Removed IE7, now have no IE?

I was tired of the slow-running "error-producing upon close out" IE7 so I removed it, thinking it would take me back to some sort of IE6, which I believe is what my Sony came with.

It runs XP.

I look under add/remove & there is no IE. But I click on the IE icon & can get on the net, but when I close out there's an even worse error, which I didn't make note of.

I'm using Firefox in SafeMode, but I need to have IE in order to use McAfee's services free through Comcast.

I went to the IE website & saw two IE6 downloads. One is SP2 for XP & one is SP1 for OPs prior to XP. But I must have IE5 or later to use the site!

What in the heck do I do?
