How do I determine if I need to upgrade windows?

As noted earlier I have lost features on one computer only - both FF and IE.

My log-in frames are missing on some sites and some Netflix features are missing. I powered it down overnight and rebooted. Upgraded Malwarebites, Ad-aware, and Avast and ran these and restarted. Still lost features on Netflix and another site.

How do I determine if I need an upgrade to my XP? Do I need a newer windows?

Your problem sounds like java or flash type of issue, but it's weird that it occurs across 2 browsers indicating a windows issue. You could try a system restore to a time before the issue occurred this would address a windows file issue if present.

Lets face it XP is old and it's certainly recommend to up-grade to a current operating system like Windows 7.

goodkamra, have you planted anything yet? It really depends on the specific annuals you buy. My petunias, for example, are pretty much jammed together with just a couple of inches in between at best. My fancy coleus, with the "fountain" shape and lanced leaves, needs room to show off. But I think your ten inches apart will look like a really spotty planting with many annuals. In fact, when you're planting a container you typically want to go a bit closer than what the little tag says on the plant. Linda's idea of the graph paper is a good one. Draw a circle to scale on the grid, and then take it to the garden center with you. When you find a plant you like, look at its recommended spacing and plot it to the circle. Different plants, different plots. Then throw in a few extra to allow for the scootching together you'll probably find you need to do, and you're set! I wish I'd thought to do this graph paper when I planted my 10' planter this year. Instead, I bought the plants in three trips. Bought a bunch, set them out on the soil and eyeballed how far they'd go. Bought a second bunch and planted everything. Bought the third bunch to fill in where things needed it. I enjoy shopping, but it certainly wasn't very efficient!

Your dryer is probably considered a "super" capacity model, probably 7 cu ft drum size. More important than than the actual drum size is how much space the clothes need for proper drying. A full load for a dryer (when initially wet) typically fills the drum 1/2 full, or I was going to say up to 2/3 full but that may be too much. Maybe 3/5. There must be room for the clothes to tumble, and they'll get fluffier when dry. What kind of washer do you have? If it's a "matched" pair the capacities should be compatible ... unless you're overloading the washer. I'm thinking more likely you have a clogged vent duct. Check that out before blaming the dryer. How does your vent duct run? Straight through an outside wall? Or are there one or more turns, up through the ceiling, down through the floor, etc., etc.? With the dryer running, go outside and check that there's a fairly strong flow of air coming out. Are you using flex-duct between the dryer and wall? Is the dryer pushed back too far or off-kilter, compressing the duct? That happened to a friend, she kept telling me her dryer isn't heating, takes way too long to dry. Turns out it WAS heating, but the machine was shoved back against the wall, crushing the duct. This, for example, is a very bad thing.

A permanantly mounted (over range type) microwave typically requires a dedicated circuit. A dishwasher can't be connected to the small appliance circuits and would require a new circuit. It would be a good idea to have an electrician do load calculations on the individual units and the building as a whole to see if the existing service is adequate for the existing loads and any new ones. That will determine what, if anything, needs to be done to the service. Adding new circuits is almost always possible, the difficulty will vary depending on how the building is constructed, how large the building is, and other factors. Call 3 or 4 electrical contractors and get each to give you pricing on EXACTLY the same things. The load calc will likely cost you but will give you a good idea where you stand on the work that needs to be done.

Thank you JDS. I dont know why I was focused on just the changes either. I have never tried to understand building codes before so this is new to me. You suggestion makes sense. I tried to print chapter 4 off the web and it wont - which I assume is a way for them to get you to pay for it. I'm not going to do that because I am getting too deep into the weeds as it is. This is a tract home and I dont want to be the customer who shows up every day with a dog eared copy of the building code. I do however want to know enough about what is required and what is above and beyond so that I can have an intelligent conversation with the builder about what is important to me including those things that I might be willing to spend money on. Am I reading the current code to say that builders have to do blower door tests and show 3 ACH or less? (402.4.1.2) If so, my approach should probably be to specify that I would like to see a lower number - something that is achievable with typical materials and maybe a more conscientious attention to detail. Does that make sense? Thanks again

There's lots of things that could cause those kinds of problems, including something on Netflix's end.

An upgrade may be indicated when there are enough new features in the operating system to justify the expense of the new operating system. Of course, my definition of "justify" may not be quite the same as yours.

You also need to ensure that your computer can meet the requirements of a new operating system. Generally speaking any computer bought with Windows XP is not likely to have sufficient memory or processing power to make running Windows 7 enjoyable.

You might want to consider backing up critical data and doing a fresh install of XP. Cleaning out the old garbage can make a world of difference in the performance of an older computer. Plus there's no financial investment, just time.

Piecemeal upgrades with new hardware and operating systems on old computers is usually a waste of money. Better option is to keep an eye out for used or refurbished equipment that came with Vista or Windows 7 when new.
