distance between upper cabs and base cabs
Comments (23)ni 2006 -- as to your question about whether cabinets come with the light rail: It depends on who is making your cabinets. For many cabinet companies, it is an option. My advise to you is to make sure you resolve that issue as you are designing your kitchen and cabinets, and not afterward, like we did. While we love our finished kitchen, our cabinet maker messed up and didn't account for our undercabinet lighting, which was mentioned in our contract and everything. The electrician installed the lighting like he was supposed to, but we are still fighting with the cabinet maker to install a rail to hide the lighting. We just want a simple inch-and-a-quarter plain rail around the bottom of the cabinets to hide the lights (that's how much they show). We may end up doing it ourselves. Our cabinets are 18 inches above our counter, so an inch and a quarter won't be so much to take away from that, although I would have preferred that it would be that much space after the light rail. It was one of a million details in our house remodel that I didn't pay enough attention to, and now here we are, but I think it's going to be okay. So bottom line is, decide on that now, before it is too late and you are left with few choices. Make sure everyone is on board: cabinet maker/company, electrician, etc....See MoreRaised counter heights for tall cooks?
Comments (48)I am 6'1" and had a custom kitchen built with 42" high finished counter heights in all kitchen areas. This height was preferred by my Mother-in-Law as well and she was only 5'2" but said that she could work longer at the counter without back and shoulder fatigue. Cabinet makers need to wake up and start offering STANDARD base cabinets in taller heights. It may not fit an 8' ceiling room and look uniform, BUT 8' ceilings are a thing of the past really too. 9' is becoming the new standard. My kitchen had 12' ceilings and the tall lowers and then tall uppers made it look VERY GRAND. I believe as long as your ceiling height is more than 8' in the cabinet space, anyone would prefer a higher counter height, if they stood at it and worked for even a few minutes! To me it would add value in any space for anyone over 5'2"!...See Morewhat color to paint old kitchen cabs
Comments (28)A GOOD paint job, using QUALITY products will not chip that easily. Like I said earlier, I painted a BR vanity about 5 years ago - not a scratch or chip one. It was a challenge for me to paint that vanity as professionally as I knew how (did lots of research) just so I could say I could do it and also to practice for my kitchen cabinets. I went into it knowing I could buy a NEW vanity if I wanted to. I know a BR vanity does not get the wear and tear that kitchen cabinets, but still. My DD painted her kitchen cabinets right after I painted the vanity (it was their inspiration) and she does not have any chipping paint anywhere. They were ugly, cheap, pickled oak; she felt like she had nothing to lose; they are beautiful now....See MoreOld World vs. Classic Kitchen--trying to figure out what I want
Comments (60)I used to get the magazine "Cottage Living" and loved to see what people did with smaller spaces. I loved the look of the charming and carefully done houses. Our house is not small as in cottage-like, but it is also not a mansion. I think seeing what can be done in a smaller space helps when designing for not so small. Your house is not small, but the look is more of a charming one that an exotic style. If you embrace how nice it is and what it can be, you will have a lovely place to live. When I was younger, I always wanted to be glamorous, but could never pull it off. I looked like the girl next door and wished I could be more grown up looking. Now, many enough years later, I am grateful that I look young(-ish) for my age and had never been at a loss for suitors before getting married, so I wish I could tell the young version of me to be grateful because if one is wishing for something else, they miss what they do have. I still can't wear red lipstick, but am ok with that now that I am wiser, lol. I subscribed to Cottage Living for the decor and appreciated the smaller scale once I started to read it. I also love the aesthetic of what were mostly charming homes and the variety of what could be done while also keeping their appeal. The nicer ones were not mini versions of big houses, but were their own proud more modest size. It was my one foray into house porn, so I can't recommend many others, lol. It is out of print now, but you may be able to see back issues at the library or if someone is getting rid of them such as on freecycle or CL. I finally parted with mine last year or I'd send them along happily. I tried their old website that was up past the magazine going under, but it directed me to another site, which looked cute too. Apartment Therapy may give you some ideas. You will have a larger amount of space to work with, but the feel may not be far off from what would work for you. My kitchen is fairly large now and yet it was done in a modest way for the decor. Its look fits with the overall scale of the house. If we had done fancy, there would have been a disconnect with the rest of the house no matter how much we updated it all. If you have seen a woman who is wafer thin where all the bones in her neck and ribs are protruding, and she is sporting double Es or more, you know what I mean. More is not always better....See Moreleahcate
