Homegroups?? What can they Do?

Will try to be brief: new desktop computer, old laptop, wireless connection for desktop, laptop, and printer. Works great no problems. Both computers run Windows 7 However in Windows 7 there is a thing called Homegroups. Can not get to work. Googled and read all I can on the topic, just can't get one set up. I am missing something on set up. So before I keep trying to get one set up I need to know what a homegroup can do!

What I would like to have is when I do something in a file on my desktop, it would show up in the same file in the laptop. ie, recipes that I download from the internet onto my desktop I would like to be able to see them on the laptop without me having to physically move them with a flash drive. Is this possible? Is this what a homegroup can/will do? If so, then I will keep trying. If not, I will move on!

Also noted this..."Groups is not available in the Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium editions."

Could that be part of your problem?

Hi again, I'm sorry no one has come up with an answer. I think it is something fungal also, because of how the leaves get worse and all brown. Bugs can make swiss cheese of leaves, but the leaves don't seem to curl up and die. But I don't know what exact disease is attacking your plants. I even searched for buddleia diseases and pests and came up empty. Do you have a cooperative extension service, like how I have Cornell here, or a very good nursery near you? I would take samples in sealed plastic bags to be examined. I hope you find an answer, Remy

What have you done so far? Did you go through the network and sharing settings of Control Panel, set up a homegroup with the wizard (and then you're given a short password), and then try to connect the PCs to it? What version of Windows?

you will be fine, 12 lb is perhaps a bit wasteful but not a lot. I have posted in the cornucop forum recently about this, because I am consistently able to grow large garlic. my routine is far simpler than yours, just raised beds, mulch with leaves (or wood chips if I can get them), and one shot of nitrogen in early spring. I have alkaline clay. I do not add P even though the original soil was nearly P-free (though some P may have gotten there when rotating potatoes into the bed). I do have wood in the beds to promote fungi and repeated mulching over the years has enriched the soil some. I grow about 300 plants per year, for 3 families plus some for friends and replanting.

I'd take a saw to it and loosen those roots. If it's going into the ground this is your only chance to try and open up the roots and get them going in the right direction. I'd likely saw off a good inch or two from the bottom and deeply score the sides so I could get my fingers in there and start working. I'd do this when I had a lot of time, wasn't in a hurry, I'd do it in shade, and I'd have a spritzer bottle of water nearby so things didn't dry out too badly while I was working. I'd have the hole dug and ready for it, too. If you really have to go at it be sure and devise some type of shade for it at planting. It will be stressed and the roots will be unable to provide enough moisture for full sun conditions for the first couple of weeks. I use stakes, clothespins, and an old sheet or floating row cover. And make sure the water actually penetrates when you water. You'll have to baby it for a bit but they usually recover quite well given deep watering and a bit of time in the shade.

Homegroups is little more than Microsoft's current method of streamlining file sharing, a feature that's at the very core of networking. The whole point of networking is being able to share information.

All you need to do is put your recipes in a folder and share that folder. Then you can access it from any computer on your home network. There's a bunch of options that go along with sharing including making files read only or restricting access by user.

every single thing you want to put in that home group must MUST have the same group name on the individual item so if you have one thing as my computer and another as my laptop etc it will not work you have to go in and set them all up with one Group name.

Shax: I have googled and read a LOT of those, went to the windows7forum, and read extensively at microsoft.com's information on homegroups, networks, etc. Still can not get homegroups to work and both computers are running Windows 7 Home Premium edition.
Mike: I have a home network set up using a Linksys router. Both computers and the printer are on that network. I can see it in the Network section of control panel on both computers. I know the network is there.
Raven: the files on both computers have the same names. At least if I understand....the folder names are the same on both....files vs folders the same thing right?
This is what is going on:
Per the instructions from Microsoft, I set up a Homegroup on the desktop, I have a password for it. I go to the laptop to join that homegroup and when I open "network and internet" in the control panel and go to homegroup, there is not an option to join, it just indicates that it has joined a homegroup. It is like there are two separate homegroups setup and neither computer can join the other's homegroup. Each computer has a separate homegroup password and I don't know how to get them together. And as far as I can tell the files are not being shared
I am missing something and don't know what it is. And I can't find the answer in the windows7forums or the extensive information at microsoft.com.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Your patience is greatly appreciated. I seem to know just enough to get myself messed up!

no I mean each computer has it's own work group name that is the name that must be the same all of them must have the same group name in the computer settings to be able to join that home group.

are you trying to add something that has other than windows 7 to your homegroup? for example does something run xp?

If so there are some specific steps that have to be taken to make that happen. I had to search and search to find it when I set mine up, I finally found the solution on another forum but I may still have the directions. I got everything set up and working and this is how I had to do it for printer. Look down the list till you get to Jimbo and read his solution.

Thank you again. Both computers have Windows 7 Home Premium OS. I have a wireless network created. I can create a homegroup on one computer. When I go to the other computer to join that homegroup, the option to join is not there. It indicates that it is already part of a homegroup, just not the one I created on the first computer. I have tried to leave the homegroups in both computers and start over but get the same thing. When I look at the password for the homegroup on each computer, they are different which indicates to me that there are two separate homegroups, one on each computer and they don't share the files.
This is really frustrating and I sincerely appreciate your help. I have read almost all of the information on the Windows7forum and can't find the answer. I will do some searching on the dummies site...since I am a dummie....LOL
I may just give up and continue using a flash drive to move the files I want to share.
