Single wall oven reliability vs Double Oven Reviews/Reliability

Been doing a lotta reseach on Double ovens for rhome410 as well as my own curiosity now.

You may have seen my posts about the Elux Double ovens,I found much the same results for the Mieles.

What are your experiences, or data that you have found?

Do you have an opinion or explanation as to why I consistently find more negative reviews for the double ovens than do I for Single Ovens?

circulation?? I don't really know, but we've been really happy with our two stacked single ovens. I love that if one goes on the fritz (no blips in 3 years of heavy baking and self clean cycles) we'll still have the other one to rely on.

I wish I really knew how to show pictures on gardenweb...why is it so tricky?, but I've posted a photo of my set up on the AJ madison review section.

risk is doubles have a single control board for both ovens so replacement would be pricey

John, 1)Did Smart money talk about resale value of the home? Real estate agents/money lenders love Wolf. It is the brand de rigueur for the nouveau riche poseur elite. If you are building your Kitchen to impress real estate agents,potential buyers,and friends then yes Wolf is best. 2)The previous generation Wolf oven had some reliabilty issues. To its credit Wolf hired an outside consultancy to do extreme testing of it's ovens to find weak spots. It completely redesigned some parts while leaving others alone. It has been about 3 years or so since the current generation came out and so far so good. However, both Gaggenau and Miele have long established records of excellent oven reliability. Wolf will "probably" be very good.Gaggenau and Miele you can take to the bank. Having said that there is always some chance you get a lemon,that is why they have warranties. 3)Before I purchsed my Gaggenau I sought friends and friends of friends who had high end kitchens. I live in West LA. My best friend lives in Yorba Linda in Orange County.I have one sister who lives in Anaheim Hills in Orange County and one sister who lives in the Palos Verdes section of LA County. I offered to cook a meal including beef wellington and chocolate souffle if they let me test their oven and monkey around in their kitchen. Checking things out like ranges and such. I found takers that had Thermador,Wolf,Miele, and Gaggenau. Could not find anyone with a Kuppersbusch. I got good results with them all.I eliminated Thermador when I researched and found reliability problems but I like the results in the order of my rankings. 1) Gaggenau 2) Miele 3) Wolf. All are on my recomment list because they are much better than the GE/Whirlpool/Viking ovens that I have previously used. And I really like the side-opening doors. It lets you get real close without fear of burning yourself.

I'm not "Breezygirl" alto I'm sure some folks here think I'm kind of a "Breezy guy"---well "Windy" anyway! But another vote for Electrolux. I've had their oven and speed oven over 6 years now. Both trouble free, performance is great, The oven is very quiet even the convection fan. It does not blow hot air into the kitchen, alto the air that it does blow is slightly above room temp, (at least in the Winter). The fully gliding out racks are just as smooth as they were when new, and we love the large display and easy to read controls (Wavetouch) that disappears if you don't hit any buttons for a couple of Mins. We have not had to remove the glass in the door to clean the inside glass, alto to be honest, except for turkeys and occasional ham, we do most of the "Messy stuff" outside, since we live in S Calif. The glass in the door is easily removed as is the whole door for that matter and it shows how to do it in the Operator's Manual, should you ever need to clean the "Inside glass"---compare this to a more expensive "Fancy oven" where you have to call for "factory authorized service" to clean the inside glass. I can Truthfully say, what we love this oven, just as much as the day it was first installed---(More that 6 years ago), now. Gary

For the ovens I second the recommendation of the bosch units. They are solidly built and have been very reliable. For the dishwasher, I also like the Bosch 800 series from a value stand point. That being said miele dishwashers are excellent but I recommend getting the step up model. The G4975SCVi has no added air drying system. The G6165SCVi which will be $300 more adds the Sensor drying system which helps dry. Or take one more step to the G6365SCVI for $100 more again and that has the auto open drying. It helps a lot. If you are going to spend $400 extra that's where I would put it.

Some companies discontinue parts after a certain amount of time has passed, though sometimes parts houses and large repair firms have some in their stocks. All the high end brands that I know of have self cleaning. Gaggenau, the ne plus ultra of high end, has 905° F pyrolosis and doesn't have a problem with their enamel. They don't make a 27" oven anymore, however. I think it's more the middle brands that have trouble keeping their prices down and still make a well functioning, high heat self clean. Some have self clean at 550°, which is supposed to work fine, but may need a little more work on the final hand cleaning. I wouldn't believe CR for ovens. Their standards are about what one can do in a laboratory, not how nicely an oven cooks. Some of the older GE's were well liked while others were awful. The current ones get mixed reviews. GE is an example of mid-level. Your biggest issue is going to be making a choice from the limited options available in 27". The new standard is 30", and the 27" ovens are made for retrofitting. So, to your question about used ovens: As with anything else, it's how much are you going to pay for it. Used microwaves aren't a good idea because the magnetron degrades with usage. I wouldn't pay more than $500 for a pristine, hardly used conventional oven that was more than two years old, no matter what the brand (mid to high end). If you're talking ten years old, I wouldn't pay more than $200. That's basically "renting" it and putting off the decision to buy a new oven, which could pay off and give you many years of happy use. If you do go with used, do yourself a favor and get an experienced and qualified technician to install it and check it out, to make sure it's really running right after being moved and all, and factor the price of that into your budget.

Maybe because there are 2 ovens in the 1 unit, so if there is any weakness or mistake, you have twice the opportunity to have a problem that someone with a single oven has? I would love to be able to stack 2 singles, so if one has a problem, there would still be another working unit. But that gets very expensive, since a single is usually at least 3/4 the price of a double.

My double oven just died after 14 years. Cannot fix it because I have to replace the "Brain" plus the self-cleaning lock and convection fan.

To replace the brain would cost about $400 for the part. I can probably fix it but after 14 years, I am better off getting that Gaggenau that you all talk about.

However, there is no doubt that two ovens would have been more reliable in my case. In my case, the damaged was caused by the self-cleaning function. The upper oven was used twice-daily while the lower level was used once a month.

But I cannot complain, I did get 14 years out of it!
