AVG problem

Yesterday, when AVG tried to update, the icon in the Taskbar went gray and a message appeared saying that Update Manager was in an error state, and I would have to restart the computer to finish the update. I checked the AVG Control Center, and it had the Update Manager in red and the status box in the top right coner was also red.

I rebooted and when the icon loaded, it was colored again, and the Control Center was back to normal with a green status box.

I thought it was all just a temporary glitch, but today the same thing happened again with the same result. If there was some kind of permanent corruption in the Update Manager, it wouldn't correct itself with a reboot, would it? Does anyone know what's going on? I can't keep rebooting every day.

In case anyone suggests I download AVG again and re-install it, IÂm on dial up, and AVG is just too big to download again. I tried. It cuts off long before the dl is finished. Is there another solution?

It's probably a temporary glitch at the AVG updater site.
Yesterday one person reported that his said Internal Virus Database is out of date and when he tried to update it says that avg already has the latest update.

Thanks, Randy. I certainly hope you're right. I'll give it some time to get straightened out.

Thanks very much for all the help. I finally called AVG and , of course wound up paying them to uninstall and reinstall the "free" AVG. The problem, they say, is that I have too many security systems going and that disrupts the installation. I had to remove Winpatrol (scotty) , and Spybot. They did a gemeral cleanup and gave me some probably good advice .....about updates and Internet Explorer, etc. Then they did a scan with Malewarebytes , which I had done yesterday....I won't tell you what this cost, but I'm just glad it's done ! You dont have a friend not too terribly far away with a high speed connection... if you could visit somewhere with high speed connection and take along one of the usb flash drives - you could have it in a few mmoments. Probably during that long download something glitched and its unlikely you can repair it but you might try running checkdisk and defrag too. Slim chance it will fix it though.

I had the same message, but reopened the AVG program and ran update again (10:28am EDT) and everything ran smoothly. If it was an AVG problem I think they fixed it.

It is my experience that AVG does a very short scan on startup, exactly as it should. Then by default it is set to do a full scan at 8 a.m. The full scan time can be adjusted to suit the user, mine was always set to 3 a.m. because I knew I would not be at the computer at that hour. I am unsure about why anyone would want to defeat the purpose of the program to save a mere 10 to 15 seconds on a reasonably fast machine. Just a few days ago I installed AVG on a PII with 64 megs of RAM and Win98 for a lady and it only took 20 seconds for the initial scan every time I started the computer.

If you continue having problems a reinstall of AVG would probably be in order.
If you have any friends with broadband internet service see if one of them would be nice enough to download the file for you and copy it to CD. You can either reinstall directly from the CD or copy the contents to a file in 'My Documents' folder.

I have had 2 priority updates with AVG in 3 days so it may be just a coincidence. My icon goes dark too when it has been too long since I have updated it and I get prompted occasionally to restart after an update. I have version 7.5.484 on Windows XP Home.

Dee,

As a reminder from one antique DUN user to another, after down "llloooaaaddding" a large setup file, it is really beneficial to us to copy it to a CD in case there is a future need. I have an amendable one that I use solely for that purpose.

I got it straightened out!

I went into the AVG Update Manager Properties and found that it was set to complete the updates when the computer was restarted. I changed it to Update Immediately, and it worked perfectly yesterday and today. I have no idea how it ended up with the restart selection, but as long as it works now without having to reboot each time, I'm happy.
