AVG updates

Hi to all. I've never posted here before but am hoping someone can help me. I recently downloaded the free AVG, but have been unable to get the daily automatic updates. When I try to update myself, I get the message "access is forbidden by server". Today, I thought perhaps, I should try downloading the program again and I did, but the same problem continues. I have visited the AVG forum and followed one suggestion of checking to be sure that "Local Access" was checked in ANONYMOUSLOGON. It was. I'm starting to wonder if perhaps I might have a worm or something as sometimes when I am trying to access a site from a google search, I get the message "avgnsx.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". At this point I usually have to reboot to gain access to the Internet again.

Perhaps I should take it in to the shop, but I really need my computer this week and am trying to avoid that. However I'm not terribly "techno-savie" so that may be my best bet. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Think if I were having problems with AVG Free I would do a quick search for AVG uninstall tool - And uninstall it after Downloading the Avast free version.

Or you could try the new Panda Cloud Antivirus - new thing. I've used it for a couple days and its without a doubt lots less load on my vista system. But very very painfully slow to run a full scan - supposedly it scans full everything slowly & unnoticeable in the background.

If all else fails, may I suggest that you use the Windows Disk Cleanup or better yet CCleaner. Then try again. I am thinking you may have had a corrupt download and it is being stored in a temp file thus impeding your successful update download. Also, have you tried updating in Safe Mode? DA

For those who aren't thrilled with Link Scanner or those who may just want to see how well AVG operates without it, it is not necessary to delete and reinstall. Double click on the icon appearing in the Notification Area/System Tray>In the appearing interface double click on the Link Scanner component>Uncheck the Enable the AVG Search-Shield (need web browser restart)>Click Save changes. I do not remember if a restart is required. I am sure AVG will advise if necessary. DA

Probably a corrupt file somewhere. For me the easiest solution is to download a fresh copy of AVG free then use the Add/Remove to uninstall AVG after switching it off. Use the new download to install and then go for the latest updates.

Dar when I encounter a problem like that I find it simpler to download the program, remove the existing program and install from scratch. Why fight with the issues if there is no need. The link below is to the download site. We would have no idea where AVG might have been directing you. After downloading I would remove the internet cable so you are not vulnerable during the removal and re-install. Then connect after a restart and grab the latest updates. Since the latest version of AVG became too resource hungry and more of a security package I have moved to Kaspersky Anti Virus 2009, it is a leading anti-virus software and Internet Security software solution for your home computer or business.
AVG gives perfectly good protection, but the latest version was just too resource heavy for an aging laptop.
