tracking searches, etc

Anybody following the Wall Street Journal's series on tracking internet users, etc.? That's scary stuff. Do we really want companies trading (buying/selling) individual (so-called "anonymous") profiles of us to do with as they wish? (Not me!) Do we want them targeting ads based on these individual profiles? (Not me!) Do we want them to continue recording and compiling our searches from our IP addresses? This is crazy. For instance, I read that pressing a "like" button (such as on Facebook) just adds value to one's profile.

The latest versions of browsers supposedly allow one to browse "privately", yet those sessions still allow internet providers to collect, aggregate, and sell search data profiles tied to one's address. This has to stop. If I am searching for, say, chronic hemorrhoid relief, that shouldn't be tied to my IP address, bundled, and sold. Whatever happened to privacy?!

Anybody know how to avoid this data aggregating online? Thanks.
