Sources for basic white hex tile? glazed vs unglazed?

Hi y'all. I'm finally, finally, finally ready to start in on tiling not one, but two bathrooms. (Two different long stories here...shorter, my mom moved in and hated all my ideas for guest bathroom that's now her bathroom, and my son's bathtub leak means a big remodel upstairs.) I assumed I'd be using Daltile white subway tile for walls, with an interesting stripe to be named later, and matching white glazed hex tiles on the floor, with blue hex tiles added for interest. Only problem is...Daltile doesn't make white glazed tiles -- they're unglazed -- nor does it make hex tiles in a variety of colors -- black and white seem to be the only options.

The tile store salesperson told me that unglazed tile will be more slip-resistant, but harder to clean.

I can:

1. Look for alternate sources for floor tile. Walker Zanger seems to have glazed tile with only black & white choices. I'm very fussy about whites matching each other and don't know if the W-Z white hex would match the Daltile white subway, or if this would mean I'd have to buy W-Z $ubway tile. And with W-Z, I still don't have alternate colors.

2. Get the Daltile white unglazed...I hate to scrub! and no colors.

3. Ask GW for alternate ideas.

Hi Blue!

I was in the Daltile showroom yesterday looking for 2-inch unglazed hex. I was told that the unglazed is available in 1-inch and 2-inch but the 2-inch is special order as is any color but white. I seem to remember several colors were available but the lead time was approximately 6 weeks.

Back when I thought I might want glazed tiles I bookmarked a couple of sites. They both appear to have white hex in matte or shiny glaze. The second one has 2-inch in a pretty blue glaze. I know nothing about these sources but they might be a place to start. Sorry, I can't seem to figure out how to post a link.

I am looking for simple glazed 1" hex and traditional subway for a shower. Our contractor suggested I look at American Olean. I haven't made it into a showroom yet to see it in person, but I noticed on their website that they have mosaic floor tiles with colored centers. You might check it out. Good luck!

If you want unglazed in herringbone, you could always do something like 4x8 quarry tile. ANY tile that's half as wide as it it long can be used for herringbone. I'll tell you right now-- anything you find in a mounted mosaic pattern is going to cost bigtime. If you want to do a classic floor pattern, what about something like a basketweave or pinwheel pattern? Both are as classic as it gets, and readily available from severl sources. You could always do the herringbone on the walls with subway tiles!

He said he MEANT to "weave" every other tile like he did. What do I know? Is his stage name Pee Wee Herman? In addition, the caulking goes IN PLACE of grout, not OVER it. He needs to score that corner out or the caulking won't stay. As for just grouting the bevels of the tile, If that's truly the case, the grout won't stay. I'm curious-- what did he have to say about the time he spent "placing" that huge gap in the middle of the wall? And what is he doing about it? As for your GC, I also question HIS judgement and expertise if he feels this is a good installation. It might be able to be made acceptable (and that's MAYBE), but BY NO MEANS, is this good work!!

Reposted from the Old House Forum: I just discovered Subway Ceramics today. I am contemplating installing their white 3x6 for a kitchen backsplash (white Ikea kithcen--Lidingo--with oak floors, stainless steel perimeter counters and lyptus butcher block island top). Has anyone installed SC's product (or had it installed?) Frankly, I am worried that my tileman (who I am sure is proficient but no artisan) will not get the 1/16" grout lines right, which I want gray-colored. Also,I am at odds with my wife and decorator over this. They want handmade white-glazed terracotta 3x6 subway with irregularities in the size--and white grout. I'm sure it's a nice look, but it ain't what they got in the subway. I'm from New York City and had a "train pass" in high school. I'm also a lifelong subway buff who visited the old Jay St. Transit Museum at least 20 times. Wife and Decorator are from Jersey...nome sayin? Anyway, my wife is cool with me making the ultimate call on the backsplash 'cuz she is in total control of exterior and interior paint colors, but we still need to hammer out all the kinks, so to speak. Anyway, I'm wondering whether I should believe the hype that SC spews about being the only manufacturer of truly flat, square-edged subway tile. Also, is obtaining uniform 1/16 " grout lines some kind of tremendous installation challenge? Comment? (My backsplash is only about 31 sf, so cost is not a major issue.) These are my unglazed ceramic tiles, 80 years old and with no cleaning. We just were chipping the other tiles off of them and stopped to take a pic. I don't know if they make them like that anymore, but to say they were durable is an understatement! I believe american Olean makes some now.

Do NOT get unglazed tiles. If you don't want shiny or slippery you can get glazed matte tiles. The unglazed are impossible to clean and start to look grey very quickly. I really wish I could remember the name of our tiles for you. If it comes to me, I'll post.

We are in the middle of our build and my DH just installed the Daltile Octagon & Dot tile with Delorean Gray grout in our kids bathroom. I do believe it is like a matte finish. We bought it at Home Depot with a 10% off coupon and it was about $2.20 sq foot if I remember correctly.

My 2nd choice was going to be this website below, but they were much more pricey. I do like that they have several different options to choose from though. I do also believe their tile is handmade as well.

You might try mosaictilesupplies(dot)com for one-and-a-half-inch glazed tiles in white and deep blue. They have other colors as well. Not inexpensive.

And while searching I finally stumbled upon hextile(dot)com which used to be under Bungalow tiles. It lets you directly order the Subway Ceramics hex tiles that Dreamywhite linked to. Hallelujah! I can still get the 2-inch unglazed I've got my heart set on.

That octagon and dot is awfully pretty though...
