Do you still have the driver disk for the printer? You may even need to download a Vista driver from the printer manufacturer's website.

Do you mean the installation disk? I do have that. Do I have to use the installation disk on the laptop, too? I just sent an email to the manufacturer of the printer, too. Thanks.

I was able to flush the dns on both the xp and vista laptops. But I still can't connect either laptop wirelessly to the "fmaily room" network (which is still unsecured). I cannot access the Nat,spi or firewall soI don't know if that's the problem. Both laptops show a strong signal (full bars) to the family room network - but don't connect. They do connect via wired connection (does this mean I have so far created a network switch). On both laptops I selected "family room" as the preferred network to connect to. But both connected to my Lynn network (from the opposite corner of the house - with only a weak signal). On the Vista laptop it says Windows cannot connect to "family room" - and when asked to connect to family room, it said "Windows association failed due to an unknown reason." When I selected "diagnose and repair, it said Windows did not find any problems with your Internet connection." Then I tried one further thing. I saw on the Vista laptop that it still listed the family room network as having WPA2 security - so i changed what the laptop had for listed for family room network to reflect no current security settings. Then I tried to connect again. It wouldn't connect. Then I clicked repair/diagnose - and it said "this network is marked as a "hidden" network and is either not in the range of this computer or the wireless settings saved on this computer do not match the settings of the network." It is in range of the network - 3 feet away and receiving a full strong signal. So perhaps the network settings do not match the router or access point (although I'm not sure where to look to check this since I think I set it all up to match). The other thing is says is "if you own or set up this network, reset your wireless router or access point and try connecting again." Should I try this? Does it mean unplugging SMC access point, linksys router and modem - waiting and replugging them in? If so, in what order? Or does this mean resetting the SMC completely and starting from scratch? So now what? Jane - I realize that Mikie's the guy - and I very much appreciate his help. Those links helped me get clearer on definitions, but don't really get specific enough to address these set up complications. Thank you. Lynn.

jemdandy, I think you have some misconceptions. One wirelessly connected device produces no burden on a router, there's no need to switch off a radio if the device is connected and functioning as is. At times I can have 12 or more devices wirelessly connected to my network and you wouldn't know the difference. One consideration is that many wifi transceivers (routers) have a practical limitation in the mid-teens of MB throughput (like maybe 14-16 megs) and so those dozen devices can't all be streaming video before there's a slowdown or confusion. Nor would most people's Internet connections provide enough bandwidth to do that anyway. But at lower levels of sustained rates or bursts, like internet surfing, emailing, or streaming audio, there's no issue for any user, each would think they are the only one active on the network. Keep in mind that "wifi" is nothing more than the wireless signal connection to a network, it isn't something separate. A wirelessly connected printer is the same as one connected by wire, it can be set up to be visible to all network connected devices, no matter how they are connected.

I am a new PC owner-receiving an Acer 5532 wireless laptop for Xmas. The cable co. hooked me up yesterday w/my bundled service. I'm a bit upset as the cable rep told me he'd help hook up my webcam & printer. This unit has the new 7 installed but no built in webcam. When he atempted to hook it into the system-a screen said it was not compatible with 7. Grrr. Ravencajun..thank you for the link above to get me started. I haven't run a 'puter since 1996-and that was just my company's program, so I'm CLUELESS how to navigate this laptop! I have been using an msn2 unit and (prior to that- a webtv unit) for the past 12 years- If there are any other links to a tutorial on how to use all of the functions..can anyone link me or will the above link be all I need? My biggest fear is not knowing how to transfer my folders' contents from msn unit to the new pc. My new email is set up-haven't tried it yet. I did move all photos stored in my photos file,into a 'share photos' folder- which one MSN webber said:"Your favorites are already stored on Sky Drive Windows Live. They'll be mirrored on Sky Drive Windows Live on your computer at your present users address." (my msn addy or the new addy?) ??? Yeah right..so how do I transfer them to the PC? I am such a ROOKIE! Yes, the software drivers have to be installed on every computer that will utilize the printer (think of it as an interpreter between the two devices).

Thanks for your help, pkponder. I installed the software on my laptop, and everything is up and running.

This morning when I turned on my laptop, though, I got a message telling me that Windows Firewall had blocked the printer monitor that I installed. Of course, I read the dire results of allowing an exception... and I'm afraid to allow it, to be honest. I guess I have to, though, in order to use the printer? I used the printer fine (from my laptop) last night, after installing the software, so the Firewall blocking this morning surprised me.

You do have to allow it access and ask that it remember the setting. Firewalls do give dire warnings don't they? ;-)
