Which Firefox version for Windows 7

All my computers until now have had Windows XP. Yesterday my work laptop bit the dust, so I bought a new one today. Dell 1440 - 4GB Ram, i3, Windows home premium 64 bit.

Tomorrow I will start setting up the computer. Which version of Firefox should I use? I've been using version 3.6.20 - and I've been happy with it. I seem to recall a while back that someone was having trouble with Firefox 5 - and it was suggested that FF5 is really meant to run with newer operating systems - and may not work so well with XP. So I left well enough alone. Now that I'll have Windows 7, which FF is best? Should I stick with 3.6.20 - or get something newer. (By the way, I hated FF4 - messed up my toolbars - and one of my favorite addons - smart bookmarks - was not compatible with FF4. Don't think it works with FF5 either - and there doesn't seem to be a good equivalent addon.)

I have never had a problem with FF upgrades, it even saves my settings with every upgrade. I have 5 and it's been just like the other upgrades no problem. I have W 7.

Lynn, FF on my XP computer updated to v. 6 today, and everything seems just fine. My bookmarks bar is there and everything. All my add-ons were compatible, too.

I was having a problem with my status bar freezing or hanging when I tried to get in some of the sites I visit. Also our cable company has been doing maintenance in our area so I called them. The tech I talked to the second time said it sounds more like a router problem. I told him I have Linksys, he replied so did he and he sometimes had to unplug and plug it back in, 2 or 3 times a day to work on line. He suggested I disconnect the router for a few days to see if my PC works properly. I did that early this AM and it has been fine so far. I will know more in the morning when I turn the PC on. Since some others had a problem with freezing/hanging on the status bar, this info might help them.

According to a betanews.com article, Opera browser (which will be switching to the Chrome-like engine for future browser releases) is discontinuing its built-in email client as part of that browser. A beta release of the new Opera Mail stand-alone email client is available for download (the first link provided in the article below). As I say, it's a beta release, but according to the first paragraph of the article, it's "based on the integrated Opera email client found in the current version of Opera 12.15 FINAL." I don't know how a 'beta' release of a stand-alone client relates to the fact that it's from a very stable version of the client in the Opera browser, but so far my experience of the stand-alone client is positive. Anyway.... Warning: Opera's client uses the labeling system (before Gmail had it) and does not use folders as such. It may take some getting used to for those coming from OE, but I thought I'd at least mention this new-comer to the list of offline email clients. I think I might add a tub/shower in that bathroom if this is the only bathroom on the main floor and you are going to live there forever and there is a room that *could* ever be used as a bedroom on the main floor (for temporary or permanent disability). Otherwise, I'd do the cubbies in A with the space in B, except I might make the "hallway" (along the cubbies to the garage) a little wider to make sure there was room for passing... And, I'd want a drop counter somewhere--probably where you have the closet in B...

Thank you guys for your feedback. I am scratching my head, staring at these drawings, re-measuring things on a daily basis. Just can not come up with the right layout. Few comments: 1. If I move the entry to incorporate the chase in the peninsula then on a daily basis I would be coming in straight into the family room. Also, the side entry is not full heigh because at one point there was a second staircase going upstairs from the bathroom area on the first floor. So by closing in the entry I can not get a good L shape corner there. 2. I am considering moving the chase. I am also estimating the cost to be $2-3k so it is not a problem. The bigger problem is if the chase is also a support column to two load bearing walls that intersect at that point. In the current layout, which you can not see form these drawings, there is a hallway from the side entry (wall is paralle to the wall of the door on the bathroom. 3. Assuming the chase can not be moved then moving the fridge to the alcove makes sence. I like that idea. Few questions. If it is where GreenDesign put it then how would the doors open? The side wall is 40 inches deep. Would I have to pull the fridge up forward in order to be able to open it (it is french door style). Maybe keep it in the alcove, but next to the fireplace (that is where it is today) since that recess is 21 inches. So if I keep design 1 layout of the island, then I would switch the DW to to be on the right side of the sink and then the sitting of the chairs would be paralle to the alcove and to the family room. More than 4 people can sit in that area. May have to redesign this layout and post if it is had to follow. In this layout the range will be closer to the pantry. Yey!

The current version of any application should be used whenever possible. FF v6.0 was released a couple of days ago. The only problem a user might have is add-on compatability. There is always some lag time and some never upgrade themselves.

Since all your preferences, add-ons, and bookmarks are kept in a folder other than the application folder it is safe to install v6.0 for personal testing. If you do not like the upgrade or find too many of your add-ons ar not compatible you can just delete it and revert back to a prior version with a new install. I did it when v5.0 was released as I reverted to v4.1 without a concern.

Thanks everyone.

So this will be a new laptop. I'm not upgrading - I'm installing a fresh version of Firefox - so I don't think I have any preferences,add-ons,bookmarks stored. I have Xmarks - and can sync my bookmarks - but I assume I'll be doing the addons and preferences from scratch.

Firefox keeps updating version 3 - and I keep getting those updates. other than new features - which I may or may not like, is there a security reason to go with 6 or 5 - rather than the latest version of firefox 3?

Any features in version 5 or 6 that people have liked? found to be an improvement?

Before I let FF update to v.6, I had read that it contained a number of security fixes, so I would think that it would be a good idea to update to that version.

Interestingly, I turned on my laptop this morning and went to make a coffee while it booted up. I returned to find it completing the installation of FF6 (I had been using FF5).

For the last couple of days I've been getting pop-ups asking me if I want to do this upgrade, but I've just clicked
"Ask me later".

This time, FF just did it! Doesn't really worry me, but strange....

Firefox 7.0 Beta 1 was released today. This is really high speed.

Click on the link below. On the right you will see the newest release along with older versions. Select any full version that interests you. Avoid the betas unless it is just for learning. After you have selected a full version select the Change Log. It will supply you with pertinent information.

I am using 4.0.1 as I saw no improvement with v5.0 and several of my add-ons wouldn't work. I am thinking about giving v6.0 a try though as it is just busy work to change between versions.

Damcoy - thanks for that link. AFter reading comments about the various versions, it seemed I'd be happy sticking with 3.6.20. I know I didn't like 4. Six is too new. And you didn't love 5. I'll keep my eyes out for new reactions to the various versions, but 3.6.20 is working great for me. Especially on a new Windows 7 pc. I am loving windows 7 - some incredibly useful features (like mousing over shrunk windows to bring it up in full screen - but disappears one mouse is moved - boy is that handy for me).

So the combo works for me.

Lynn,

I installed FF6 the other day as an overwrite. This is something I normally don't do as I prefer clean installs. I just thought I would try it and I didn't have much time. It works fine and all my add-ons work with it.
