Ventilation hood for Blue Star Platinum 36" cooktop

Hello,

We are having our house constructed, so there are no physical limitations to installing our ventilation hood.

We are getting the Blue Star Platinum Rangetop 36". We will use the grill. So, I know I need a 42" wide, 27" deep ventilation hood with ideally 900 cfm or more.

If you could set up your dream ventilation hood for this Blue Star cooktop with grill, what would it be so that you can minimize noise?

I currently have a Prestige hood for my Blue Star RNB 36" and it's so loud. I only use the lowest setting and it's still so loud that I tend to avoid turning it on at all unless absolutely necessary.

I like the baffle filters and the ease of cleaning.

I've read that installing a roof-mounted blower or remote in-line blower and an in-line silencer on 10-inch ducting is the way to go.

I would appreciate thoughts on this and specifics as to brand names, etc. so I have something to give to the builder and presumably, he'll have someone on staff who will understand.

Thanks in advance for helping me decipher this challenging topic of ventilation hood selection and installation.

Roof mounted blower with the fantech inline silencer is often recommended on the forum.

I guess I should ask what is the difference betw. the roof mounted blower and the remote in-line blower in terms of noise, installation ease, and maintenance.

Would certain situations make one more preferable to the other?

People get crazy with ventilation. The Bluestar hood has teepeed style baffle filters which means it is drawing from both front and back creating a extended capture area. You can choose between 600 or 1200 cfm and they can be top or rear vented. Here is where the problems come in are you getting a grill (BBQ) on the range, how far and how many turns will be in your duct run, can you use 10" duct if not what size duct can you use.

Trevor's point is well taken and sounds like he's got great suggestions for much improved ventilation at modest extra cost. But...to restate, a liner that is narrower than the range, and only 15'' deep is way short of adequate. Trevor and ya think point out that the hood surround itself can function as the actual capture area, with the liner acting more as the conduit out for the smoke. That's only partially true. First, realize that the vertical walls of the hood liner will create "dead spaces" inside the hood surround but outside the walls of the liner. For these areas to be vented out, smoke would have to be drawn first downwards to clear the bottom of the liner, then back up through the duct. Since smoke etc naturally want to rise, that's asking a lot and I think you'll find stagnant air and fumes in those areas. More importantly, the area inside the surround not covered by the liner will have no baffles or filters to collect grease. The result is over time there will be a truly yucky buildup of grease and nastiness in the areas of the hood surround not covered by the liner. These will be next to impossible to reach to clean, and if it's a wood liner, it will never come fully clean anyway. Bleah! I'll say it again: if you are going to do a custom hood surround, far and away the best option is to get a custom hood liner that will fit as close to flush with the surround as is possible. I'd also insist on a surround that is at least 24'' deep, as 15'' is just too shallow to be effective. Several companies dedicated to hood production can do exactly that, it's what we did with Modern Aire and is I think the optimal solution.

With hoods, it's always best to get the highest cfm rate you can afford. As to the cooktop itself, people who have it complain about its difficulty to keep clean. I'd recommend getting the 36" rangetop which is just like the top of the 36" full range. I have the full range and cleaning the top is a breeze.

This photo was before we moved in so please forgive the sterile look of the kitchen. It's just the 2 of us now and since we recently downsized we purchased new appliances. We opted for the 30" Platinum, a 1200 CFM Prizer hood, a 30" Thermador Pro wall oven and microwave. I agree about the 'quick minute' - it's silly to have to also hit start. We love the BlueStar and the 25,000 BTU burner is the one I use the most. We did have to adjust the simmer burner to get it low enough but that was fairly easy. We haven't used the griddle or grill - maybe if we were cooking for more guests we would. DH loves the 25,000 for his wok and for heating up our small Lodge cast iron grill to sear steaks. I've baked in both the Thermador and BlueStar and even though one is electric and the other gas - they both maintain temperature settings. I also appreciate the open burners for ease of clean up.

I think the selection could be determined by ease of access for repair. Will your inline remote blower be in an accessible space for repair? Would your roof mounted blower be easily accessible? I have not had a remote or inline blower but I would assume that where ever the inline blower is located, there will be some noise associated with the rooms attached to that space while the blower is being used.

The typical difference is that roof mounted blowers for residences are centrifugal designs intended to have a low height profile. They are otherwise fairly large; my Wolf (Broan) 1500 cfm unit is I think about 16 x 20 inches. If height doesn't matter, a better choice is an up-blast style like commercial kitchens typically use, sized on the low end of the scale. I think that they can be quieter than the centrifugal units for the same flow rate.

Axial fans used in line can be made any size necessary, but typically are sized for the duct interface size and the desired flow rate. In principle, they have many blade design options that can trade among flow rate and noise. I don't have one so I can't comment specifically. They are heavy and will need to be supported from below or suspended from rafters.

The silencer must be installed between the blower (of whichever type) and the hood. I have a Fantech silencer for my 10-inch ducting. It is very large. The silencer will remove high frequency components of noise from upstream -- blade tip turbulence noise and duct turbulence noise. It won't affect baffle turbulence noise or lower duct turbulence noise or duct to hood transition turbulence noise, but all of these should be tolerable at the highest flow rate setting.

I can converse over my hood noise at full flow rate, and the noise, while different, is not perceptibly louder than wok sizzle.
