Is it save to allow Lexmark/ Microsoft techs on pc

I really need to know asap if it's safe to allow these people remote access to my pc. I'm having issues with my printer and don't know what to do. Your thoughts please

If YOU initiate the contact to tech support, using a phone number from a User Manual or from the legit website of the company, I'll suggest it's 100% OK. I've done it a number of times myself for both hardware and software issues, it's very useful.

On the other hand, there has been an explosion of scam phone calls in the past few years that sound something like this:

"Hello, is this Gloria?" (they may have a correct name to go with the phone number, that's public information).

"This is Sanjay from Windows Security" or Windows Support or Microsoft or whatever. The calls I've received have been from people with Indian/Pakistani accents.

"We've gotten a report that your PC has a bad virus........." At this point I hang up.

For an unsolicited/uninitiated call like that, simply hang up. It's phony, a ruse. No individual or company outside your home knows whether you have or haven't a virus problem, don't speak with them or give any payment card information.

I got a few of those calls, after it happened the second time I started telling them I don't have a PC, you should have heard the silence. I did get one more and when I told him I didn't have a PC, he said....why. LOL

RC, Not sure what you mean by copy and type what it shows for the question you're having problems with. I can't register, so, I can't reply to the thread. I feel like such a dunce. I'll keep watching the thread and perusing the loads of info they have there. On the anti-bot question: What's the code? The color that matches its name is Orange, right? Number of letters that's repeated in the recording is 5, right? Sorry if I shouldn't be mentioning this here, but I know it's simple. I guess I'm even more simple because I can't figure it out.

I'm so glad to have more input.. I'm not alone. I must believe that if my iPad and iPhone are working that the PC works. Yes? I would like to buy a monitor about 23 inches. One that will work with Win 7 and Win 8. I looked at PC Mag and their top ten that can be bought at Amazon are very expensive - 1,000. Funny on Amazon the ones w/4 + stars have many in my price range of $200-300. If my computer works I can use I Cloud and Picasso to store docs and graphics. Yes? Then if my current PC dies I can still pick up my saved files off the PC on a new machine Yes? My Azus PC came with 10 USB ports. . 5 are in the front. All but 1 are dead. The computer was a Best Buy recommendation and a terrible catastrophe before it left the store. It was replaced with another Azuz and with help from Landzdown and here it at least runs. Before I reinstall, Owbitz, I need a monitor. Mine now is a simple Samsung 19 inches. I read that when Win 8 becomes mandatory we will want a touch screen monitor which sounds utterly tiring. I can also look on YouTube and google to see what I can find on flying library repair. EmmaR - it was your advice to use my desktop for files and I have been afloat because of that. I will start a new post asking for recommendations. If you have more insight for me, I will look back here. I have a few questions I asked above concerning I Cloud and Picasso or Photobucket. I agree with acraftylady. I used lots of the free software and wasn't satisfied that they were good enough in today's world. I also ran a good software that wasn't free and had lots of trouble with their updates. They were rated as one of the best. I decided to try the much-maligned Norton products and haven't been happier. No troubles and very nice customer support. Piasano, as suggested here by another, use Norton's "chat" tool to work with this company. If necessary Norton will be able to lock into your pc to check it and see for themselves where the problem is coming from. It's a safe tool and they will unlock and break all contact with you when they resolve your PC's problem. Along with others in the industry, top Norton security personnel works with our government to detect and resolve hacker and other security problems.

I think I might be leery about having printer techs on the computer. Printers are very cheap these days so unless you can get a price prior to allowing access you might want to consider buying a new printer. Unless you have a more expensive professional type machine of course.

When I said "website of the company", I was thinking Lexmark, etc, not a computer repair or service company.

I agree with his comment, printers are too cheap to pay to fix. If a printer isn't working properly and is outside the warranty period, get a new one.
