Finally found free 5-gallon drums for rain barrels
Comments (11)Time to hit the Sears cataglog, Black and Decker, or DeWalt tool listings. They all have what is called a Sawzall. A must tool. Either cord or cordless. Very usefull for cutting all kinds of things with metal or wood blades. Avoid China made, they don't last. I have three 55 gal drums that I think at one time had swimming pool chemicals in them. By the time I got them they had been emptied and it was several years ago and back then I rinsed them well and since have caught rainwater in them, added mosquito pellets and/or capped them and used the water when there is a lack of rain. Unless you are part gorilla I don't see how you could reach all the way down into a 55 gal container from the top but I would think if you have an open area far from plants etc, you could fill them and then siphon off the diluted chemical. Or lay them on their side and run a hose into them. They have a screw cap on top, don't they?My guess would be that you have diluted the chemical enough to be ok. Of course I'm from the old school where you did what you had to, not what was always politically or environmentally correct. One of my three containers had the top completely cut off and I catch garage runoff in it. I cut a small hole near the bottom and screwed in a small tap that I can turn on/off to let the water out. Gets a little scummy if I leave it too long but we get regular rain so I don't have to leave water in it too long....See MoreNeed 55 gallon plastic drum for compost bin
Comments (11)Junk mail, not to change your mind about the type of compost bin you are contemplating but have you looked at the problems of having such a bin. First of all, it will be a heavy brute wont it....soil and water, water and soil, grass clippings and so on...that'll be some weight to deal with. Then it will be one bin...and as the contents percolate, and finally come to something useful, it will be mixed with the new add-ins...so that has to be separated. Where to put then the good stuff --from the bad. Then there's the problem of getting the contents turned over...that's a must if you expect good decomposing. And it has to be given water...water has weight.. Is the thing going to be rolled around in an attempt to mix the contents....then ask some brawny man to lift it... better get insurance. There will have to be an opening in the bottom to extract some cuz you wont be able to do that outta the top. Try using a spade in a garbage can in an attempt to lift something out...as in soil. Cant be done, there's no room unless the bin is put at an angle--like a cement mixer, that's one way to mix the contents and be able to lift out some of the contents. If you can instead make a bin--two's better/3's best out of old wood/chicken wire....there's directions for making one all over the net. Then you have a better way to separate and use. A 55-gallon drum might be considered for a rain-barrel--lots of soft water for plants....See More55 gallon barrels
Comments (2)I get plastic 55 gallon drums and 5 gallon buckets from the carwash free. I was however wondering if they can hold up to a hard freeze with water in them. I'm usually out of rain water by fall though so haven't had to worry about it so far. I've seen smaller steel drums full of water burst from a hard freeze. I would think the plastic would flex more but maybe not when cold or brittle from age and UV exposure....See MoreSource for free 55 gallon drum?
Comments (7)Try contacting Coca Cola ombudsman. Coca Cola recycles their plastic drums, but do sell some and provide some free for community events. I have bought some from them quite cheaply a couple of years back. Another source would be pickle packaging plants. The last barrels I got were black, came from India, filled w/ pickles. I got mine from a gentleman that re-sells them through Craigslist for $20 each. Good luck!...See MoreMary Broughton Stadter
