Looking for suggestions to update/replace the large window?

We have a split level, 1960's mid-century modern home. We need to replace the large picture window and wondering if we should replace with a different style or smaller window. Also looking for suggestions to update the rest of the house as well - different siding, shutters etc.

I would replace the large bow window with two separate double hung windows. Place the windows on each end of the existing header and frame a narrow wall between them. I’d add a gable roof and porch at the door. Shutters don’t bother me but I know there are some purists on this site that hate them. Do what you like. Option is to wrap the windows with some wide trim. I’m not good with colors, ask others to fill in that element.

Lots of potential. Suggest you begin with a complete plan -- start with the big picture, then focus on individual projects that will all work together to get you to your end result.

The window is a good example. What you decide should be in line with your long term plan.

Fresh landscaping would make a big difference too. Everything seems planted too close to the house.

Hi Ken,I'm in the Cleveland area. Yes, I looove oaks, and it killed me when this tree started to die. I bought my property because of the oaks. On fast growing trees - the arborist who's removing the tree for me kind of "chastised" me for planting two corkscrew willows in my yard. I think they are a lovely tree when mature but he said they are junk trees that die in 12-15 years. I see specimens around my neighborhood that look quite old and healthy and I just can't believe these trees are less than 20 years old. After what he said I did some research on fast growers and apparently they produce weak wood, so while I don't want anything that will be dead in 12 years, I would like something that will give me some nice shade within 5 years, or is that unrealistic? I planted a Crimson King Maple two years ago, and OMG that is the slowest growing tree I've ever seen. I think I will take your suggestion and call some lumber yards, and I'm always on the lookout for good nursery suggestions!

WindowsonWashington, thank you for your helpful response. I will check out the 3M film but wonder if it will have the clarity of the two products I have already checked out. Many do a good job for less $$$, but I want the film to let in almost as much light as the window without any film. This is a difficult mission to fulfill and the two samples I have meet this criteria. I'll let you know how 3M compares to the competition I'm putting it up against. When you refer to the large custom vinyl windows, are you referring to mine, to the huge ones by seeking sun, or to both of us? Also, I don't understand how any window film could cause a window failure. SeekingSun, the post was edited as I forgot to add that I will certainly keep you posted how my search progresses. I don't want another winter in a house with covered windows for half the day so want to make a purchase as soon as possible after doing my due diligence. I don't think I would make windows smaller. The house will always be a split level which is a contemporary form even though they got detailed as colonials and such. I would probably switch to casement windows, remove shutters and paint the foundation to match the brick detail, I would have no problem keeping the bay, but I would also consider a flat picture window, which is appropriate for this style of house.

A flat picture window with casements on the side so cross ventilation is possible if needed.
