Avast or Avg?

Hi,

IE 7 MS Xp

I currently have Avg Free Ed. Ver. 7.5.524 which. Now that it is expired or good til Dec., I want to get a newer version. What version should I be looking for and/or is Avast easier and better to use. Opinions and links to the free versions of both welcomed. Any help and heads up on how to configure the downloads would be helpful. Thanks alot.

I swapped to Avast not long after AVG 8 came out. It was not new to me, I have used Avast before. Both do the job required. Avast requires registration within 14 days (very simple) and renewal after 14 months, again an easy task. My wife's computer still has AVG8 on it.

Both do a satisfactory job, neither is hard to use.

I would say stay exactly where you are till your AVG version expires which is set for the end of Dec but they may extend it due to the issues that they are having with AVG8.

Hey, You you paid for this, then it will give full access, I don't know what happen to this, I face this problem, when I purchased 'Adware Alert' anti-spyware from www.adwarealert.com and I also paid it for full access, but they were rogue, and i just wasting my time and money.. well, you also contact their website for the detail. Does anybody have a clue what might be causing this? Sounds like the backlight is bad, it's a little lamp that's located in the lower backside of the screen that lights up the screen. Search google for lcd backlight to learn more. There is another component that could be a problem, but the name escapes me now. Good thing you don't have dead pixel lines, that would mean a screen replacement, very expensive. Good thing you have the extended warranty.

It is extremely unfortunate that we have lost one of the best long time security help forums on the net, CastleCops. Much good information is now lost. I was a member there for many many years and am sad to see it gone. Other good forums with many of those members are now available which is good news. Paul and Robin did an excellent job with CastleCops, I wish them well and will miss that place. Another very good "list" site I often recommend is Gizmo's site. Hi Sherry, and Sue. Sherry, I was hoping Mr Fixit was really going to fix it. I've never used Avast, always AVG and now AVG8. I did a search at CH for info on Avast/AVG. Give up Scrabble for a while and scan through all the comments there! What does this mean:yahoo is the worst still, some sites are a little quicker. I've been wondering the same thing and have been pleasantly surprised that AVG 7.5.524 is still updating regularly. I didn't realize that it was set to go to end of Dec and maybe beyond. Thanks, Raven... I'll just stay where I am for now.

I'm on XP.

Everything was working smoothly and rapidly for me until some things I regrettably did a couple weeks ago, namely upgrading to Firefox 5.0 (from 4.x), and upgrading to AVG 8 (from 7.5 or whatever it was). Now too much of their bloated apps are running in the background and hogging resources like you wouldn't believe.

So then I dropped AVG 8 and went with free Avast. Things are not much better. I'm probably going to go back to the previous version of Firefox next.

I should never have touched any of it. It was perfect. Nuts!

firefox 5???? where on earth did you get a firefox 5?? firefox 3 is the latest version available from the mozilla website.

there is a method to install AVG 8 with out all the extras they added on, anyone getting it should consider using that method, it is outlined in their faq page.
FAQ

keeping AVG 7.5 till Dec. or later will allow them to hopefully get a lot of those kinks out of AVG 8 too.

AVG7.5.52 on a Win 98 system in the garage. An old reliable O/S and AV combination. Unfortunately the AVG version will apparently be expiring.

AVG 8.0.138 on a Vista system (On vacation so I think that's what it is. Regardless the most current version.) Other than the useless Link Scanner which I have disabled, everything has been working well.

Avast on a Win2000 laptop. Works fine except the updating is slower. I really see no difference between it and AVG except for the presentation.

I guess when you compare the two it is like whether you drive a Ford or a Chevrolet.

If your system and your current AV are working properly I would just stand by until the end of the year nears. A lot can happen to both products, both positive and negative, in 5 1/2 months.
