He is gorgeous! My neighbor has a German Shepherd that is just about the same age. What a wonderful dog she is! So sweet and smart.

If you could find a name that you liked that had a similar sound to "Bullet" you could rename him.

Years ago we took in a three year old German Shepherd. She came from a kennel that bred police dogs. She came with the name Shep, which I immediately changed to Chef.

Handsome boy....what an intelligent face. Our newfie mix's name was Booger. Ummmm....no. We named him Bear (with assistance from CFers)and he is often BooBear. He could care less...he's just happy to be with us.

Well I've been calling him Bully or Bully Bear or Bully Boy. Yep. I'm a sap! LOL

Fact is he has a lot to learn and learning a new name just adds to what we have to teach him. I have looked and looked and can't really come up with something similar sounding. So I guess if we don't think of something within the week, he may just be Bullett (or Bullitt...Tim liked that idea).

He is super smart. He's figuring things out very quickly. He wants so badly to play with Chessa and once in a while she reciprocates but we have to watch that she doesn't get overly excited or she has "episodes". But he's learning that she is not an energetic, or even interested playmate.

He's a love and we are happy and very lucky to have found him.

Oh Linda, what sweet eyes. I really like him. My uncle's favorite dog was named Bullet. I can still picture my grandmother describing how M would get on the back porch and yell, "Bullet! Bullet!" and she would just smile and giggle. I don't think she was too fond of his name either, but a fast dog is a fast dog. I did rename Mishka, Maggie, by calling her Mishka Maggie Moo for a while and then just using Maggie alone. It worked.

He can learn a new name faster than you think. And you don't need a B sound or any such thing. Just start using the new name and reward him (cookie or "Good boy!") every time he looks at you when you say his name. He'll learn faster than you will.

(Cookies for big dogs... try the Old Mother Hubbard smallest size cookies at PetSmart, and break them in half. My dogs love hte peanut butter flavor. Carry a pocketful at all times when you are training. And alternate the cookie with the verbal, using the cookie more often at first and when you are very close to him. Gradually use your voice more.)

I used to use Bil-Jacks for training when Mo was a puppy, but I haven't seen them in stores up here. I think I have seen OMH brand, tho. I'll look for them.

Yes, the training tips and tricks from Mojo's obedience class are all coming back to me as I work with this guy! It's amazing what you forget/remember and how you have to keep in mind that everything you do will have an impact on how he behaves!

I'm so happy for you and your new fur baby.

When we adopted our Jack Russell from the local pound, she was 18 months old, or at least that's what we were told. I changed her name immediately to something entirely different and there was never a problem. She's been with us ten years now and has ruled the roost for years.

Working full time is why I haven't gotten a dog. I grew up with dogs, and always had dogs while my kids were growing up, but when my late mother's dog, our last dog, passed away, we decided we couldn't get another dog until one of us was retired, and could take care of it. It's just not fair to a dog. (Cats are different, and don't care if you're home or not - up to a point. They get mad when we leave them for a weekend, but that doesn't happen much.)

It was a good call of that man to surrender his dog. If he knew what a good home he found for Bullet, I bet he'd be relieved and happy.

If you don't like Bullet then change it. My sister the vet says with the right amount of treats and hugs it should not be a problem.

But if you must stick with a "B" name that has a similar sound...... I once dated a guy whose first name was Beckett.

Oh my Linda! He sure is a beauty. I know that you will fatten him up in no time! What fun it is to resuce an animal and have them live their life with you. We did the same thing one year ago and Penny is such a wonderful addition to our family. You will enjoy him for many years to come and that will make you HAPPY!

Ashley adopted a German Shepherd too, his name was Rex. He gets called everything anyway, as my family is wont to do, mostly he gets called "Doofus". Buster, of course, has become the WonderDoodle. The WonderWeiner was Actually "Annie's Lucky in Love", his name was supposed to be "Lucky", but he became WeinerDog, then WeinerKing, then Wonderweiner. Cooper has become Noops, my neice called him "nooper" but I mostly call him "baby" I think you should name him whatever you want, although I also like Bullet, being a Roy Rogers/Trigger fan, LOL.

We decided to keep the name but spell it Bullitt like the old Steve McQueen movie. It works, and he's used to it.

But I still call him a number of things as listed above, and have recently added "Woolly Bully" to the repertoire! LOL

We are loving having him here. He keep us...um...young. Yeah that's it...young!

Nice looking pup! Bullet is a cool name I think. Believe me if you want to switch it he will catch on fast. They are super smart dogs so no worries. Are you political? Perhaps Ballot? (JK!!!)

Here is my Shepherd I adopted summer 2010. I have another yellow lab (Logan: aka Loagie Hoagie) who will never replace my Duke but he has his own personality and makes me laugh every day! I'll start another thread with him later.
