Sad pet owner here.....

It was inevitable, my little mini poodle, Andy, had to be put down recently. He would have been 16 years old in January and had been in decline since November of 2012. For many years he enjoyed excellent health and had the energy of a "puppy" long after he left puppyhood. Andy was a great little companion to me and loved attention from anyone around. I will miss him, but I am comforted by the thought that I gave him good care, including making his food in my pressure cooker, and that he had a good life with me.

I'm so sorry Teresa that you lost Andy. So very hard. We always wish our animals to have long lives, but it sure is hard to lose them after such a long time. Just glad you know what a wonderful life you gave him.

We lost our Mommy cat Monday so I'm sad right along with you. Be good to yourself.

Aw, Theresa, I'm so sorry. Sounds like you were a very good mom to Andy, so he was a lucky boy. Sixteen years was a long time, even for a little dog. I know you must miss him. Our pets become so central to our lives and that becomes even more clear once they are gone. Sending hugs to you.

Coconut, I'm also sorry to hear about your Mommy cat. I cried like a baby when I had my Sheena put down, several years ago. It's just such a heartbreak.

Crazy funny. With 7 cats & 4 dogs we've got plenty of experience with this kind of stuff...just never in the washer itself. One of my cats has done it ON the washer tho. Funniest story I have is the time DSIL had been napping on the sofa and one of his dogs got sick in his open mouth. Every time I think I'm having a bad day I think of Kyle with a mouth full of chihuahua vomit and so somehow my day just isn't so bad anymore.

"lukkirish, what you say may be partially true, but....by now the breed has been so badly over bred for violence, and there's the 'lion tamer' mentality that the owner can fix or control the propensity to violence in these bully breeds, that it's a very unsafe breed." I understand fully that the breed is dangerous, my point is that we should be looking at a bigger picture here. Why are they dangerous? Because of the terrible breeding practices done by breeders. Again, it's just my opinion but these animals are only doing what they've been bred to do, "by us" (as in humans) and as a society we need to take responsibility for that and find a solution that goes beyond just destroying these dogs. First we inbreed them to be naturally aggressive and then we expect them to ignore that same natural tendency we're guilty of in breeding into them. Breeders and owners who unwisely believe they can retrain this animal to be a family pet are really the ones responsible for their maiming people or other animals. Why owners? Because they knowingly put them in a situation that is impossible for the this breed to contend with. Again it's just my opinion but just as there are laws about housing wild animals that are knowingly dangerous, these animals deserve the same care and protection. We keep breeding and then destroying them. It doesn't make sense to me. I'm not arguing with the fact that they don't make a good family pet at all. What I'm saying is we blame them when the way I see it, they are innocent. They absolutely require a special environment but in my opinion, it's the breeders and pet owners who are really at fault for all the destruction and harm these animals have caused, not the dogs themselves. And while we are busy destroying these dogs, we are turning a blind eye to the breeders who are the source of the problem to begin with. We should put some focus on who is really at fault and their poor breeding tactics.

Boy, you are singing my song!!! I had a neighbor with a wonderful black lab. A real family dog, and they had a family full of kids but noooooo they preferred to keep him locked up in a chain link kennel in the backyard where he could see them when they came home or through the glass sliding door when they were home but ignoring him. He cried all the time, day and night. It was horrible. The wife once explained to me that the dog farted too much to be inside with them. I was speechless. The icing on the cake was when she started giving me advice on my apparently in perfect health dog that is socialized and well behaved, telling me about changes in diet I needed to consider (even though my dog doesn't have an ounce of fat on her). She must have grasped my displeasure so she told me very proudly that she worked at Petsmart and that her entire family volunteers at the local shelter and that they foster cats (had a house full of them). There was nothing I could say that would convince her that she knew nothing about caring for an animal. Not even that I spent 18 years working at a zoo. I was so glad when they moved away.

boxerpups - I am so sorry for your loss. Pets are family and provide so much love and affection that is unspoken and unconditional. We lost our beloved lab of nearly 10 years this April just shy of his 10th birthday. He developed a splenic tumor and was very sick. We opted to operate b/c the other choice was to put him down or let the tumor eventually explode (which it was close to at the time). We knew the chances of it being a cancerous tumor were very high but we wanted to give him every chance he could at life and there was a small chance it was non cancerous which gave us hope. We operated and he had a rough time recovering b/c of the size of the tumor and b/c his heart had been so stressed due to the tumor. We checked him out of the hospital against medical advice after nearly a week in the vet hospital b/c he wasn't eating on his own or really perking up if we weren't there. We brought him home and he was never happier to be home, went out in the yard, went upstairs (even though he wasn't supposed to - he always slept upstairs next to my side of the bed), snuggled with all of us and ATE! We thought he was going to be okay, drs were amazed he responded so well to being home. Well he passed away the next morning. :( Sometimes pets need the extra time with their owners as much has we need the extra time with them. Our dog NEEDED to come home and one extra night with us, check out the yard, go all over the house and make sure all of us were okay too. Turns out his tumor was not cancerous after all. We are glad we operated and glad we got one more night. So just because YOU needed the time, don't think your beloved pet didn't need the extra time too to say goodbye and spend with you and your family.

Oh Teresa, I'm so sorry to hear about Andy, you've mentioned him just often enough that I seemed to "know" him. Even 16 years isn't really long enough, but he sure lived a long, happy and healthy life with you.

Coconut, I'm sorry about Mommy Cat too. It's been nearly 3 months since I lost Cooper and I still cry when I think about him.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words. I'm not much of an overly sentimental person when it comes to pets, but Andy was my puppy and all mine, in that I didn't share him with kids/family, for all those years. It just feels odd not having another creature in the house to look for, listen out for, feed, walk, etc. But, each day I feel like I have adjusted just a little bit more. It will take some time, I know.

I slobber all over pets...yours, mine, anyone's, so I am heartbroken to hear about Andy and Mommy Cat!!

It's been a very long time since we had to put down our Chowder Mae (Chow) but I still miss her.

So sorry to hear about this Teresa, you brought back memories of my Roxie, she lived a long time also. If I think really hard, I can recall her smellÃ¢ÂÂ¦Ã¢ÂÂ¦ I wish you strength and courage and time to heal from this pain.

Awwww...it's always hard to lose our critters. So sorry Teresa and Coconut. We know when we bring them into our families that they will have shorter lives than us, but still...

Teresa, I know what you mean about 'all mine'. Looking at my 15/16 yr old Siamese mongrel cat. He was shot in the back of the head about the time I had surgery for breast cancer. We recovered together in my recliner. He has a crooked jaw and is missing some teeth, but he waits for me in the carport every night and snorfles all over me as soon as I sit down in 'our' chair. Not looking forward to the day that I know is coming, but like you, I'll take comfort in the life we were able to give him.

So sorry to hear of Andy's and Mommy cat's passing over the Rainbow Bridge, teresa and coconut. Losing a beloved pet is so hard, they're like family members. Hugs to you both.

Teresa, I hope you're starting to feel a little bit better. It takes time and you had Andy for so long. The small things get to you. We were eating pie the other night with whipped cream and Mommy always came and got a little taste. We looked at each other and the lips started trembling with tears soon following. Been thinking of you.

Thanks everyone for the sympathy. I didn't mean to co-opt Teresa's post, but it was so fresh on my mind and well.. only a month and half earlier we lost her youngest daughter Misty. Sudden heart problems, that took her within 3 days. That is what took Mommy too. We also lost my beloved Sammie cat [12]less than a year earlier, so it was 3 cats in a year. Sammie was my little liver shunt cat. After having a rough start as a kitten he did great until the last couple of years, then he developed hyperthyroidism and while he maintained for a long time, eventually he developed complications, was tired of the fight and we let him go. I say all of this to explain a bit more why I shoved myself into the conversation.

I really do appreciate all the good thoughts and energy. Yes, we consider the animals as our family too.

Thanks, coconut, I am feeling better, but I still catch myself listening out for him or thinking I've got to hurry home after work some days. Pet commercials kind of get to me because I don't have a reason to watch them - which is silly, I know. I am getting more sleep though, which is a good thing.
