epoxy grout with carrara = no? Bill? Anyone?
Comments (1)It's not that the color will bleed. It's that the oils from the epoxy can get into the edges of the stone, giving it a bit of a "halo", or "picture frame" appearance. If you look down the list of topics, you'll see another thread about someone asking about grout color with carrara, and I posted pics of a carrara job I did using silver shadow grout, but in Permacolor, instead of epoxy. There really shouldn't be a need for epoxy with marble....See MoreEpoxy grout with Calacatta marble?
Comments (10)Quite frankly, I don't care WHAT they say about marble and sanded grout. I'll go back to my usual mantra-- there is only ONE factor that determines whether you use sanded or unsanded grout, and that's the size of the grout joint. That said, I've heard the whole thing about scratching polished stone by using sanded grout. I've done aisles at Lord and Taylor using crema marfil-- one of the softer stones around-- and we always used a 3/16" grout joint, which means without a doubt, sanded grout. When we'd clean it up, insted of using sponges, we'd use an old fashioned method of dry (sanded) grout and burlap, rubbed into the face of the stone, which completely fills the joints, and cleans excess grout off the face. it gets better. not only did with rub the sanded grout into the face of this stone with an abraisive cloth, but we used a BUFFING MACHINE to do it!! The heck with that scratching stuff. Someone would have to be TRYING to scratch the face of marble, as far as I'm concerned. One other thing to think about is using Laticrete's Permacolor grout. The sand in it's alot finer than most grouts-- to the point that you can use it in ANY size grout joint. I know I've personally used it with polished carrara marble, and didn't have a single problem. Because the epoxy matrix is amber in color, it tends to add a slight yellowish hue to the finished grout. Not it's not so noticeable when the tile is a different color, but when used with a white tile, it tends to stand out. I'm going after the same look as the OP - white porcelian "marble look-a-like" with white-ish grout. But am debating if the extra $750 upcharge is worth it for the Spectralock epoxy. Now that I found this quote from Bill_V, am concern the blending of white-ish grout + epoxy may make that upcharge even more of a ridiculous proposition. Comments (3)white marble is a tough repair. I've had my best success taking a bit of the material, crushing it, and using the crushed material as the coloring agent with a truly clear epoxy. I emphasize "clear" because many supposedly clear epoxies get a yellow tint once cured which is very noticable on the white counter. A good fabricator or stone restoration guy should be able to do a nice repair for you. Same person could probably bring the polish back on your etched areas assuming your stone is polished and not honed....See Moreenduring
