Probably a corrupt file somewhere. For me the easiest solution is to download a fresh copy of AVG free then use the Add/Remove to uninstall AVG after switching it off. Use the new download to install and then go for the latest updates.

I got it straightened out! I went into the AVG Update Manager Properties and found that it was set to complete the updates when the computer was restarted. I changed it to Update Immediately, and it worked perfectly yesterday and today. I have no idea how it ended up with the restart selection, but as long as it works now without having to reboot each time, I'm happy. Thanks to everyone who replied. I appreciate it. Dee
