If you are indeed 32-bit: Open the AVG interface. On the Toolbar select Tools>Advanced Settings. In the appearing window on the left side click on the plus in front of Update. Click on Manage. On the appearing right panel select the lower bar Revert Virus Database to Previous Version. If all goes well and the problem was only a corrupt dat file this could resolve your concern. However, if the concern is a by-product of the recent version upgrade you will have to remove AVG entirely and re-install. Be sure to use the removal tool. If you had no problems until recently I wouldn't go back to v9. The prior version before the recent upgrade, 10.0.1191, should be just fine. Da Here is a link that might be useful: AVG 10.0.1191

Thanks very much for all the help. I finally called AVG and , of course wound up paying them to uninstall and reinstall the "free" AVG. The problem, they say, is that I have too many security systems going and that disrupts the installation. I had to remove Winpatrol (scotty) , and Spybot. They did a gemeral cleanup and gave me some probably good advice .....about updates and Internet Explorer, etc. Then they did a scan with Malewarebytes , which I had done yesterday....I won't tell you what this cost, but I'm just glad it's done ! You people are the best ! salbwil

If all else fails, may I suggest that you use the Windows Disk Cleanup or better yet CCleaner. Then try again. I am thinking you may have had a corrupt download and it is being stored in a temp file thus impeding your successful update download. Also, have you tried updating in Safe Mode? DA

Think if I were having problems with AVG Free I would do a quick search for AVG uninstall tool - And uninstall it after Downloading the Avast free version. Or you could try the new Panda Cloud Antivirus - new thing. I've used it for a couple days and its without a doubt lots less load on my vista system. But very very painfully slow to run a full scan - supposedly it scans full everything slowly & unnoticeable in the background.
