First of all, we need more information. What operating system are you using---XP, Vista? What security software are you using---antivirus, antispyware, firewall, etc.? Is it possible that the person who broke in also logged on to your computer and installed some sort of malware? Exactly what happens when you first boot up? Can you access any of your installed programs; can you surf the web; can you access your e-mail? Please answer and help will be forthcoming.

I am going to assume you mean your pc is working but when you try to do a system restore to an earlier time it fails to do so is this the situation?

If so you need to run malwarebytes because there has been some infections lately that do disable system restore.
Install malwarebytes free update it and run full scan
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

1) Is your computer working ok, other than having problems with the printer install? If so, why do you want to do a system restore? Do you know what that means and that it is different from re-installing your operating system, and different from doing a restore point? More info on your objectives would help.
2) Printers are usually easy to install. However, since this is a new printer, why don't you call tech support for the printer and have them walk you through it?

Sorry I didn't mention what I have running. I have WindowsXP. I have Norton Internet Security. I ran Malwarebytes (a full scan). Anyway, I thought if I did a system restore I could install my printer. This is the second new printer I have tried to install. It just continually loops and doesn't install. Now to printers it is extremely important for to follow the exact steps as the directions tell you, most tell you exactly at what stage to plug the printer to the pc have you been following these directions to the letter? If not definitely do it as they direct. You do have the software cd that is for that particular printer to do the install?

And the printer's name is ___________. Many moons ago when XP was still in its infancy, some printers would not install correctly. Mine was one and had to use a driver that was not furnished or recommended by the manufacturer. Suggest checking the printer manufacturer website to see the latest device driver and compare with the one you have available. kudzu9's advice is really good - contact the manufacturer by phone to get help. They should be able to answer your questions, steer you through the process, and get you a new software driver if necessary. Since your printer CD is "looping" that may be the problem and would require a new CD. If the CD is okay and looping, it could be an XP system file that is corrupt. The printer manufacturer should be able to determine the problem.
