What are CD-R and CD-RW?

I know this is beyond basic--too basic for even Google to answer. I have been buying both of these to use to back up my files. The idea is that if my computer crashes, I can use these discs to put all my files on the new computer.

Which one is correct to use? I can't even get an answer at Staples, which is why I'm using both. I know one means read-only and the other means rewritable but my big question is: Which one will let me transfer files to a new computer? And then modify those files, especially Word docs, my address book and so on?

RW type disks, whether it be CD or DVD,
should only be used for short term storage.

Either type disks will let you
transfer files to a different computer.

If you use the RW type disks you
can edit the files on the disks.
If you use the R type disks you
can copy the files to a computer,
then edit the files, and then
put them on another disk, R or RW.

RW type disks are not a reliable storage media.
If you are just moving a file from one computer
to another you shouldn't delete the original until
until the copy is safely on the other computer.

If you are just wanting to back up files on your computer,
use the R type disks and make a new copy periodically.

If you have a small number of files to back up
consider using a web service to store them
or get a USB jump drive. (very handy to have).

Whatever backup solution you choose remember,
it won't work if you don't use it.

For your purpose the CD-R is alright to use but once used to store your data you cannot write over it. You can add more data till the CD is filled

You could of course also use the rewritable but they are much more expensive as you may have noticed when buying them. If you frequently update your backups this may prove better for you, especially as you already have some of them.

Having never used a CD-RW I cannot explain how to write over existing data but it should not be too difficult. Perhaps someone else will come along and enlighten both of us.

Does your PC have software to play DVDs? What operating system does it have? If it's Windows, it probably has media player, but it may not recognize that it should launch for the DVD. I prefer vlc media player, which is a free download. It does a lot more than just DVD playing, but it does a good job with DVDs. Here is a link that might be useful: VLC home page

I found this at WorldStart which appeared in their Newsletter and it worked for me. I thought I would share it with others in case they have a similar problem. I quote: "Other Eject Options" I'm sure many of you have read our tips on how to eject a stuck CD from your computer, but even after going through all those steps, are you still having trouble getting that stubborn CD to come out? Sometimes those things can be so frustrating and after you mess with it for awhile, you probably just feel like throwing your whole computer out the window. Am I right? Well, before you go that far, give these alternative tricks a try. They may be just what you've been waiting for! First, try adding something to the CD. If you put an extra file or another song on it, that might be enough to coax it out. Also, when you're using a CD, make sure you eject it before you start up another program. If you leave the CD in its tray while you use other programs, it could cause some problems. Another thing to try is a simple reboot. Sometimes when you shut down your computer and then turn it back on, the CD will eject. Now, while all of those are good suggestions, they still might not work for you. So, if that's the case, you may want to try the other tips I mentioned in the first paragraph. One of them tells you to try the traditional method of right clicking on your CD drive and choosing Eject. I know that's the problem you're having, but if you try it more than once, it could finally open. You never know! The other tip we have tells you how to use a paperclip to get your CD out. You can read all about that here. Either way you go, I hope you're finally able to get your CD out so that you can enjoy your life in happy CD bliss once again!" end of quote.... IT WORKED FOR ME. Also, I bought a Laser Lens Cleaner for my CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM and DVD....and they are now cleaned.

It says it not only supports W/98, but W/95. If W/95 can handle it, my oldie ought to be able to. I hope... J

Try this: Create a folder on the H/D and name it as you wish. Mine is called Stand By. Place your CD in the drive, most likely d:/ and open Windows Explorer. In Windows Explorer click on the numeric serial number of the CD in its drive. The contents of the CD will appear in the large right window. In the small left window click on the + in front of the C:/ drive. This will open the system tree showing the folders of the drive. Locate the target picture in the large right window, and drag and drop it to the file you newly created. From there you can do anything you want with it, and the original will remain on the CD. DA

CD RW disks can be formatted
and then used just like a floppy disk.

The dye layer in RW type disks is unstable
making the disks unsuitable for long term storage.

For long term storage use good quality disks.

Thanks for the explanation Pooh. I never felt comfortable with rewrites but a friend says he uses them fo movies all the time with no problems. Of course movies are not quite the same as personal data.

As for quality, I agree. Buying unknown brands seems foolish when the savings are minimal

Thank you both for the excellent information and the crystal clear explanations. And thanks for the link about DVD quality. I am using Sony CDs.

I have a Dell 8300, running Windows XP2. I do have a DVD drive but don't know if I can put files on DVDs with it. I think it's read-only. Frankly, I am still using floppies a lot for everyday use and the CDs for back-up every few months.
