a daughters story

Hi all!

I suppose I just want to vent for awhile.

I think I have reached my wits end with my mother and my family.

Its really really hard to deal with my mothers physical needs let alone her emotional/mentals issues.

Let me explain.

My mother is 72. Just 2 years ago she suffered a minor heart attack. By minor I mean she was up and talking all the while-walked into the ER under her own power. Now not to discount that I am sure she was in pain but the docs spoke like it was really no big deal.

So they do a double bypass and tell us that everything went well and mom would be up and walking in a day or 2 and released in under a week.

I knew that because just 2 months earlier my FIL underwent a quadruple bypass at the same hospital and he was well on his way to getting back to life.

Well as many of you know she did not recover-refused to get up, eat, take meds ect...after 3 weeks the hospital staff said there was nothing more they could do and sent her to a nursing home were she spent 6 weeks refusing all help and finally was released because of her failure to particpate in recovery and sent her home where it was up to me to care for her.

Fast forward to the present and my mom is still not right.

By that I mean he is fully healed and is doing great according to her docs but she still refuses to do ANYTHING to improve her quality of life.

Mom was a fiesty woman full of life. Never learned to drive but found a way to get around by walking or biking, now she cannot take 10 steps before getting winded.

Her docs say she should have occupational therapy. She flat out refuses-she is stubborn.

I have tried like the dickens to get her to join some sort of seniors group-she refuses claiming she doesn't like socializing with "those" people.

She does go to a quizzo night about once every 2 months...a group of her former co workers take her to a smoky bar to play-she is a mess for about a week afterwards but she calls that all the socializing she needs.

She pretty much sits in her huge empty house all day, watches the BBC and does crosswords. Thats is it.

I go to her house every Friday-my only day off mind you. I take her shopping for her groceries, to the bank, drug store ect...then I generally take her home where she will take a bath(she doesn't like to take a bath when there is no one in the house-she is afraid she may fall ect...) and I run the vaccume, do some wash tidy up ect...

Our shopping trips have become battles. She flat out refuses to try anything new. Ok I get it she is 72 years old leave her be. But even simple things like getting her to try the reduced sodium versions...OMG...she has a fit and starts tearing into me!! Calling me every name in the book!!

I also pop in at least one other time during the week. Lately even that has ended in an arguement.

When its time for a doctor appointment she only calls on me to take her, forcing me to take off work.

I asked her to make her appt on Friday and she refuses.

I asked her to call on some of my brothers or their spouses and she refuses saying I am the daughter and its my obligation.

I am just really frustrated!!

Here is an example...she only drinks pepsi-no kidding only pepsi and it HAS to be cans because she refuses to wash any dishes so if she were to buy and 2lt bottle she would have to "dirty a glass". So she will avoid the sale on bottles and spend about $5 for a 12 pack cans...then complain about the price!!

Over the summer she was getting leg cramps so I suggested she drink some water...well of course she balked and it turned into a fight. Doesn't she end up in the hospital due to severe dehydration!!!

It gets better...she was supposed to stay one more day to get her levels correct but no way...she signed herself out AMA and got one of my MIA siblings to take her home.

In the meantime some stupid resident doc told her she should drink all the pepsi she wants!!

HELLO!!!!

Oh and if a day goes by and I don't call look out!!

I tell her the phone works both ways but she refuses to call anyone claiming she doesn't know anyone schedule yadda yadda yadda. So I said to her "Mom, I would love to come home from a long day at work and see a messege from you saying hi, I was just thinking of you and want to call and say so" She just laughed and told me to grow up!!

Yup she is that arrogant!!

Oh how she loves to see my kids!! So over the summer we would all visit on Fridays...she would tuck money into their pockets every time!! And not just a few bucks I am talking like $40-$50 bucks!! Amy took her out to lunch and not only did mom pay but she gave Amy $100 for gas!!

One time after Drew got into the car he took out the cash and wanted to give it to me for all my trouble-sweet kid!

I told him to keep it-she wanted him to have it.

I know I am lucky to still have my mom and all but sometimes I just want to escape!

I would love to have the courage to just cut her off but I know my sibs would leave her rot.

I also know that she needs some mental help but suggesting that would end up an arguement.

Oldest brother is her POA but all he does for her is handle her money (poorly I might add) so without the POA I have no rights to discuss this with her docs without her there.

Her primary told me to get a joint POA but she refuses to add me.

I am sad cuz I miss the mom she used to be before her heart attack. I so long to do mother daughter things with her but its just too much trouble...I mean how am I supposed to take her out to the beach or to a movie when she can't walk and refuses a wheelchair-yes she is that difficult.

At the gym I go to there are mena dn women her age all who have gone thru similar or worse situations and they say she needs to get out on her own and get involved with other seniors and depend less on her kids...I did try to take her to the senior center but she refused to get out of the car and simply go in to see what they offered.

One lady told me in her opinion its a great time to be a senior-so much to do and tells me mom needs to see how much is really out there for her.

I guess I am just very tired of all this.

Docs say she is fine and has potential to live 10-15 more years...I don't think I could survive!! LOL!!

Thanks for allowing me to vent...I do love her so very much and would miss her terribly if she wasn't here but I am wearing out!

Cheers!

Susie
