Best virus protection.

My laptop is new and my 90 day "free" McAfee has run out. I need to purchase protection but I am confused by something I recently read; it said McAfee isn't good with Vista. Is there any truth in this idea?

McAfee has terrible virus detection and Norton is a giant resource hog.
I use Nod32 Anti-Virus for Vista. It is an extremely effective AV solution and the program takes an incredibly low amount of system resources.
Grisoft AVG and Avast are also good AV programs.

Then there are people who think the best virus protection for Vista would be Windows Live Onecare.

There are also a lot of Kaspersky Anti-Virus fans on the internet that swear by it.

A complete Internet Security Suite may be the way to go, which would include anti-virus, anti-spyware, & firewall, since you're going to need all three to be protected nowadays.

If there was one best, everybody would be using it.

I have been using Grisoft AVG for a long time and really like it. I tried Norton and was not satisfied with it.

Why don't you try MS Security Essentials? I started using it because of false positives with Avast. I have had it for couple of years and I have not had one problem with it. All I had to do to set it up was install and change the schedule for auto scans. I turn my PC off at night and it was set to scan during the night.

you are right they want to be able to sell you their protection my guess it would be McAfee or Norton based which are much more resource hogs than the free MSE or Avast. any type of good AV program can slow you down some, depends on the program some are much worse than others. Any program that runs real time uses resources that is how it works period.

The plain one is free if you go for the pro version you get a trial period only if you don't want to pay stay away from the pro button. Here's a good article with information ation and instructions. But you can certainly get the programs from their own websites just be very watchful of each step so you can uncheck any of those unwanted items like toolbars. I'm a Windows Live One Care user. Life is simple. It's Virus/Adware/Firewall/BackUp/Maintance/etc ... automatic everything. Works for me!

Annual Subscrition about $45, when on sale and at auctions around $25, and is good for three computers.

Chevy, Ford, foreign or domestic. When this issue comes up everyone has an opinion. Like Randy said, " If there was one best,everyone would be using it".

For what it is worth, my new Vista system had Norton Symantec and it created all sorts of problems. As a result I uninstalled it and installed AVG. AVG works fine and I have not had one concern with it. Being free it makes the conversion even sweeter.

Another good free one to consider is Avast! I've been using it for almost 2 years on my XP computers. A couple of months ago it caught two different Trojans on my laptop and took care of them. It is compatible with Vista.

Currently using AVG, Avast and Comodo anti virus. All free version - and all on different computers of course. Very happy with all of them.

Windows One Care will charge you 29.00 a year after one year to up date your virus, and ad-ware portions of the program. That is why I quit using it. I will use it only open a backup disc I made to retrieve some information and then I will uninstall it from my computer.

I have Norton Internet Security 2007.....and like it very much. In the past ten years I always have used Norton and have never had a problem and found that it is not a hog. I bought Norton 2007 in Costco for $39.00 with a $20.00 rebate at the register....it only cost me 19.00 for Norton 2007. I just updated my computer last week.

A lot people only look at antivirus protection and for get spyware/malware threats. If you want a free program for both try CyberDefender. It is probably the best out there.
Another program to supplement that would be WinCleaner Antispyware.

I bought Defender Pro 1 in 5. Very disappointed in it. Hard to install for normal people. 10.00 for tech support, and I've been having problems since! Wish I'd have gotten my norton. At least theres a booklet and tech support! Gladys

Was that CyberDefender? I have had no problems but things happen. I probably could find 10 posts to 1 against Norton though. Too many bad reviews would scare me away from Norton. A better link to WinCleaner Antispyware would be:
