Oh dear, what did I do....HELP Zep

Hi, I just put my new ram in. After I put the machine all back together and turned it on....the first thing I saw was a black screen and the message said "invalid system disk. Replace disk and then press any key". I installed the crucial 256 MB. Did I put it in the wrong slot maybe?

Check to see if there is a disk in any drives first. Let us know.

Make sure there is no floppy or CD disk in the drives. The error message suggests a disk is in there.

When you installed the new 256 megs was there only one extra slot to add it in? Did the 2 white clips at either end snap into place indicating the memory seated correctly?

You did remove the power cord before inserting the new memory of course?

None of this is suggesting you did it wrong but eliminating possibilities is the only way to find the answer some times.

Michele, I confess to a zinnia addiction. Growing zinnias is a hobby with me. You can make your own F1 hybrid zinnias by cross-pollinating commercial strains. Crossing zinnias is easy, and there seems to be no end to the number of different zinnia crosses that you can make. Uproar Rose is a slightly different color from Purple Prince. Zinnias are capable of a lot of fine color nuances. Zinnia colors are determined by several different genes, so there are many different color possibilities in zinnias. This specimen from last year was the result of crossing a two-color Whirligig zinnia with a solid color zinnia. It shows nuances of two colors in its petals. I hope to develop strains of darker colors by selecting the darkest colors from commercial strains. Your growing season is probably shorter than mine, but it is probably not too late for you to plant zinnia seeds now, even if you had to take time to order them online. I plan to plant zinnia seeds in-ground up into July, which will still give me time to enjoy them and save seeds from selected specimens before our killing frost. Johnny's Selected Seeds still has most of their Benary's Giant series in stock. They also carry a selection of Giant Dahlia flowered zinnias. I think that noxious weed growing on the ground is called ground ivy. I am not sure exactly what it is, but I just call it yard cancer because it spreads all over the place. I pull it out literally by the buckets. That is not the worst problem. If you look at the Freisinger Morgenrote and Olympiad pictures, in the background growing up the tree trunk and not limited to that location, it is what looks to me like a sizeable stand of poison ivy. It grows all over here. It is trying to spread into the yard also. I sprayed it with an appropriate weed killer. Hopefully it will die off. I have a creek running through the property, and there is all sorts of stuff and sometimes critters back there where I don't even mess with it. That situation might change if I were to win the lottery and have some money to somehow integrate both sides of the property into a unit, but the area is a wooded area amidst all the houses and businesses. I would like to be able to keep all the trees, and the city might also have final say as to what can and cannot be done with the creek.

To bzamp58 Hi, I make and decorate cakes. I have NO trouble at all with my recipes for doing cakes. I always use the roller. Just make sure you do the wet ingredients first. The add the dry. My cakes are light, moist, fluffy. (As with all recipes and the DLX the wet should go in first dry last). Thanksgiving...Whip Cream! My granddaughter is not too familiar with my DLX...was using white bowl and beaters, she said I can do the whip cream Gram. Huh well we had chunky almost butter whip cream! The look on her face was priceless. How we laughed! Just added a tablespoon of cream to the 2 cups whipped and consistency was fine for the pumpkin pie! And I am thrilled this year to have my DLX for all my Christmas cookie orders! So much easier! Last year I used my 1980 Kitchen Aid and did 3000 cookies in three weeks. I had been so booked with wedding cookies so got a late start! Still got a late start this year cause we did a total "kitchen make-over"! But now my wonderful DLX and new kitchen...I am so blessed! Time to get Pecan Tassies out of oven. May all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I have an Amana bottom freezer drawer refrigerator (ice maker in the drawer not the outside door). Opening one door gives me a view of the whole contents, not just half were you have to open both doors anyway as the French door models are designed. Although, my DS and DIL have a 4 door French with the clear view little door for bottles on one side and a ice and water dispenser on the other door front I didn't like it, seldom used the dispensers and had to open all 3 doors to find something. I suppose if it is your refrigerator you'd remember where stuff was. However, the biggest drawback was that to open the full bottom crisper you had to open both doors wide to pull it out. I use my crisper's a lot and that would be a negative in my kitchen. OTOH Side by side refrigerator/freezers greatly reduce the available space in both. I couldn't slide in a cookie sheet to chill in the narrow freezer of my previous SXS, and being deeper than wide the refrigerator part meant everything was in the way back. I am much happier with my bottom freezer refrigerator with adjustable shelves that pull out to see the way back and can configure the shelves however suits me (example was defrosting a big turkey and still have all the other shelves adjusted for the other stuff). I also have an upright freezer in my kitchen which is wonderful because a bottom freezer has limited space, as does the SXS freezer's compartment. Out in my canning/baking kitchen I have a large deep freezer, and two refrigerator-only units. To do my real kitchen over I'd have an upright freezer and a refrigerator-only unit, maybe a small ice maker on one side and a wine cooler too. But, then I'd have to build a bigger house.....

Another possibility is that when you put the RAM in, you jostled one of the cables (power or data) going to the hard drive. That's distressingly easy to do. I've learned not to completely reassemble the case until I've successfully rebooted and verified that I can use the CD/DVD. Then I power back down and finish the assembly.

Here is where I enter one of those blue faced icons! It was a disk in my floppy! I was so nervous and scared that I'd mess something up! Thanks to you all for all the helpful suggestions. How do I know that upgrade was successful? Where do I look to see if it is recognized?

you can go to my computer click that then on the left click where it says view system information it will open a new box and on the general tab it gives your pc info there it will say how much Ram

I would also run a new belarc

Right click the MYCOMPUTER ICON on the desktop or in the start menu now choose properties your RAM amount will be reported there.

When your using 512MB of ram you need to be careful what programs you install and what Anti Virus program you use, stay away from the big Security Suites like Norton, McAfee even AVG has become bloated.

How is the computer running?

Zep, seems to be doing alright. I played one of my games and it seemed to be better. Why do you say no AVG? What do you recommend. I have had Norton and it seemed like it really bogged things down. Then I had McAfee for a year cause I got it free. Now, all 3 of my machines I have the AVG.

Ok as long as it's doing alright. I am not a fan of AVG anymore it has become somewhat bigger. If your running it and not having any problems lets leave it..
