Any Hockey fans?

Red Wings season starts tonight with the unveiling of the Stanley Cup banner at the Joe! Whoo hoo! With our Tigers and Lions (oh, my!) disappointing us at least we have the Wings to take our minds off of the terrible economy and the election etc. etc. etc.!

After the Penguins, the Red Wings are my 2nd favorite team (so I was a pretty happy girl last spring). I don't know why, but I've always loved them. I think it's the all red, very classic hockey look. DH is a Habs fan, and the boys follow suit.

Between all my kids' games and the hockey package on cable, I probably watch 200 games a season.

First level, center, at least nine rows up (or more to see over the glass) if they want to see all of the ice and watch plays develope. Second level first row center is cool too as you generally have more leg room and know one righ in front of you. Standing room only is generally around the second and or third level seating behind the seats and is standing only....no seats. Not fun IMHO. Rail could be for club seats and or private club rooms that corporations generally own. If they want to be up close to the action and see the speed of the game and see players slam into the glass get closer to the ice. More action but you can't see all of the ice and plays developing but it is fun. You really see the speed of the game and size of the players. The corners on either side of the net is good for this too and you can see more ice. (not behind the net) Hope this helps you some. : ) David

Have a wonderful time--there's absolutely nothing like seeing a hockey game in person. And how fortunate--whoever wins, one of you will be happy--will make for a fun experience, I think Really hate to bring this up--but if things there are anything like they are here (Philadelphia), it's highly unlikely you'll get anywhere near any of the players on game night. They're really protected and kept away from the fans. Which is sort of weird, because they live right among us (I live in NJ--as far as I know, all the Flyers live on this side of the river. DH has been to some of their houses and met them in the course of doing his job, my sister lives around the corner from one, they frequent the local bars and restaurants). Anyway, I wanted to suggest that the best way to get to see players up close, chat with them, and maybe get a photo or autograph is to go to a practice. You should be able to get the practice schedule and location on the team website. The Flyers practice facility is just a few blocks from my dd's house, and they're wonderful about chatting with fans in the parking lot after practice sessions. It's the BEST place to actually see the guys. Maybe that's something else you could do while there, if there's a practice session scheduled? Know you'll have a fantastic time, ENJOY!!!

Gave it up, eh? So, that makes them, what, a bunch of wusses? Good names die hard. Not nearly as hard as the real fighting Sioux did. Most especially when the US tried to completely erase any trace of the people, let alone the name. Good names, you say? Really? Real live Sioux don't think so, don't like the way it's being used, at all. A sad day? Sad for who? The insensitive yahoos who insisted that using a name that offended ACTUAL Sioux was stupid? Here's an idea. If someone says they are offended, take them at their word. If a whole nation of people are offended, trust they know what they feel. Even more irony...using Bison as a point of State pride. lol An animal that real Indian tribes considered sacred and an integral part of their culture and their very survival was used against them in the US Government led genocide. They knew they could hasten the demise of the Sioux and break their will if they eliminated such an important cultural icon. But, by all means, "honor" the very animal that the great State of North and South Dakota once went out of their way to decimate to hurt the real natives of ND and SD, simply out of spite.

Normally the UND Sioux are our mortal enemies! But...NDSU never did get hockey going beyond the "Club" level. So.....I was just rooting for the Sioux because they're a ND team. So, no Sioux championship this year. If it wasn't for the earlier OT offsides call that eventually disallowed the "winning" goal, UND would've moved on. Faron

I'm at 3 games this weekend and counting.... Let's see, Habs lost last night, 2 kids' games today (plus one soccer game), Pens play tonight and 2 more kids games tomorrow. That's a 6 game a weekend average. Not including weeknight games.

I'm cold and tired of snack bar food.

Well, tonight is so special if you are a hockey fan in Canada....

Not only will the Leafs beat the Habs...sorry Mitch!

but...

We are unveiling our new "Hockey Night in Canada" tune. Only if you are Canadian will you understand. For 25 years , give or take, there has been a "tune" played at the start of every hockey game broadcasted by CBC, usually our Staurday night game.....

If you are Canadian you know the tune, hockey fan or not.

The owner of the tune refused to renew for a decent price and Hockey Night In Canada went looking for a new tune...to be unveiled tonight at a game between our two Canadian teams...... I know get a life, but this is serious stuff! Anyhow it's better than anything else going on these days.

Sorry Sharon, this must hurt, I just read that the Habs won 6 to 1 ; at your home opening game, no less. It's a long season so I'm sure you'll have a chance to make it up.

I had no clue about the new tune, thanks for the heads up.

I'm with AM with lots of hockey. Let's see, two games for my 8 year old this weekend and I coached two for my daughter's team. Favorite team is whichever game I am watching my kids play. But I am partial to the Sabres. Must be a regional thing.

Toronto or Boston games get our city bustling with activity on the streets, as early as 3 P.M. on game day, lots of "non-habs jersey wearing" visitors cheering for the enemy, I mean the visiting team, lol.....

when I got married my husband made me start learning the Wings by their numbers. I never got to double digits. But I did learn to name the original 6 teams!

Go Wings! (though we won't really start watching until the playoffs...Gotta get through College Basketball... and since we are nearer Bruins country now, that's ok with me)

We have friends/distant relatives who work for the franchise, and have seen some fun pics of them with the Stanley Cup. And I used to work at Bagley and 2nd and remember craning out my window (on the 22nd floor) to see the Wings drive down Woodward on one of the championship parades.

I do miss Hockeytown. That was the year a giant inflated squid/octopus hung from the top of the Fisher Building... I could see it from my office...

regarding those cats around town, these days we're routing for a really good Lions Draft Pick, LOL!
