An E-Mail attachment? What E-Mail Program?

sorry. Yes, it's an email attachment and I'm using Microsoft Outlook.

We've all missed this at least once in the past so I have to ask, is the attachment a .doc file? If so, is this all attachments or just one?

Have you tried opening other .doc files recently? Perhaps it is empty? Just a thought to get it out of the way. Office07 creates .docx files

I sent the email I received to someone else and they were able to see something when they opened the attachment. This has happened more than once, so something has changed my ability to see the attachments I open.

Open word, create a document type anything in it. Then save it to the desk top. Close Microsoft word / office. Go to the desktop and try to open the doc you just created.

A .docx document will appear as hieroglyphics in a .doc only version of Office. Just happen to me yesterday when I found a quick need to work at an alternative work station.

I like Zep's suggestion of creating your own document and testing it. If that fails it could just be the association. Or, how about other documents you have already in your document folder?

I can try zep's suggestion if I still need to, but let me tell you what I did 1st and see if that gives you your answer. I 1st noticed the problem on an attachment that was sent to me by someone else. The 2nd time I noticed it was when I created a .doc and attached it to my own email to send to someone. I tried to open the attachment from the email just to make sure everything looked okay and nothing was there. I then sent it to a friend and asked them if they could see the attachment and they could.

okay, I just tested a few things. I attached a .doc that I created a while back and I was able to see it. I also attached an old and new excel spreadsheet and was able to see both of those, so it's only the new .doc files that I'm not able to see.

I'm not sure what a new .Doc is! A .Doc (Document File) Should open no matter how old. The only thing that would effect opening is the .Doc File extension.

Are these .doc files or are they .docx files? You may need to install the add on that lets you view the new format.

I thought Microsoft word 2007 would open either format. That's where I am also confused

Oops. You're right. I didn't notice that it was 2007.

Yes, it both opens and saves in either format. Sounds amazing that her installation will open files created before a certain date but not after that date.

I looked at the attachments and they are .docx files. The older ones I was able to open were .doc files. This is my work computer and I just started working from home three weeks ago, so I'm guessing the problem started then, but this is the 1st time I've dealt with any .docx files. So, what exactly is a .docx files as opposed to a .doc file?

In versions of word before 07 the native format for word was .doc. Starting with Word 07 they changed to .docx which they say is more secure. If you're trying to open a .docx file with a version of word before 07 you have to follow the instructions in this link.

bob - I have 07 and that's why I couldn't figure out why I was having a problem. I just went to "help" at the top of Microsoft Outlook and clicked on Office Diagnostics and told it to diagnose and fix any problems. It went through the process and said there weren't any problems to fix, but now it works. I hope it sticks. Any ideas why that happened though?
