Remove or Delete from Virus Vault Question

Hi,

Alright so I had a Trojan sitting in the vault of Avg and Superantispyware. When I clicked on "remove" I thought it would go in my recycle bin. It didn't. Where did it go? I noticed while I was in there, there was an old Trojan from 2007 Trojan horse Downloader Presario A and object names are A0000947.exe pathe C://System Volume Information/restore_(CD45504F-D983-486E... and msCMTsrvc.exe pathe C://Windows/system32/

Can these be removed from the vault as well, WITHOUT any ill harm to the performance of my computer? Thank you.

If I find anything in the virus vault I delete it. That removes it from the hard drive. If it was put into the recycle bin it could reinfect the computer. If they are in the vault they are isolated so I don't see how removing them could harm anything.

I think most files that are infected can be healed, as in having the virus removed from the file. If a file is infected and the embedded virus can't be removed, it is placed in the vault where it can't reinfect the computer.

Perhaps the only reason to keep a file in the vault is to wait for a possible future method of healing the file.

Try ad-aware. If it can't clean the virus because it's running, it will clean it on the next startup.

jane- I am a big fan of GoBack. Unfortunately it is not made for newer Operating systems like Vista, so I only have it on my older machines. Do not un-install it: if you do you are taking away the chance to fix this problem easily, and doing so will not create any old, regular System Restore points. GoBack works by creating its own set of restore points which actually include a complete image of your entire disc at different recent times. If you pick a point that is prior to the virus infection, it will be like going back in a time machine as it will simply restore the whole machine to the state it was on that date. One caution: it will undo anything you did in the period since the restore point, so if you have documents or photos created after the restore point, or new software installed, that will also disappear, but it should definitely solve your virus problem. If you have something important that is recent and on your hard disk, just transfer a copy to a flash drive and then invoke GoBack. It usually only allows you to go back several weeks, so if you have had the virus a long time, this won't work for you, but it saved me many times when I had a virus or a new software install that messed up my machine. My sympathies as I have also lost favorite roses to this horrible disease. This weekend I was at the District Conference for the ARS and there was much talk about RRD and other pests and diseases. The term we loved was 'be a tall shadow in your garden' meaning be a presence there to look over everything. We all get busy, lazy, sick, hurt and can't be out there all the time. But when we can we need to be aware of what it looks like normally so we know when something is not right. I was able to save one bush by noticing some weird growth at the tip of a cane, which I cut out. 3 years later, and so far no more signs of RRD on that bush. This fall I found some suspicious growth on another rose, so I cut out that cane. Time will tell. If Little Mischief looks ok, then you can plant next to it. I would think all of the mites are dead or dormant at this time of year. But watch Little Mischief very carefully when it comes out of dormancy in the spring. That is when RRD can show up.

I wish I could plant something else besides the Spirea but the landlord is very strict with a lot of "rules" and specifically prohibited planting anything in the ground (only in pots). The Spirea were already here when I moved in. They seem to attract flies and are not really the nicest-looking landscaping greenery. Something that flowers would be nice. I seem to have a black thumb though so if I grow something in a pot myself it would have to do well in shade and be low maintenance. I had got the evergreen shrub for my front door area, thinking that at least it would always be green, but I apparently can't even keep an evergreen green. There are brown areas even though I water it so heavily. I noticed the little trees grow like a weed without effort and always thought potted trees were cute. I had a small ficus once but it died indoors and I don't think they are the type that would not die in Winter in our climate (at the time we lived at an apartment that had few windows and no patio and got poor sun due to the windows placement).

Okay, so A0000947.exd and msCMTsrvc.exe that are the object names that the pathe to the Trojan go to are not needed? I am trying to clean up computer and then do a NEW RESTORE Point. Thanks.

You can remove those from the vault, it is great you are cleaning up the computer, but you do not need to do a System Restore that is only if you have a problem, what you need to do is clear all your restore points in case you have a bad one, this is done by turning System Restore off, now reboot the pc and turn System restore on, let us know that you have done this IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE GOOGLE "PURGE SYSTEM RESTORE"

Then I want to see if this file is running on the pc(CMTsrvc.exe) using msconfig under the services tab.

click start, now in the run box type msconfig, a window opens at the top click Services tab, look at all the services running you will see things like avg ect but please look for this one (CMTsrvc.exe) if it is running to the left put your mouse in the box and renove the check mark at some point you will be asked to restart, go ahead and do that, after you restart a window will poip up sayimg you have used the system configuration utility please place a check mark in the box where it says DO NOT SHOW THIS MESSAGE AGAIN.. Let us know when you completed these steps.

Hi,
Is shutting the system restore off the same as cleaning out all restore points? You said to reboot...does that mean shut down and turn on or just restart. I have MS XP and IE7. Thanks.

When you turn off system restore and reboot (or turn off and restart) the computer all the restore points which have been saved are deleted. You should then turn system restore back on and create a new restore point. Just restart, that's enough.

Okay, I shut off system restore and shut downa and restarted computer. I said yes to msg to turn on system restore, then clicked apply and ok. Now do I need to go and tick the spot for ""Create a new restore point?' If I do, will I have to rename it or something, or just turning it back on good enough for it to start a new restore point? The only way I can get more knowledgabel is to ask questions. Thanks.

Sapphires,

Just turning 'System Restore' back on should create a 'System Checkpoint' on your system drive.

To check, in Win XP, open 'System Restore' Start/All programs/Accessories/System Tools/ System restore, select 'Restore my computer to an earlier time' and click 'next'. The current date should be highlighted with a restore point. Click 'cancel' to exit.
