I received an email from Comcast telling me that I needed to change the outgoing port for my email . They claim a "one click " fix with I. E. will do this . As I mostly use Firefox ( but do use I. E. for work issues) it won't allow me to do this " one click fix" I have printed directions for how to do the change, but am questioning why it's necessary at all. The change is to Port 587. Is anything known about this ?
Action Taken: In an effort to help prevent spam and ensure the security of our network and customers, Comcast has modified your modemÂs settings to prevent the sending of email on port 25. That is the default port email programs such as Outlook Express use to send email. WeÂve taken this action because we may have detected virus-like activity from your modem or received reports from other email providers that mail from your modem generated complaints from their users. Please read this message to understand how this action may impact your ability to send email and what you should do next.
many of the ISP's are doing that, if you do a google search of port 587 or port 25 or a search of your ISP name and the specific port you will see many entries, for some they were told it was due to a possible virus on their pc that was sending out a lot of spam mail, however that is not necessarily the case which is quite misleading and could cause some novice users a lot of trouble trying to find out what virus and how to clean it when in fact the real reason they wanted them to change was their new policies which is what they should have stated to everyone. Making some think they have infections when they don't is not right. I am happy to see they were not trying to tell you that you were infected. Glad it was helpful to you.
I got the same email from Comcast and was unable to get it fixed without calling them. They insisted I had been sending Spam and someone reported me. BULL. I have never sent spam in my life. I don't forward anything either and I certainly don't email people I don't know. I use Avast, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster, Zone Alarm, AdAware and my computer is clean clean clean.
I should have googled or came here instead of calling them. I was so angry after getting off the phone. Waking up to a computer with all six email addresses locked wasn't fun either.....
I download my gmail to Outlook Express and the outgoing SMTP port used is 465 and incoming POP3 uses port 995. Another web mail service uses SMTP port 25 and POP3 port 110.
