Internet connection issues

I use "my favorites" to visit websites and on a few this has been showing up.

This program cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:

You are not connected to the Internet.

The website is encountering problems.

There might be a typing error in the address.

I cannot use Mozilla, The Weather Channel, my online banking or ebay. I have found that I can type in the URLs and ebay and the weather channel will come up even the online banking home page will show but when I log in the same page of "Navigation to the webpage was canceled." shows up. Has been going on about a week and a half now.

I use IE, AOL,occasionally Mozilla(But obviously not now) I'm on dial up. Is this a Bell South, AOL or some other kind of problem? Thanks!

So what happens when you try to use mozilla? Is it true you can not connect to any web site with Mozilla?

What version of IE is on the computer? IE7 0R 6.

and what operating system is on the computer, Vista or xp?

Is this an hp computer.

Usually the first step is to run a cleanning program such as ccleaner or ATF. Have you done any of that?

You of course tried a reboot of the computer..

Remember connection to online banking involves secure web sites (https) and sometimes problems can occur there.

Answer the questions please and we can go from there..

I would run ATF cleaner on all your browsers(select for each one you use).

Save it to your Desktop.

Run ATF Cleaner

* Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
* Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
* Click the Empty Selected button.
* Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
* Shutdown/restart the computer.

then run superantispyware to make sure you do not have malware interfering.
SUPERAntiSpyware
the blue is free, download, install, update it, run full scan, let it clean what it finds.

You're not alone, Penny. When Adelphia service was taken over by Time Warner, I had incredible problems, with no service for big parts of the day on a regular basis. My business depends on reliable internet connection for not only email, and internet access but to send and receive large drawing files. My phone service is also through the internet so when the cable goes down, I am dead in the water. (Nothing to do but go out and work in the garden.) I just moved over the last few weeks and thought I was going to be in trouble since there is no cable out in this remote part of the Adirondacks, but I was surprised that high-speed DSL was available and I find the connection speed to be acceptable, even for VOIP. And it hasn't gone down even once since I've been here. Of course, you can't watch Wheel Of Torture and other mindless TV junk over the DSL line. Wayne

Good information from raven and here's more to think about. Hi sportsman12, There could be a lot of things going on, sounds like it's limited to that computer though, since the other one connects. We should be trying 2 browsers too to see if it's browser related. Have you tried 2 different browsers Internet Explorer and another one like Firefox. Sometimes an Anti Virus or Firewall can cause issues, since that is a new router your firewall may not like it just yet. Restart the computer now keep hitting the F8 key. The computer should boot to the Windows Advanced Options Menu. Once you get there Black screen with white letters, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode With Networking hit enter now try again to connect to www.Google.com. See if it connects there. This mode runs without Anti Virus and firewall that's why we want to try it. Don't surf in this mode if it does connect here. Some laptops have a wireless switch on them. Does yours? There are 2 small computer Icons down by the clock, right click them and notice the options available in case you have not done that yet. Note any errors. Next we can look in the Device Manger for errors, and or reinstall the Wireless adapter and flush the DNS as that's what appears to be going on. Since you see a strong connection and unable to connect that points to a DNS issue and it's just a matter of flushing it and renewing it. We can get to that if needed.

yes first try this try putting a usb device in one of your usb ports, reboot, in fact reboot several times, on some computers that is the fix. If you have zonealarm firewall make sure you have the latest updated version for it, go in to the preferences and hit update. if not go to control panel, add remove programs and make sure at the top it is checked to show updates, then scroll down till you see the entry for service pack 3 SP3 and remove it. Do NOT do a system restore, if you have tried a system restore already let me know. Because if you did that then you have a combination of both on there. this is why I am still not suggesting putting sp3 on. I am seeing lots of problems still. Do you happen to have Norton on your pc? if so there is a specific topic on the problems with norton and sp3. Before you go spending money, let's try a few things. When you took your router to default, everything worked fine. When you use a pass phrase, you get to the internet but web sites don't load. I have a copy of your router manual in front of me so let's try a few steps. 1------Log onto your router 2------Under the wireless setup make sure the SSID reads NETGEAR 3------Make sure the operating channel for the wireless mode.is Auto. 4------ Leave the wireless mode set to the default setting of Up to 145Mbps for 2.4GHz. 5------ Select security options for the 2.4GHz wireless network.The wireless Security Options are set to None by default. 6-----use WPA2-PSK as your security option. 7----- enter the following as your passphrase wndr3400 make all letters lower case. Select APPLY at the bottom of the screen. Under DIAGNOSTICS, select the REBOOT option. Once the router reboots, close out all your screens and reboot you computer. When prompted for a passphrase enter wndr3400 all letters must be lower case. Please post back and let us know if that did the trick.

Thank you zep and ravencajun. I'm writing through a friend because now I can't log in to GW! Same old stupid thing of page had been cancelled, no connection blah blah.
What I did before writing in the first time was run disc clean, defragmentation, ad ware SE Personal and yes I had rebooted. Since then I have run the ATF cleaner, run the complete scan on superantispyware, unplugged every wire in the back of the tower, replugged.
Apprently IE is down also because I clicked on the e and got the same message of not being able to display this page. However this page did give me a place to click on diagnose. It said "Windows could not detect any wired or wireless network cards cards on your machine. If you are connecting to the Internet through a phone line using a dial up connection you will need to contact your ISP. Otherwise please make your your network card drivers are installed properly."
Why would they suddenly disappear? I don't think I deleted any programs.
Answers for zep:
Mozilla says page load error, Firefox can't find the server .The browser could not find the host server for the provided address.
IE sigh, I want to say I upgraded to 7 but don't know where I would find the info except on the now defunct IE page.
It is an elderly Dell computer, I have Windows XP.

If you connect to the web through dialup with AOL, maybe AOL's dialup adapter is corrupt and needs rebuilding. To do this, follow the instructions below:

To reinstall the AOL adapter:

1. Close the AOL software.
2. Right-click the AOL icon in your Windows system tray (at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, next to your PC's clock).
3. Select System Information.
4. Click the Utilities tab.
5. Click Rebuild/Uninstall AOL Adapter or click the Start button beside Rebuild AOL Adapter.
6. When the confirmation appears, click OK.

When you restart the AOL software, the AOL adapter will be reinstalled automatically.

this is sounding like you have lost your connection to the internet. You may have to go into your network settings and click on repair. I would try calling Bell south and see if they can check your line and see if they see problems. Is your phone working ok?

it also could be that your modem is malfunctioning or dead. Can you try another pc or laptop connected to your dial up and see if it works?

SYSTEM RESTORE took care of it, I went back about a week before I started having trouble and glory hallelujah the Mama bear has been reunited with her cub! Poor Papa bear can stop cringing now LOL!
