I am in the same boat!! Drew applied and was hired some 3 weeks ago at my place! He did orientation last Sat and worked his first shift yesterday.
I did the same "mom" check on him too!!

Since he is only 15 he can only work a very limited amount of hours. 3 hours on school night and HAS to be done by 7pm.
4 hours on weekends and has to be done by 10pm.

That will all change in a few weeks when he turns 16 and can work till midnight!!

I got a call last night from a co worker who said he did great-very well mannered and kind. So PROUD!!

He is counting down to Friday when he gets his first paycheck which of course I say he can splurge on whatever he wants-after that he has to bank 75% of it!!

I'm jealous..I so want my kid working!!!!!!!!! He's applied twice to Albertsons...and refuses to go in and inquire about the job in person. (applied once online and once at their job kiosk)..he's got friends who've applied and got calls for interviews..I keep telling him they are afraid to say his name wrong so won't call him..he's got to go in. He's also applied at Wendy's..again no follow up and they've not called.
He has this thing about the "follow up" call..He'd do the job just fine and is a great worker..he just doesn't like the initial face to face contact.
He's even got real job experience.

Oh, you are taking me back when my sons got their first jobs. The plder one got a job at the A&P, back in the days when there was window so you could see into the meat area. I'd see him in there wrapping hamburger in plastic. I generally tried not to shop when he was working. He was still in high school.

#2's first job was a work study job in the Alumni Relations office of his university. I went to visit once and his main duty was to run mail through the postage machine. His "office" was formerly a bathroom. The women who worked there were so nice to him.

So congrats to your young sons. The first job of many. Terri, I agree that he has to go back in or call. Sometimes when they can see who they're getting helps alot --presuming he doesn't have piercings all over, but who knows, maybe someone would like that.

That sounds like a wonderful and stimulating job just right for a young man Eileen.
Good training for him being a cashier too and his clothes selection is perfect for the job.

Terri, your son has a case of shyness, mine too. Yes, he needs to go in or follow up with a phone call so they can see the handsome wholesome fellow in person. If his name is difficult to decipher maybe he can include a pronunciation guide parenthetically. My maiden name wasn't hard but everyone got it wrong. Meinhart (mine-heart) Something like that, maybe.

Sharon I SO wanted to take a photo of my handsome son in his "fancy" clothes, as he puts it. I decided it might be over the top after the fingernail inspection and gum extraction. ;) Thankfully neither of my children are inclined to piercings or tattoos. Daniel loathes pain. Alice begged for months for a navel piercing. I finally relented after 6 months. It still gives me the willies! I wrote a tongue-in-cheek essay about the experience.

Advanced Parenting

My 15 year old daughter has been pestering me for months to let her get her navel pierced. When it first came up my response was cautionary: I Googled infected pierced navel images to share. "Come here, Alice, look at this gooey one!" "Ew!" I thought it might be a passing notion and best to wait a while and see if she was still hot for a bellybutton ring in a few months.

Her best friend, Kaitlyn wants one, too. My thought was that this was a good best friend tandem activity. But her mom is firmly opposed. I called the other mom to discuss letting the girls go together. Nope. Odd, because her older daughter has a pierced nostril. I'm still scratching my head at that double standard.

Every few days the subject comes up. "Mom, can I get my bellybutton pierced?" "Sure, honey, when Kaitlyn's mom says she can..." "Mom!"

In truth, I'm not all that bothered by the navel ring thing. I'm far more opposed to facial piercing. I'm not concerned about what other people do but I believe my daughter's face is perfection just the way it is.

I knew eventually she would wear me down. I wanted her to be certain of the decision. It happened yesterday. We went for a walk together and passed the downtown tattoo/smoke/body piercing joint which was surprisingly open on Sunday. With mock hope she pointed out the store, "Look, Mom, they're open! I can get my bellybutton pierced!" To her astonishment I said, "Okay, go in and see what it costs." My stunned child jumped on the opportunity and in we went. The cost was within reach of the cash in my pocket. The clerk/piercing dude thought we were doing it together. Uh, no. My wobbly post natal navel shall remain intact. Ouchie. I remarked that a search party would have to be sent to recover it first.

Thirty bucks, a wince, and a few drops of blood later my kid admired her bejeweled umbilicus in the full length mirror. "Oh, it's so pretty!"

As I reflected later on this odd mother-daughter bonding moment I realized that after a fashion we paid homage to our connection. This bit of midriff sparkle adorns the point at which we were once joined. Aw, gee.

Barnmom that sounds so much like my granddaughter when she started getting those piercings. She went Goth for a while ....only wore black....had black hair and a couple of piercings on her face somewhere. She even had a best friend called Kaitlyn! We all despaired. But thank heavens when she started going to college in Europe she discovered that piercings just weren't in fashion there and neither was Goth. She is now a beautiful 24 year old...all piercings gone, hair back to its natural dark auburn and in a couple more years at university will be finishing her courses as a high school art teacher. Sigh! So they do grow out of it and become the way we had hoped to see them. :-)

I get phone calls all the time from young folks who simply ask for the "Hiring Manager". Now we don't have a hiring manager so put them thru to who ever is in charge at the time. Its cute the way some will stumble over their words.
I tell them to relax, take a deep breath, speak clearly and be honest...seems to calm them down LOL.
I put all calls thru-even the kids who are, shall we say, a little rough around the edges...I figure they could be a diamond in the rough if given the chance!!

My store is hiring for the holidays...baggers-lot attendants-greeters. The ones who do well stay after the holidays.

Have him apply again and follow up with a phone callabout 3 days later.

My older son had a pierced ear many years ago and has a tattoo of a dolphin on the back of his left shoulder, which has faded. Now it kind of looks like a black and blue mark leaping out of water.

My youngest niece had a collection of earrings going around one ear but now she's a mom with two daughters and the earrings are long gone, except the traditional one in the lobe.

To each his or her own, I guess.

Thanks everyone..I just picked him up from school. He hurt his neck in basketball/weight training this morning..can barely move his head. I've given him some pain relief, rubbed him down with Bio Freeze and he's texting on the couch..hmmm that means he's texting other teens AT SCHOOL! naughty kid! ~stop that~

He has his ears pierced. He doesn't always have his earrings in. But they have two guys that work in the deli at Albertsons, covered in Tatoos and piercings..so that's not an issue, I don't think.

I'll have him reapply while he's home today, and then he can MAKE sure he follows up this time.

good luck to Daniel, Barnmom, working at Barnes and Noble would have been a dream job for me! I started out at 14 at a sub joint right next to the college in Big Rapids, I hated it but worked there all through high school because most people don't want to hire 14 year olds!

Ashley started working at 14 too, as a dishwasher at a local inn and Amanda got a job at 14 working in a local day care. They were more excited than I was, LOL.

As for piercings, Amanda had her naval pierced when she was 18, but it was long gone by the time she turned 21. Ashley has her naval pierced, her nose pierced and a small tattoo of a dove on her ankle. Why? Beats me, but all are small and unobtrusive although I complained loudly about them all, LOL.

Thanks, Annie. Poor kid has his first shift tonight from 7-11 and has been sick with the flu for a few days. He seems to be over the worst of it and I'm trying to prop him up with OTC meds so that he can make it through those 4 hours. I think it would look really bad to call in sick for your first shift, he thinks so, too. At least it's only 4 hours... the store is just a few blocks from home so I'm going to wander over and see how he's doing. :)

So how did it go? I agree that working in a bookstore would be wonderful, although I imagine they don't encourage you to sit around reading.

Hope he was feeling well enough to make it through.

Poor Daniel, I'm hoping he made it through that shift too, although most B&N has that Starbucks Coffee counter and the smell would probably make me barf if I were already "under the weather".

Dedtired, I suppose he wouldn't get to sit around reading but just being in the bookstore would be wonderful. The downside would be that I would spend ALL my paycheck on books. Sigh. No willpower when it comes to books....

Daniel made it through the shift and learned to run the register. He did admit it was hard to stay focused since he felt so rotten. There was a book fair and it was very busy. He has his next shift next weekend. Not exactly a huge time commitment! I'm hoping he gets more hours closer to December.
