New fountain in back yard

Yesterday I had a new fountain installed in my back yard. I haven't had time to take more pictures yet but will do so after we get the lawn mowed and a few more things put into place. Bernard has pretty much finished the landscaping that I hired him to do with just some minimal clean-up to do, and so I will also post pictures of the revised front yard when that is complete.

I'm very happy with the fountain, and I have a direct view of it from my bedroom window. I decided I wanted a fountain instead of a pond because the maintenance would be much easier, and I wanted something more formal. We will be putting stones around the base of the fountain and make a walkway to the house in the next week or so. I haven't decided which stones to use yet.

The sounds from the fountain are very relaxing and inviting, and so I will probably be spending too much time sitting in my pergola instead of getting other things done.

Any suggestions for what I should put around the fountain in terms of paving stones?

Gorgeous!
What about leaving some space between the paving stones and planting the "stepable" plants in between (link below).
The fountain has a bit of an antique feel to me and the green growing between stones would compliment that. In my mind anyway!!

Lars, the new fountain is gorgeous!

I second the suggestion of Stepables. They have a nice selection of both informal & formal styles/behaviors. Stepables plants are available at most of our local nurseries/garden centers.

One suggestion is to keep proportion in mind & the size of the fountain when planning out the walkway. Why am I even typing this? You are the designer... LOL

I'm anxious to see more pictures of your gardens.

Sharon I can't find the pictures of your path. I just started my adventure into gardening last year with vegetables. I was dared by my husband and that was all I needed. With the help of my dear fiend, (a master gardner and mentor) I cut down the necessary trees the next day and had the veggies & planted within the next 3days..so much for challenges in my family. I just made new beds and paths for my new perineal garden....a work in progress since it is just me and limited funds. For my paths, I called my tree man and asked if he would bring tree clipping from his jobs. To my surprise I ended up with 3 huge loads that I made my paths, saving the rest to season. Maybe not the best material for a path, but it was free and it fades into my landscape nicely. Now I am adding plants as I can afford. Love this site.

SE PA and NJ are not exactly pineapple capitals! My Dad started a pineapple from the top of one he bought at supermarket... sliced top off with very little flesh and just planted in a pot. It had to be repotted several times as it grew... over several years. It went outside on his front steps in late-April or so and came back inside around the end of October. After he passed away and sibs and I were clearing out his house, just didn't have the heart to leave it behind. Kinda funny how outside plants are immediately BIGGER when you bring them inside!?! It sat on a stool in corner of my NJ liviingroom. Then one day in the dead of winter I was almost scared by the sight of a TEENY pineapple growing up out of the center on a stalk. It was about the size of an egg. By the time I moved it outside in late-April or early-May... about the size of a lemon. Was about the size of a decent sized orange when it started bending the stem over, so I cut it off. The AROMA filled the house as this ROCK hard mini-pineapple sat on my kitchen counter for a week or so. The minute it had the slightest give, I cut it up. It was absolutely delicious! Even the core, that's generally tough in a regular sized fruit was tender. Needed NO sugar. Have a little Asian market near me... gonna have to see if they have yuzu!?!

Thanks for the suggestions, but I was planning to do something more formal, as the fountain is not that far from the cement next to the house. I do have some steppables that go from the patio to the pergola, but they came with the house. They work fine there because the path winds a bit, and the cobblestone patio under the pergola is an organic, informal shape.

I'll post some more pictures later to show the house in relation to the fountain.

The fountain is a lovely focal point for your yard. I have a friend with a large pond and waterfall and it is wonderful but a huge amount of work. It's always something! They have numerous Koi and goldfish which produce new babies every year. Not long ago the pond attracted a heron or egret who decided it looked like a nice dinner spot. And the leaves need to be fished out and algae needs to be dealt with often. Another time the fish got sick from some parasite. And and and... Yes, a fountain offers all the ambient water sounds with much less trouble.

Is the fountain terra cotta? I see the brick edging and would suggest a brick surround and path from the home. The addition of some "stepables" sounds right.

Here is a photo of a similar, but much smaller fountain in a nice brick setting with some potted plants and plants in amongst the bricks.

The fountain is beautiful, Lars.

When we were planning for our backyard firepit, I went online and looked at landscapers websites for ideas. they always have galleries of their work and there are lots of great inspirations to be had looking through them.

Can't wait to see more pics and even more pics once it is totally finished!

That's exactly the kind of fountain I would have if I had the room! I've seen a couple like it at landscape places--so wonderful the way they sound.

Feng Shui revolves around the elements of wood, fire, earth, water, and metal.

You have wood (pergola)
You have fire (BBQ)
You have earth
Now you have water

You need some major metalic element to balance and bring total harmony to that little paradise.

Very nice! I third what was said by dgkrich and tricia. I would leave available space between the fountain and the spacer brick for a more cohesive look. Maybe more maintenace but a nicer look. Very lovely Lars! I would love to see you backyard some day.
