AVG update manager ???

I have Win XP and AVG 9.0.?? - the free version. Would it cause problems with AVG if I disabled the update manager? I prefer to check in here before I let it update to see if anyone's having problems as a result of faulty updates.

I just got the new version so I'm not positive, but it looks like the update starts the moment I turn on the PC, no matter what time the update manager is set for. If I deselect the automatic, I get red warnings that that function is disabled.

I can live with the warning, I just want to be sure it's not harming anything.

Go ahead and turn it off if you so wish. The warnings on the interface are just alerts. The AVG icon on the System Tray/Notification Area will also show an alert on it.

To remedy that alert open the application interface>Right click on the Update Manager>On the appearing menu click on the offering to ignore.

Being on an antediluvian DUN I never have anything set to check automatically.

Hi, DA! Thank you for the tip. I'm so glad someone as knowlegable as you doesn't scoff at me for not wanting everything done automatically. I even resent having my car headlights turn themselves on and off!

You didn't say what version you currently have, but they are very close to being all the same. Open the AVG interface. Locate Options and click on it. Click on Advance Settings. In the appearing left pane click on the + for Schedules. The access for Program Updates and Definition Updates will appear on the tree and are independent. Select your target. The appearing window will allow you to select the time for your update or allow you to opt out of the automatic privilege. Since my system is on all the time the Program Updates are configured for 1:00 a.m. and the Definitions are configured for 5:00 a.m. DA

I am unfortunately seeing still a lot of negative reports on AVG8 on the other forums, in fact I am going to be changing one of my windows pcs from McAfee to something else, and with all the complaints still I am going to go with Avast for now. I think they will eventually get all the kinks worked out of version 8, they need to because a lot of people have jumped ship over the recent problems. If I was going with AVG8 I would definitely follow the install instructions from their FAQ and NOT add on the extras.

I got it straightened out! I went into the AVG Update Manager Properties and found that it was set to complete the updates when the computer was restarted. I changed it to Update Immediately, and it worked perfectly yesterday and today. I have no idea how it ended up with the restart selection, but as long as it works now without having to reboot each time, I'm happy. Thanks to everyone who replied. I appreciate it. Dee

OP never said what version of AVG. Using AVG 7.5, XP-2. I had update problems for quite a while recently. Not sure if it was part of the update problems they refer to now, but I finally found a link to DL 7.5 again. Part of the install was removal of the old installation. It was easy and is working perfectly now, just as I'd become accustomed to. Can post link if you're looking for 7.5. Support may end 12/31/08 but I'm willing to stick with it as long as its supported. Love programs that do what they promise without slowing things down or constant nagging. Sandy

I'm not certain about me being knowledgeable though. I just know what I know, and have experienced what I have experienced. No plagiarizing content from other web pages and presenting it as if it is my own thought. I might make an educated guess once in a while though.
