Avast or Avg?

Hi,

IE 7 MS Xp

I currently have Avg Free Ed. Ver. 7.5.524 which. Now that it is expired or good til Dec., I want to get a newer version. What version should I be looking for and/or is Avast easier and better to use. Opinions and links to the free versions of both welcomed. Any help and heads up on how to configure the downloads would be helpful. Thanks alot.

I swapped to Avast not long after AVG 8 came out. It was not new to me, I have used Avast before. Both do the job required. Avast requires registration within 14 days (very simple) and renewal after 14 months, again an easy task. My wife's computer still has AVG8 on it.

Both do a satisfactory job, neither is hard to use.

I would say stay exactly where you are till your AVG version expires which is set for the end of Dec but they may extend it due to the issues that they are having with AVG8.

Jann- I am a dial up user, and I have all my updates current. Nothing has affected my connection speed. My connection speed is 46.6 - pretty consistant. I occasionally get a really low connection rate. I disconnect and redial and it will pick up a better rate. If you connection speed is much lower than it has been - it may be a problem with your phone line. Have you installed any new jacks or phones in your house? I have had trouble when the phone company worked on the line that I am on. It wasn't even close to my house. I contacted the actaul service person that worked on it (thank goodness for country living - you know everyone!) and he fixed the issue) I have also noticed many sites that used to load good, are really slow now. The have many more graphics and videos. That just kills my chances of getting on that site. Even eBay is a terrible load anymore. You can call the phone company and have them do a "line test" to start with and see if there is any issue there.

Does anybody have a clue what might be causing this? Sounds like the backlight is bad, it's a little lamp that's located in the lower backside of the screen that lights up the screen. Search google for lcd backlight to learn more. There is another component that could be a problem, but the name escapes me now. Good thing you don't have dead pixel lines, that would mean a screen replacement, very expensive. Good thing you have the extended warranty.

I've seen a couple off computers with an A named anti virus telling you windows updates is out of date. One was XP and its painful the wording and persistence of the message, and wastes time to discover how to disable that message. Avast and AVG are both excellent free programs. However AVG now offer 3 different freebies, which are you running? They offer the anti virus program that has been around for years. Now they also offer an anti spyware program, it's icon has the letter S in the middle. Then they offer the anti Rootkit program When I use an anti virus program I always leave it at the default settings except for adjusting the scan time to 3 a.m. rather than 8 a.m. and never have any problems. Have you altered the settings at all? If you are only running Avast for protection you should seriously consider getting more for anti spyware and malware. Unlike an anti virus where you should only run one at a time you should consider at least 2 of these programs. Here are a few free ones, there are others probably equally as good. Spywareblaster Spybot Search and Destroy SUPERAntispyware BOClean AVG anti spyware I would suggest staying away from AdAware2007 as it seems overbloated compared to the old AdAwareSE which will cease to get updates effective January 1st as I understand it. You might consider a couple of free online scans to see what uninvited guests are running on your computer. There are many, here are a few. Bitdefender Housecall aka Trend Micro Symantec Panda eTrust Ewido Fsecure I belive they all remove things with a fee, the first 2 definitely do.

I've been wondering the same thing and have been pleasantly surprised that AVG 7.5.524 is still updating regularly. I didn't realize that it was set to go to end of Dec and maybe beyond. Thanks, Raven... I'll just stay where I am for now.

I'm on XP.

Everything was working smoothly and rapidly for me until some things I regrettably did a couple weeks ago, namely upgrading to Firefox 5.0 (from 4.x), and upgrading to AVG 8 (from 7.5 or whatever it was). Now too much of their bloated apps are running in the background and hogging resources like you wouldn't believe.

So then I dropped AVG 8 and went with free Avast. Things are not much better. I'm probably going to go back to the previous version of Firefox next.

I should never have touched any of it. It was perfect. Nuts!

firefox 5???? where on earth did you get a firefox 5?? firefox 3 is the latest version available from the mozilla website.

there is a method to install AVG 8 with out all the extras they added on, anyone getting it should consider using that method, it is outlined in their faq page.
FAQ

keeping AVG 7.5 till Dec. or later will allow them to hopefully get a lot of those kinks out of AVG 8 too.

AVG7.5.52 on a Win 98 system in the garage. An old reliable O/S and AV combination. Unfortunately the AVG version will apparently be expiring.

AVG 8.0.138 on a Vista system (On vacation so I think that's what it is. Regardless the most current version.) Other than the useless Link Scanner which I have disabled, everything has been working well.

Avast on a Win2000 laptop. Works fine except the updating is slower. I really see no difference between it and AVG except for the presentation.

I guess when you compare the two it is like whether you drive a Ford or a Chevrolet.

If your system and your current AV are working properly I would just stand by until the end of the year nears. A lot can happen to both products, both positive and negative, in 5 1/2 months.
