So this is what I ended up buying:

For $399 I think I got a lot of computer. Unfortunately HP made it's big announcement right after I picked it up at Staples. One of the reasons I picked HP is because I've heard good things about their support. Who knows what will happen now?

sounds very nice, I doubt there will be any cut off of support for some time. Likely someone else will buy out the computer section.

I agree with Raven. I called HP support today for help with my printer. My tech was in the Philippines, she was patient, spoke excellent English and no background noise.

You can find computers that do what you wish for less than the amount you have indicated. For a faster computer be sure you choose a dual core processor; either AMD or Intel have those, and most new computers come with such. I'd also recommend at least 4GB of RAM, although more won't hurt. If you are not into gaming or photo editing, an on-board video card is just fine. You can probably find what you want for $500 or less, if you watch for sales. Search the websites of Dell, HP, Gateway, and others to see what is available, and then look at ads at the big box stores, including Wal-Mart, Staples, Office Max, Best Buy?, etc. You should be able to find one that meets your needs and then some. Why are you needing a new computer after 4 years? Just because you want a newer operating system, or is the one you have no longer capable of doing what you want? I ask, because even though I have a newer Windows 7 laptop, I'm still using my 5+ year old XP desktop for most of my work, including online banking and investing, photo work, e-mailing, browsing, etc.----all the things you say you do with the exception of business office functions, but with the right program, it is fully capable of doing that, too. Good luck, whatever you decide, and remember it does pay to read, research, and shop around.

I don’t think there is any way for us to really help before you go and investigate what is actually going on with all aspects of the buildings. I do not think darker shingles will have any real affect on the look of the roofs . To make these separate housing units you will need to decide how this is going to work. Will these be a small condo type project? I would want to take an HVAC pro with me when I go with the realtor.

I would replace the large bow window with two separate double hung windows. Place the windows on each end of the existing header and frame a narrow wall between them. I’d add a gable roof and porch at the door. Shutters don’t bother me but I know there are some purists on this site that hate them. Do what you like. Option is to wrap the windows with some wide trim. I’m not good with colors, ask others to fill in that element.

I have (thus far) refused to update from Win 7 to 10, or buy a new computer. My mother's computer is updated to 10. She doesn't run it much and prit'much every time I'm there (never more than 3-wks span between visits) it takes between 15 to 45 mins (I've timed it) for it to settle down to being usable, and then it wants to install more updates on shut-down. I'm not referring to updating antivirus or antimalware software.

I think America has similar laws to ours - or we copy you, whichever. This will mean they are required to maintain a service department for X number of years. Bankruptcy would be different but this is just selling off a chunk of business.

Additional information including topic updates should be kept on the original thread. A chat format can leave members confused, slow down contributing and learning, and delay problem resolution.

What kind of warranty came with the computer? It will likely be 6-12 months before anything happens at HP; the lawyers and accountants need to do their thing and HP's shareholders will likely get a vote too.

I've got that exact PC and luv it paid more but got a 22" monitor, and all in one HP printer in my deal... nice and fast you will luv it!!

Sounds as if you got a lot of pc for your money. I've always had good luck with my HP computers, and I know you'll enjoy yours.

If they truly are getting out of pc sale business, from news lately on one product, it looks like they maybe will have firesale pricing on things eventually.

Don't think so. They are not stopping production of pc's like they did the Touch Pad. The pc division will be sold or spun off as a separate company or something of the sort. HP computers will be around for a while.

BTW, anyone know where I can pick up one of these $99 Touch Pads?
