Alice is a senior.

She passed on having a studio do her senior photos. She thought all the studio portraits looked stiff and alike. So we spent a half hour taking a few shots. This is the one she chose to submit:

That was a very interesting post Patrick. I agree and disagree with it to an extent. With serious loss of our natural forests and large old trees as well as the rainforests, we are in desperate need of the large trees. They are the only thing standing between us and global warming right now. Without them it doesn't matter what we do to save the earth, it will still be lost. However, on the other hand, with property lots getting smaller and smaller and houses being built larger and larger, there is no room for these wonderful large trees with or without a rose garden. Hence more and more understory trees are being planted instead of the large shade trees if there are any planted at all. In my area, if you want to sell a house, especially right now, a large shade tree will sell the house, with or without the rose garden. Now, down to the nitty/gritty. I love roses too. Of all the plants in my garden the rose takes presedence. However, I'm fortunate enough to own a somewhat large lot and can also have those large trees. I realize there are few who might be as fortunate. I have 11 large shade trees ranging from beech to oak to maple to ash to fossil and a couple of others. I have almost a dozen understory trees such as dogwood, Japanese maple, cherry. I also have Vitex but use that as a large shrub. I also have a Japanese varigated willow that I keep as a shrub. Yet, I still have much room for my roses and keep right now, about 200 roses with more coming each year. My thoughts are that before planting a tree (they shouldn't be bought in a whim, EVER)each person should evaulate where the tree will be, what performance you want from it, i.e. shade, protection from wind and elements, wildlife, screening, etc., where the morning, afternoon and evening sun hits and where your flower beds are. All my roses are in full sun from dawn to dusk. Roses such as Gruss an Aachen, most of my polys anyway, seem to prefer a little shade in the middle of the afternoon. At least my Gruss an Aachen especially, hasn't performed nearly as well since I put it in full sun. It's also a very hot sun, with no shade or cooling of any kind. Most of my large trees don't shade the roses at all but they do provide a cooling of the air as it passes through them. The trees not only make the air feel better to me, but my roses seem to perform better when they are closer to the trees. It has to do with subclimates, I'm sure. I know the large shade trees are a problem for a lot of people. Most properties don't support them anymore and that's quite the shame of it. A lot of planning needs to go into the garden before one can be planted. In my garden, the closet two shade trees are 50 feet apart, with most of them closer to 80 feet apart. The sun hits my house and rose gardens in a way that even mature trees will not stop the sun from coming in. But they will cool the air and take the beating sun away. They will also provide a spot for me to escape the sun and provide food and shelter for the wildlife and the outside utilities of the house. I have visited some rose gardens that didn't have trees, where the roses sat in the beating sun. I honestly didn't enjoy it as much since, being fair skinned, the sun did such a number on me and there was no escape from it that I finally didn't enjoy the rose gardens. I want my roses, but I want my trees too. I guess I want Utopia.

Phylrae, It may be a good idea to add another rating to Watchdog. The negative ratings given have all been factual and not given in a mean spirited way. The more information available as to what Alice is doing may help someone determine that all is "NOT OK" with Alice. I don't know how much the police/social services checked on to find out Alice was "OK". It may have only been a phone call. I also don't know if they looked at the Watchdog link, which I provided. Philomena, The certified letter may be a good idea. If someone does actually stop by Alice's, they may see the letter. Two good things could come from it: you get your money back and/or it helps Alice get some help. Good luck to all. We may never know the outcome but I think we are all trying to make the situation better. I don't think Alice is trying to take anyone's money (my opinion, but I have been wrong before). John

Untraditional Thanksgivings ? We've Had a Few....

I don't think I can recall an 'untraditional' Thanksgiving actually. Pretty boring, huh? For as long as I can remember when I was growing up and until my grandparents passed away, we were at my paternal grandmother's house for T'giving. It was a big group with a bunch of aunts, uncles and cousins, all great cooks. Then my maternal grandparents retired and moved back to Alabama from Texas in the 70's so we were at their house or at my parents. We're talking some good, old-fashioned country cooks here (including my DM) who would have totally turned up their noses if someone had brought in something bought at a store. After my mother passed away, T'giving was either at my house or my brother's house (we rotated for a while) and then we pretty much picked it up because we had most of our kids and grandkids to host and my brother and SIL have no kids. But we have to share with the other sets of parents, so we truly mix it up from year to year. A few years ago I realized I was stressing way too much over the menu. We pretty much have the same basic things every year, lol. We all do try something new now and then and I don't do it all myself, as my kids and in-law kids bring dishes so it's really not bad. My guys even do the clean-up most of the time, so how lucky is that!

Alice is busy applying now. She sent off videos of her riding skills to recruiters/coaches at schools with NCAA equestrian teams. No news yet. Here is the list, though she didn't send videos to all of these schools. She had 8 favorites and I'm not sure which 8. She expects to graduate with a 4.2 gpa.

Yup, I'm a proud mommy. She is very much her own person and has done this on her own for herself. She is also a math wiz. Alice is FFA chapter president this year as well. And has a part-time job. Occasionally she sleeps.

Alice is gorgeous. 4.2 -- wow! I know you must be very proud of her. I vote for a Texas school....lol. Baylor and A&M are not that far from here (well in Texas terms, not far).

Wow! Stunning! AND smart! I've followed along over the years and am impressed by what a compassionate, intelligent, head-on-her-shoulders, young woman she has become. Good luck to her with her college aps! SMU (DH) and UGA (me) grads here...many moons ago, but we'd still vouch for them! Great photography, too!

One of my high school friends was an Olympic contender or medalist...I need to search out her email and find out where she went to school.
But wherever Alice goes....they will be damn lucky to have her!!!

I never post here, but I had to comment on your beautiful daughter and her outstanding accomplishments! Job well done!

As an aside, I was in your shoes this time last year with my daughter looking at about 15 schools. I just wanted to recommend a site called College Confidential, and I linked the parents forum below. You may have already used this site and know that some forums about specific schools are extremely competitive, etc. Although I never participated, we found out a lot of information regarding scholarships, financial aid, dorm stuff, etc. One sage parent wrote that if your child calls upset about something, give it 24 hours (if appropriate). She may have resolved the issue 5 minutes after hanging up, while you fretted the entire night:) One thing that never crossed my mind was to check out the infirmary availability.

Enjoy your time with Alice and the process. I'm happy for you both.

What a lovely and accomplished young lady! (And a beautiful picture Mom) You must be very proud --

I'd also like to pass along a few college-related tips and web sites that my son and I found very helpful when searching for the best college for him. (We seem to have found it!)

The one piece of advice we found most helpful (by far) was to actually go and visit the schools in question, because there's simply no better way to get a feel for the school and whether or not it's a good fit. Statistically, a campus visit is, by a wide margin, the most succesful predictor of student happiness at college.

Now with that particular list of schools, visiting all of them is clearly not a possibility. The geography alone... But you can visit some schools close to home plus perhaps a few that are relatively close together (Baylor, TCU & A&M) to narrow down what works and does not work for your daughter, then eliminate some and follow up on the ones that look best. (And by the way, why isn't UC Davis on your list?) Anyway -- some of the things we found that turned out to be very important to my son were size of student body, size of the campus, diversity of the student body, architecture and geography of the area, urban or rural location, religious/political/party atmosphere, Greek system. Essentially, you can find the 'type' of school that best fits your daughter (and narrow down your list) by visiting other schools of that type to see what her personal 'hot buttons' are.

Sure - academic programs and activities are important, but I could hardly imagine two schools that are more different than Texas A&M (huge, very conservative, fairly homogenous) and Brown (small, diverse and very liberal). Odds are, your duaghter would feel much more comfortable and do much better at one of those schools than at the other.

I didn't have much luck with College Confidential, but found the qualitative comments on Princeton Review to be very illustrative. I also really liked StudentsReview.com, and for narrowing down a list, MyPetersons.com.
