youre probably going to be looking at 24"x36"

That's interesting. Is the mirror covering the entire wall? I will ask my electrician whether we could use sconces. I originally had planned a recessed medicine cabinet but apparently there are lines behind the wall so nothing could be recessed.

If you want to use a medicine cabinet I would probably stay with the 24 inch and use side lights. You'll need to keep in mind that a bar light above the medicine cabinet will need to extend enough to clear the depth of the cabinet, so finding such a light may be difficult. There are cabinets that have built-in lights so you may want to look at those. Check these out. If you choose a cabinet with built-in lights, I'd go with a wider than 24" cabinet. Other option: keep the light fixture you have and put in a framed, or unframed mirror that is a little wider than the lights. Here are some visuals.

The size of the 3 light is a good size. Yes, I think these look kind of heavy. Maybe if your frame on the mirror is a really thick frame, that might help. Other than that I would go for something with a thinner bar. See some options below. If you get a chance, please post a picture of your mirror. "so if I use a 26 w by 36" tall would that look to overpowering" What's the purpose of having the mirror 2" narrower than the vanity on each side? I don't know what "overpowering" refers to.

I would do one large mirror with the two lights for the larger vanity. And one mirror with a single light over the smaller.

We also have a small powder room which we updated last year. The mirror we installed is tall but narrow (16") but the lighting is via pendants. They provide very nice lighting. However the room is primarily as guest accommodation not daily family grooming. Photos are linked from "My Page".
